Dear Ray,

This entire section of Genesis [37:17-36], concerning the circumstances surrounding Joseph being sold to the Egyptians, has challenged Bible readers for a long time. It seems to contain two separate traditions:

In one tradition, Joseph's brothers conspired against him, and Reuben says, "Shed no blood; cast him into this pit." Reuben then intends to later rescue Joseph, however Midianite merchants passed by, and drew him out of the pit, before Reuben could come back. The Midianites subsequently sold him to the Egyptians [verse 36].

In a separate tradition, Joseph's brothers conspired against him, saying, "Let us slay him, and cast him into one of the pits." Then Judah comes up with the idea to sell him to the Ishmaelites instead. In which case, the Ishmaelites -- not the Midianites -- would have brought Joseph into Egypt [verse 28].

Wondering what this verse is really saying. I have allways beeen taught that Joseph literally was sold by his brothers, but recently been told by a church member that that has been taught in churches, but was wrong and that this verse is stateing that they (his brotheres) were planning to sell him, but the Midianite merchantmen men came by drew Joseph out of the pit and sold him to the Ishmelites not his brothers. Was Joseph stolen by the Midianites?
