Nineveh Repents

1 Now the word° of the LORD° came° to Jonah° the second° time°, saying°, 2 “Arise°, go° to aNineveh° the great° city° and bproclaim° to it the proclamation° which° I am going to tell° you.” 3 So Jonah° arose° and went° to Nineveh° according to the word° of the LORD°. Now Nineveh° was Ian aexceedingly° great° city°, a three° days’° walk°. 4 Then Jonah° began° to go° through the city° one° day’s° walk°; and he acried° out and said°, “Yet° forty° days° and Nineveh° will be overthrown°.”

5 ¶ Then the people° of Nineveh° believed° in God°; and they called° a afast° and put° on sackcloth° from the greatest° to the least° of them. 6 When the word° reached° the king° of Nineveh°, he arose° from his throne°, laid° aside° his robe° from him, acovered° [himself] with sackcloth° and sat° on the Iashes°. 7 He issued° a aproclamation° and it said°, “In Nineveh° by the decree° of the king° and his nobles°: Do not let man°, beast°, herd°, or flock° taste° a thing°. Do not let them eat° or drink° water°. 8 But both man° and beast° must be covered° with sackcloth°; and let Imen acall° on God° earnestly° that each° may bturn° from his wicked° way° and from the violence° which° is in IIhis hands°. 9 aWho° knows°, God° may turn° and relent° and withdraw° His burning° anger° so that we will not perish°.”

Jonah, sent again, preacheth to the Ninevites.

1 ¶ And the wordº of the LORDº came² unto² Jonahº the second¹ time,² saying,ºª 2 Arise,ºª go¹ª² unto² Nineveh,º that greatº city,º and preachºª unto² it² the preachingº that² I² bidºª² thee. 3 So Jonahº arose,ºª and went¹ª² unto² Nineveh,º according to the wordº of the LORD.º Now Ninevehº was² an exceedingº greatº cityº of threeº days'º journey.º 4 And Jonahº beganºª to enterºª into the cityº aº day'sº journey,º and he cried,ºª and said,ºª Yet² fortyº days,º and Ninevehº shall be overthrown.ºª

Upon their repentance,

5 ¶ So the people¹² of Ninevehº believedºª God,º and proclaimedºª a fast,º and put¹ª on² sackcloth,º from the greatestº² of them even to² the leastº of them. 6 For wordº cameºª unto² the kingº of Nineveh,º and he aroseºª from his throne,º² and he laidºª his robeº from²² him, and coveredºª [him] with sackcloth,º and satºª in² ashes.º 7 And he caused [it] to be proclaimedºª and publishedºª through Ninevehº by the decreeº² of the kingº and his nobles,º saying,ºª Let neither² manº nor beast,º herdº nor flock,º tasteºª any thing:º let them not² feed,ºª nor² drinkºª water:º 8 But let manº and beastº be coveredºª with sackcloth,º and cryºª mightilyº unto² God:º yea, let them turnºª every oneº from his evilº way,º² and from² the violenceº that² [is] in their hands.º 9 Who² can tellºª [if] Godº will turnºª and repent,ºª and turn awayºª from his fierceº² anger,º that we perishºª not?²
