The Triumphs of Faith

1 Now° faith° is the Iaassurance° of [things] IIbhoped° for, the IIIconviction° of cthings° not seen°. 2 For by it the amen° of old° Ibgained° approval°.

3 ¶ By faith° we understand° that the Iaworlds° were prepared° bby the word° of God°, so° that what is seen° cwas not made° out of things which are visible°. 4 By faith° aAbel° offered° to God° a better° sacrifice° than° Cain°, through° which° he bobtained° the testimony° that he was righteous°, God° testifying° Iabout° his cgifts°, and through° IIfaith, though dhe is dead°, he still° speaks°. 5 By faith° aEnoch° was taken° up so that he would not bsee° death°; AND HE WAS NOT FOUND° BECAUSE° GOD° TOOK° HIM UP; for he obtained° the witness° that before° his being° taken° up he was pleasing° to God°. 6 And without° faith° it is impossible° to please° [Him], for he who acomes° to God° must° believe° that He is and [that] He is a rewarder° of those° who seek° Him. 7 By faith° aNoah°, being bwarned° [by God] about° cthings not yet° seen°, Idin reverence° eprepared° an ark° for the salvation° of his household°, by which° he condemned° the world°, and became° an heir° of fthe righteousness° which is according° to faith°.

What faith is.

1 ¶ Nowº faithº isºª the substanceº of things hoped for,ºª the evidenceº of thingsº notº seen.ºª 2 Forº byº itº the² eldersº obtained a good report.ºª 3 Through faithº we understandºª that the² worldsº were framedºª by the wordº of God,º so¹ that things which¹ are seenºª were¹ª notº madeºª ofº things which do appear.ºª 4 By faithº Abelº offeredºª unto Godº a more excellentº sacrificeº thanº Cain,º byº whichº he obtained witnessºª that he wasºª righteous,º Godº testifyingºª ofº hisº gifts:º andº byº itº he being deadºª yetº speaketh.ºªªª 5 By faithº Enochº was translatedºª that he should¹ª notº seeºª death;º andº was¹ª notº found,ºª becauseº Godº had translatedºª him:º forº beforeº hisº translation¹² he had this testimony,ºª that he pleasedºª God.º

The worthy fruits thereof in the fathers of old time.

7 By faithº Noah,º being warned of Godºª ofº things not¹ª seen¹ª as yet,º² moved with fear,ºª preparedºª an arkº to¹ the savingº² of his¹² house;º byº the whichº he condemnedºª the² world,º andº he went out,ºª notº knowingºª whitherº he went.ºª 9 By faithº he sojournedºª inº the² landº of promise,º as¹ [in]² a strange country,º dwellingºª inº tabernaclesº withº Isaacº and¹² Jacob,º the² heirs with himº of the² sameº promise:º 10 Forº he looked forºª a cityº which hathºª foundations,º whoseº builderº andº makerº [is] God.º 11 Through faithº alsoº Saraº herselfº receivedºª strengthº toº conceiveº seed,º andº was delivered of a childºª when she was past¹ age,ºº² becauseº she judgedºª him faithfulº who had promised.ºª 12 Thereforeº sprang² there¹ª evenº ofº one,º andº himº as good as butº having seenºª themº afar off,º andº were persuaded² of¹ª [them], andº embracedºª [them], andº confessedºª thatº they wereºª strangersº andº pilgrimsº onº the² earth.º 14 Forº they that sayºª such faithº Abraham,º when he was tried,ºª offered upºª Isaac:º andº he that had receivedºª the² promisesº offered upºª his only begottenº [son], 18 Ofº whomº it was said,ºª Thatº inº Isaacº shall¹ª thyº reproachº of Christº greaterº richesº than¹ª the² treasuresº inº Egypt:º forº he had respectºª untoº the² recompence of the reward.º 27 By faithº he forsookºª Egypt,º notº fearingºª the² wrathº of the² king:º forº he endured,ºª asº seeingºª him who is invisible.º 28 Through faithº he keptºª the² passover,º andº the² sprinklingº of blood,º lestº he that destroyedºª the² firstbornº should touchºª faithº subduedºª kingdoms,º wroughtºª righteousness,º obtainedºª promises,º stoppedºª the mouthsº of lions,º 34 Quenchedºª the violenceº of fire,º escapedºª the edgeº of the sword,º out ofº weaknessº
