A Satire on Idolatry

1 Hear° the word° which° the LORD° speaks° to you, O house° of Israel°. 2 Thus° says° the LORD°,
  “aDo not learn° the way° of the nations°,
  And do not be terrified° by the signs° of the heavens°
  Although° the nations° are terrified° by them;
  3 For the customs° of the peoples° are Iadelusion°;
  Because° bit is wood° cut° from the forest°,
  The work° of the hands° of a craftsman° with a cutting° tool°.
  4 “They adecorate° [it] with silver° and with gold°;
  They bfasten° it with nails° and with hammers°
  So that it will not totter°.
  5 “Like a scarecrow° in a cucumber° field° are they,
  And they acannot° speak°;
  They must° be bcarried°,
  Because° they cannot° walk°!
  Do not fear° them,
  For they ccan do° no° harm°,
  Nor°° can they do° any° good°.”

The unequal comparison of God and idols.

1 ¶ Hearºª ye² the wordº which² the LORDº speakethºª unto² you, O houseº of Israel:º 2 Thus² saithºª the LORD,º Learnºª not² the wayº of the heathen,º and be not² dismayedºª at the signsº² of heaven;º for² the heathenº are dismayedºª at them.º² 3 For² the customsº of the peopleº [are] vain:º for² [one] cuttethºª a treeº out of the forest,º² the workº of the handsº of the workman,º with the axe.º 4 They deckºª it with silverº and with gold;º they fastenºª it with nailsº and with hammers,º that it moveºª not.² 5 They² [are] uprightº as the palm tree,º but speakºª not:² they must needs¹ª be borne,ºª because² they cannot² go.ºª Be not² afraidºª of² them; for² they cannot² do evil,ºª neither² also² [is it] in² them to do good.ºª 6 Forasmuch as [there is] none²² like unto thee,² O LORD;º thou² [art] great,º and thy nameº [is] greatº in might.º 7 Who² would not² fearºª thee, O Kingº of nations?º for² to thee doth it appertain:ºª forasmuch² as among all² the wiseº [men] of the nations,º and in all² their kingdoms,º [there is] none²² like unto thee.² 8 But they are altogetherº brutishºª and foolish:ºª the stockº [is] a doctrineº of vanities.º 9 Silverº spread into platesºª is broughtºª from Tarshish,º² and goldº from Uphaz,º² the workº of the workman,º and of the handsº of the founder:ºª blueº and purpleº [is] their clothing:º they [are] all² the workº of cunningº [men]. 10 But the LORDº [is] the trueº God,º he² [is] the livingº God,º and an everlastingº king:º at his wrathº² the earthº shall tremble,ºª and the nationsº shall not² be able to abideºª his indignation.º 11 Thusº shall ye sayºª unto them, The godsº that² have notº madeºª the heavensº and the earth,º [even] they shall perishºª from the earth,º² and from² underº theseº heavens.º 12 He hath madeºª the earthº by his power,º he hath establishedºª the worldº by his wisdom,º and hath stretched outºª the heavensº by his discretion.º 13 When he utterethºª his voice,º [there is] a multitudeº of watersº in the heavens,º and he causeth the vapoursº to ascendºª from the endsº² of the earth;º he makethºª lightningsº with rain,º and bringeth forthºª the windº out of his treasures.º² 14 Every² manº is brutishºª in [his] knowledge:º² every² founderºª is confoundedºª by the graven image:º² for² his molten imageº [is] falsehood,º and [there is] no² breathº in them. 15 They² [are] vanity,º [and] the workº of errors:º in the timeº of their visitationº they shall perish.ºª 16 The portionº of Jacobº [is] not² like them:² for² he² [is] the formerºª of all² [things]; and Israelº [is] the rodº of his inheritance:º The LORDº of hostsº [is] his name.º
