1 The word° which° aIsaiah° the son° of Amoz° saw° concerning° Judah° and Jerusalem°.

[1] aIs 1:1

  2 ¶ Now it will come° about that
  aIn the last° days°
  The bmountain° of the house° of the LORD°
  Will be established° Ias the chief° of the mountains°,
  And will be raised° above° the hills°;
  And call° the nations° will stream° to it.
  3 And many° peoples° will come° and say°,
  “Come°, let us go° up to the mountain° of the LORD°,
  To the house° of the God° of Jacob°;
  That He may teach° us Iconcerning° His ways°
  And that we may walk° in His paths°.”
  For the IIlaw° will go° forth° afrom Zion°
  And the word° of the LORD° from Jerusalem°.
  4 And He will judge° between° the nations°,
  And will Irender° decisions° for many° peoples°;
  And athey will hammer° their swords° into plowshares° and their spears° into pruning° hooks°.
  bNation° will not lift° up sword° against° nation°,
  And never° again° will they learn° war°.

  5 ¶ Come°, ahouse° of Jacob°, and let us walk° in the blight° of the LORD°.
  6 For You have aabandoned° Your people°, the house° of Jacob°,
  Because° they are filled° [with influences] from the east°,
  And [they are] soothsayers° blike the Philistines°,
  And they cstrike° [bargains] with the children° of foreigners°.
  7 Their land° has also been filled° with silver° and gold°
  And there° is no° end° to their treasures°;
  Their land° has also been filled° with ahorses°
  And there° is no° end° to their chariots°.
  8 Their land° has also been afilled° with idols°;
  They worship° the bwork° of their hands°,
  That which° their fingers° have made°.
  9 So athe [common] man° has been° humbled°
  And the man° [of importance] has been° abased°,
  But bdo not forgive° them.
  10 aEnter° the rock° and hide° in the dust°
  bFrom the terror° of the LORD° and from the splendor° of His majesty°.
  11 The Iaproud° look° of man° will be abased°
  And the bloftiness° of man° will be humbled°,
  And the LORD° alone° will be exalted° in that day°.

A Day of Reckoning Coming

  12 ¶ For the LORD° of hosts° will have a day° [of reckoning]
  Against° aeveryone° who° is proud° and lofty°
  And against° everyone° who is lifted° up,
  That he may be abased°.
  13 And [it will be] against° all° the cedars° of Lebanon° that are lofty° and lifted° up,
  Against° all° the aoaks° of Bashan°,
  14 Against° all° the alofty° mountains°,
  Against° all° the hills° that are lifted° up,
  15 Against° every° ahigh° tower°,
  Against° every° fortified° wall°,
  16 Against° all° the aships° of Tarshish°
  And against° all° the beautiful° craft°.
  17 The pride° of man° will be humbled°
  And the loftiness° of men° will be abased°;
  And the LORD° alone° will be exalted° in that day°,
  18 But the aidols° will completely° vanish°.
  19 [Men] will ago° into caves° of the rocks°
  And into holes° of the Iground°
  Before°° the terror° of the LORD°
  And the splendor° of His majesty°,
  When He arises° bto make° the earth° tremble°.
  20 In that day° men° will acast° away° to the moles° and the bbats°
  Their idols° of silver° and their idols° of gold°,
  Which° they made° for themselves to worship°,
  21 In order to ago° into the caverns° of the rocks° and the clefts° of the cliffs°
  Before°° the terror° of the LORD° and the splendor° of His majesty°,
  When He arises° to make° the earth° tremble°.
  22 IaStop° regarding°° man°, whose° breath° [of life] is in his nostrils°;
  For IIbwhy° should he be esteemed°?

Isaiah prophesieth the coming of Christ's Kingdom.

Wickedness is the cause of God's forsaking.

6 ¶ Therefore² thou hast forsakenºª thy peopleº the houseº of Jacob,º because² they be replenishedºª from the east,º² and [are] soothsayersºª like the Philistines,º and they please¹ª themselves² in the childrenº of strangers.º 7 Their landº also is fullºª of silverº and gold,º neither² [is there any] endº of their treasures;º their landº is also fullºª of horses,º neither² [is there any] endº of their chariots:º 8 Their landº also is fullºª of idols;º they worshipºª the workº of their own hands,º that which² their own fingersº have made:ºª 9 And the mean manº boweth down,ºª and the great manº humblethºª himself: therefore forgiveºª them not.²

He exhorteth to fear, because of the powerful effects of God's majesty.

10 ¶ Enterºª into the rock,º and hideºª thee in the dust,º forº² fearº of the LORD,º and for the gloryº² of his majesty.º 11 The loftyº looksº of manº shall be humbled,ºª and the haughtinessº of men¹² shall be bowed down,ºª and the LORDº alone² shall be exaltedºª in that² day.º 12 For² the dayº of the LORDº of hostsº [shall be] upon² every² [one that is] proudº and lofty,ºª and upon² every² [one that is] lifted up;ºª and he shall be brought low:ºª 13 And upon² all² the cedarsº of Lebanon,º [that are] highºª and lifted up,ºª and upon² all² the oaksº of Bashan,º 14 And upon² all² the highºª mountains,º and upon² all² the hillsº [that are] lifted up,ºª 15 And upon² every² highº tower,º and upon² every² fencedºª wall,º 16 And upon² all² the shipsº of Tarshish,º and upon² all² pleasantº pictures.º 17 And the loftinessº of manº shall be bowed down,ºª and the haughtinessº of men¹² shall be made low:ºª and the LORDº alone² shall be exaltedºª in that² day.º 18 And the idolsº he shall utterlyº abolish.ºª 19 And they shall goºª into the holesº of the rocks,º and into the cavesº of the earth,º forº² fearº of the LORD,º and for the gloryº² of his majesty,º when he arisethºª to shake terriblyºª the earth.º 20 In that² dayº a manº shall castºª² his idolsº of silver,º and his idolsº of gold,º which² they made² [each one] for himself¹ª to worship,ºª to the molesºº and to the bats;º 21 To goºª into the cleftsº of the rocks,º and into the topsº of the ragged rocks,º forº² fearº of the LORD,º and for the gloryº² of his majesty,º when he arisethºª to shake terriblyºª the earth.º 22 Ceaseºª ye from² man,º whose² breathº [is] in his nostrils:º for² wherein² is he² to be accounted² of?¹ª
