False Prophets Denounced

Against false prophets,

9 ¶ Mine heartº withinº me is brokenºª because of the prophets;º all² my bonesº shake;ºª I am² like a drunkenº man,º and like a manº whom wineº hath overcome,ºª becauseº² of the LORD,º and because²² of the wordsº of his holiness.º 10 For² the landº is fullºª of adulterers;ºª for² becauseº² of swearingº the landº mourneth;ºª the pleasant placesº of the wildernessº are dried up,ºª and their courseº is² evil,º and their forceº [is] not² right.² 11 For² both² prophetº and² priestº are profane;ºª yea,² in my houseº have I foundºª their wickedness,º saithºª the LORD.º 12 Wherefore² their wayº shall be² unto them as slipperyº [ways] in the darkness:º they shall be driven on,ºª and fallºª therein: for² I will bringºª evilº upon² them, [even] the yearº of their visitation,º saithºª the LORD.º 13 And I have seenºª follyº in the prophetsº of Samaria;º they prophesiedºª in Baal,º and caused² my peopleº² Israelº to err.ºª 14 I have seenºª also in the prophetsº of Jerusalemº an horrible thing:º they commit adultery,ºª and walkºª in lies:º they strengthenºª also the handsº of evildoers,ºª that noneº² doth returnºª from his wickedness:º² they are² all² of them unto me as Sodom,º and the inhabitantsºª thereof as Gomorrah.º 15 Therefore² thus² saithºª the LORDº of hostsº concerning² the prophets;º Behold,² I will feedºª them with wormwood,º and make them drinkºª the waterº of gall:º for² from²² the prophetsº of Jerusalemº is profanenessº gone forthºª into all² the land.º 16 Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º Hearkenºª not² unto² the wordsº of the prophetsº that prophesyºª unto you: they make you vain:ºª² they² speakºª a visionº of their own heart,º [and] not² out of the mouthº² of the LORD.º 17 They say¹ª stillºª unto them that despiseºª me, The LORDº hath said,ºª Ye shall have² peace;º and they sayºª unto every one² that walkethºª after the imaginationº of his own heart,º No² evilº shall comeºª upon² you. 18 For² who² hath stoodºª in the counselº of the LORD,º and hath perceivedºª and heardºª² his word?º who² hath markedºª his word,º and heardºª [it]? 19 Behold,² a whirlwindº of the LORDº is gone forthºª in fury,º even a grievousºª whirlwind:º it shall fall grievouslyºª upon² the headº of the wicked.º 20 The angerº of the LORDº shall not² return,ºª until² he have executed,ºª and till² he have performedºª the thoughtsº of his heart:º in the latterº daysº ye shall considerºª it perfectly.º 21 I have not² sentºª² these prophets,º yet they² ran:ºª I have not² spokenºª to² them, yet they² prophesied.ºª 22 But if² they had stoodºª in my counsel,º and had caused² my peopleº to hearºª my words,º then they should have turnedºª them from their evilº way,º² and from the evilº² of their doings.º 23 [Am] I² a Godº at hand,º² saithºª the LORD,º and not² a Godº afar off?º² 24 Can² anyº hide¹ª himself² in secret placesº that I² shall not² seeºª him? saithºª the LORD.º Do not² I² fill¹²² heavenº and earth?º saithºª the LORD.º 25 I have heardºª² what² the prophetsº said,ºª that prophesyºª liesº in my name,º saying,ºª I have dreamed,ºª I have dreamed.ºª 26 How long²² shall [this] beº in the heartº of the prophetsº that prophesyºª lies?º yea, [they are] prophetsº of the deceitº of their own heart;º 27 Which thinkºª to cause² my peopleº to forgetºª my nameº by their dreamsº which² they tellºª every manº to his neighbour,º as² their fathersº have forgottenºª² my nameº for Baal.º 28 The prophetº that²² hath a dream,º let him tellºª a dream;º and he that²² hath my word,º let him speakºª my wordº faithfully.º What² [is] the chaffº to² the wheat?º saithºª the LORD.º 29 [Is] not² my wordº likeº as a fire?º saithºª the LORD;º and like a hammerº [that] breakethºª the rockº in pieces?¹ª 30 Therefore,² behold,² I [am] against² the prophets,º saithºª the LORD,º that stealºª my wordsº every oneº from²² his neighbour.º 31 Behold,² I [am] against² the prophets,º saithºª the LORD,º that useºª their tongues,º and say,ºª He saith.ºª 32 Behold,² I [am] against² them that prophesyºª falseº dreams,º saithºª the LORD,º and do tellºª them, and cause² my peopleº to errºª by their lies,º and by their lightness;º yet I² sentºª them not,² nor² commandedºª them: therefore they shall not² profit¹ª this people¹ at all,ºª²² saithºª the LORD.º

and mockers of the true prophets.

33 ¶ And when² this² people,º or² the prophet,º or² a priest,º shall askºª thee, saying,ºª What² [is] the burdenº of the LORD?º thou shalt then sayºª unto² them,² What² burden?º I will even forsakeºª you, saithºª the LORD.º 34 And [as for] the prophet,º and the priest,º and the people,º that² shall say,ºª The burdenº of the LORD,º I will even punishºª² that² manº and his house.º 35 Thus² shall ye sayºª every oneº to² his neighbour,º and every oneº to² his brother,º What² hath the LORDº answered?ºª and, What² hath the LORDº spoken?ºª 36 And the burdenº of the LORDº shall ye mentionºª no² more:² for² every man'sº wordº shall be² his burden;º for ye have pervertedºª² the wordsº of the livingº God,º of the LORDº of hostsº our God.º 37 Thus² shalt thou sayºª to² the prophet,º What² hath the LORDº answeredºª thee? and, What² hath the LORDº spoken?ºª 38 But¹ since² ye say,ºª The burdenº of the LORD;º therefore² thus² saithºª the LORD;º Because² ye sayºª² this² word,º The burdenº of the LORD,º and I have sentºª unto² you, saying,ºª Ye shall not² say,ºª The burdenº of the LORD;º 39 Therefore,² behold,² I, even I, will utterly¹ª forgetºª you, and I will forsakeºª you, and the cityº that² I gaveºª you and your fathers,º [and cast you] out of²² my presence:º 40 And I will bringºª an everlastingº reproachº upon² you, and a perpetualº shame,º which² shall not² be forgotten.ºª
