The Potter and the Clay

1 The word° which° came° to Jeremiah° from the LORD° saying°, 2 “Arise° and ago° down° to the potter’s° house°, and there° I will announce° My words° to you.” 3 Then I went° down° to the potter’s° house°, and there° he was, making° something° on the Iwheel°. 4 But the vessel° that he was making° of clay° was spoiled° in the hand° of the potter°; so he remade°° it into another° vessel°, as it pleased°° the potter° to make°.

5 ¶ Then the word° of the LORD° came° to me saying°, 6 “Can° I not, O house° of Israel°, deal° with you as this° potter° [does]?” declares° the LORD°. “Behold°, like the aclay° in the potter’s° hand°, so° are you in My hand°, O house° of Israel°. 7 At one moment° I might speak° concerning° a nation° or concerning° a kingdom° to auproot°, to pull° down°, or to destroy° [it]; 8 aif that nation° against° which° I have spoken° turns° from its evil°, I will Ibrelent° concerning° the calamity° I planned° to bring° on it. 9 Or at another moment° I might speak° concerning° a nation° or concerning° a kingdom° to abuild° up or to plant° [it]; 10 if it does° aevil° in My sight° by not obeying° My voice°, then I will Ibthink° better° of the good° with which° I had promised° to IIbless° it. 11 So now° then, speak° to the men° of Judah° and against° the inhabitants° of Jerusalem° saying°, ‘Thus° says° the LORD°, “Behold°, I am afashioning° calamity° against° you and devising° a plan° against° you. Oh° bturn° back°, each° of you from his evil° way°, and Ireform° your ways° and your deeds°.”’ 12 But athey will say°, ‘It’s hopeless°! For we are going° to follow°° our own plans°, and each° of us will act° according to the bstubbornness° of his evil° heart°.’

Under the type of a potter is shewed God's absolute power in disposing of nations.

1 ¶ The wordº which² came² to² Jeremiahº from²² the LORD,º saying,ºª 2 Arise,ºª and go downºª to the potter'sºª house,º and there² I will cause thee to hearºª² my words.º 3 Then I went downºª to the potter'sºª house,º and, behold,º he wroughtºª a workº on² the wheels.º 4 And the vesselº that² he² madeºª of clayº was marredºª in the handº of the potter:ºª so he madeºª it againºª anotherº vessel,º as² seemedº goodºª to the potterºª to makeºª [it]. 5 Then the wordº of the LORDº came² to² me, saying,ºª 6 O houseº of Israel,º cannotºª² I doºª with you as this² potter?ºª saithºª the LORD.º Behold,² as the clayº [is] in the potter'sºª hand,º so² [are] ye² in mine hand,º O houseº of Israel.º 7 [At what] instantº I shall speakºª concerning² a nation,º and concerning² a kingdom,º to pluck up,ºª and to pull down,ºª and to destroyºª [it]; 8 If that² nation,º against² whom² I have pronounced,ºª turnºª from their evil,º² I will repentºª of² the evilº that² I thoughtºª to doºª unto them. 9 And [at what] instantº I shall speakºª concerning² a nation,º and concerning² a kingdom,º to buildºª and to plantºª [it]; 10 If it doºª evilº in my sight,º that it obeyºª not² my voice,º then I will repentºª of² the good,º wherewith² I saidºª I would benefitºª them.
