Message to the Exiles

1 Now these° are the words° of the aletter° which° Jeremiah° the prophet° sent° from Jerusalem° to the rest° of the elders° of the exile°, the priests°, the prophets° and all° the people° whom° Nebuchadnezzar° had taken° into exile° from Jerusalem° to Babylon°. 2 (This was after° King° aJeconiah° and the bqueen° mother°, the court° officials°, the princes° of Judah° and Jerusalem°, the craftsmen° and the smiths° had departed° from Jerusalem°.) 3 [The letter was sent] by the hand° of Elasah° the son° of Shaphan°, and Gemariah° the son° of aHilkiah°, whom° Zedekiah° king° of Judah° sent° to Babylon° to Nebuchadnezzar° king° of Babylon°, saying°, 4 “Thus° says° the LORD° of hosts°, the God° of Israel°, to all° the exiles° whom° I have asent° into exile° from Jerusalem° to Babylon°, 5aBuild° houses° and live° [in them]; and plant° gardens° and eat° their Iproduce°. 6 Take° awives° and Ibecome° the fathers° of sons° and daughters°, and take° wives° for your sons° and give° your daughters° to husbands°, that they may bear° sons° and daughters°; and multiply° there° and do not decrease°. 7 aSeek° the Iwelfare° of the city° where°° I have sent° you into exile°, and bpray° to the LORD° on its behalf°; for in its Iwelfare° you will have° Iwelfare°.’ 8 For thus° says° the LORD° of hosts°, the God° of Israel°, ‘Do not let your aprophets° who° are in your midst° and your diviners° bdeceive° you, and do not listen° to Icthe dreams° which° IIthey dream°. 9 For they aprophesy° falsely° to you in My name°; bI have not sent° them,’ declares° the LORD°.

10 ¶ “For thus° says° the LORD°, ‘When° aseventy° years° have been° completed° for Babylon°, I will visit° you and fulfill° My bgood° word° to you, to bring° you back° to this° place°. 11 For I know° the aplans° that I Ihave° for you,’ declares° the LORD°, ‘plans° for bwelfare° and not for calamity° to give° you a future° and a chope°. 12 Then you will acall° upon Me and come° and pray° to Me, and I will blisten° to you. 13 You will aseek° Me and find° [Me] when° you bsearch° for Me with all° your heart°. 14 I will be afound° by you,’ declares° the LORD°, ‘and I will brestore° your Ifortunes° and will cgather° you from all° the nations° and from all° the places° where°° I have driven° you,’ declares° the LORD°, ‘and I will dbring° you back° to the place° from where°° I sent° you into exile°.’

15 ¶ “Because° you have said°, ‘The LORD° has raised° up aprophets° for us in Babylon°’— 16 for thus° says° the LORD° concerning° the king° who sits° on the throne° of David°, and concerning° all° the people° who dwell° in this° city°, your brothers° who° did anot go° with you into exile°17 thus° says° the LORD° of hosts°, ‘Behold°, I am sending° upon them the asword°, famine° and pestilence°, and I will make° them like bsplit-open° figs° that cannot° be eaten° due° to rottenness°. 18 I will pursue° them with the sword°, with famine° and with pestilence°; and I will amake° them a terror° to all° the kingdoms° of the earth°, to be a bcurse° and a horror° and a chissing°, and a reproach° among all° the nations° where°° I have driven° them, 19 because°° they have anot listened° to My words°,’ declares° the LORD°, ‘which° I sent° to them again° and again° by bMy servants° the prophets°; but you did not listen°,’ declares° the LORD°. 20 You, therefore, hear° the word° of the LORD°, all° you exiles°, whom° I have asent° away° from Jerusalem° to Babylon°.

21 ¶ “Thus° says° the LORD° of hosts°, the God° of Israel°, concerning° Ahab° the son° of Kolaiah° and concerning° Zedekiah° the son° of Maaseiah°, who are aprophesying° to you falsely° in My name°, ‘Behold°, I will deliver° them into the hand° of Nebuchadnezzar° king° of Babylon°, and he will slay° them before your eyes°. 22 Because° of them a acurse° will be Iused° by all° the exiles° from Judah° who° are in Babylon°, saying°, “May the LORD° make° you like Zedekiah° and like Ahab°, whom° the king° of Babylon° broasted° in the fire°, 23 because°° they have aacted° foolishly° in Israel°, and bhave committed° adultery° with their neighbors’° wives° and have cspoken° words° in My name° falsely°, which° I did not command° them; and I am He who dknows° and am a witness°,” declares° the LORD°.’”

24 ¶ To aShemaiah° the Nehelamite° you shall speak°, saying°, 25 “Thus° says° the LORD° of hosts°, the God° of Israel°, ‘Because°° you have sent° aletters° in your own name° to all° the people° who° are in Jerusalem°, and to bZephaniah° the son° of Maaseiah°, the priest°, and to all° the priests°, saying°, 26 “The LORD° has made° you priest° instead° of Jehoiada° the priest°, to be the Iaoverseer° in the house° of the LORD° over every° bmadman° who cprophesies°, to dput° him in the stocks° and in the iron° collar°, 27 now° then, why° have you not rebuked° Jeremiah° of aAnathoth° who prophesies° to you? 28 For he has asent° to us in Babylon°, saying°, ‘[The exile] will be blong°; cbuild° houses° and live° [in them] and plant° gardens° and eat° their Iproduce°.’”’”

Jeremiah sendeth a letter to the captives in Babylon, to be quiet there,

and not to believe the dreams of their prophets,

8 ¶ For² thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Let not² your prophetsº and your diviners,ºª that² [be] in the midstº of you, deceiveºª you, neither² hearkenºª to² your dreamsº which² ye² cause to be dreamed.ºª 9 For² they² prophesyºª falselyº unto you in my name:º I have not² sentºª them, saithºª the LORD.º

and that they shall return with grace after seventy years.

10 ¶ For² thus² saithºª the LORD,º That² afterº seventyº yearsº be accomplishedºª at Babylonº I will visitºª you, and performºª² my goodº wordº toward² you, in causing you to returnºª² to² this² place.º 11 For² I² knowºª² the thoughtsº that² I² thinkºª toward² you, saithºª the LORD,º thoughtsº of peace,º and not² of evil,º to giveºª you an expectedº end.º 12 Then shall ye call¹ª upon² me, and ye shall goºª and prayºª unto² me, and I will hearkenºª unto² you. 13 And ye shall seekºª me, and findºª [me], when² ye shall search¹ª for² me with all² your heart.º 14 And I will be foundºª of you, saithºª the LORD:º and I will turn awayºª² your captivity,ºª and I will gatherºª you from all²² the nations,º and from all²² the placesº whither²² I have drivenºª you, saithºª the LORD;º and I will bring you againºª² into² the placeº whence²²² I caused you to be carried away captive.ºª

He foretelleth the destruction of the rest for their disobedience.

15 ¶ Because² ye have said,ºª The LORDº hath raised us upºª prophetsº in Babylon;º 16 [Know] that² thus² saithºª the LORDº of² the kingº that sittethºª upon² the throneº of David,º and of² all² the peopleº that dwellethºª in this² city,º [and] of your brethrenº that² are not² gone forthºª with² you into captivity;º 17 Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts;º Behold,² I will sendºª upon them² the sword,º² the famine,º and the pestilence,º and will makeºª them like vileº figs,º that² cannot² be eaten,ºª they are so evil.º² 18 And I will persecuteºª² them¹ with the sword,º with the famine,º and with the pestilence,º and will deliverºª them to be removedºª¹ to all² the kingdomsº of the earth,º to be a curse,º and an astonishment,º and an hissing,º and a reproach,º among all² the nationsº whither²² I have drivenºª them: 19 Because²² they have not² hearkenedºª to² my words,º saithºª the LORD,º which² I sentºª unto² them by² my servantsº the prophets,º rising up earlyºª and sendingºª [them]; but ye would not² hear,ºª saithºª the LORD.º

He sheweth the fearful end of Ahab and Zedekiah, two lying prophets.

Shemaiah writeth a letter against Jeremiah.

24 ¶ [Thus] shalt thou also speakºª to² Shemaiahº the Nehelamite,º saying,ºª 25 Thus² speakethºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel,º saying,ºª Because²² thou² hast sentºª lettersº in thy nameº unto² all² the peopleº that² [are] at Jerusalem,º and to² Zephaniahº the sonº of Maaseiahº the priest,º and to² all² the priests,º saying,ºª 26 The LORDº hath madeºª thee priestº in the stead of² Jehoiadaº the priest,º that ye should be² officersº in the houseº of the LORD,º for every² manº [that is] mad,ºª and maketh himself a prophet,ºª that thou shouldest putºª him in² prison,º and in² the stocks.º 27 Now² therefore why² hast thou not² reprovedºª Jeremiahº of Anathoth,º which maketh himself a prophetºª to you? 28 For² therefore²² he sentºª unto² us [in] Babylon,º saying,ºª Thisº [captivity is] long:º buildºª ye houses,º and dwellºª [in them]; and plantºª gardens,º and eatºª² the fruitº of them. 29 And Zephaniahº the priestº readºª² this² letterº in the earsº of Jeremiahº the prophet.º

Jeremiah readeth his doom.

30 ¶ Then came² the wordº of the LORDº unto² Jeremiah,º saying,ºª 31 Sendºª to² all² them of the captivity,º saying,ºª Thus² saithºª the LORDº concerning² Shemaiahº the Nehelamite;º Because²² that Shemaiahº hath prophesiedºª unto you, and I² sentºª him not,² and he caused you to trustºª² in² a lie:º 32 Therefore² thus² saithºª the LORD;º Behold,² I will punishºª² Shemaiahº the Nehelamite,º and his seed:º he shall not² have² a manº to dwellºª amongº this² people;º neither² shall he beholdºª the goodº that² I² will doºª for my people,º saithºª the LORD;º because² he hath taughtºª rebellionº against² the LORD.º
