The Marriage of Ruth

1 Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and behold, athe Iclose relative of whom Boaz spoke was passing by, so he said, “Turn aside, IIfriend, sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. 2 He took ten men of the aelders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. 3 Then he said to the Iclosest relative, “Naomi, who has come back from the land of Moab, has to sell the piece of land awhich belonged to our brother Elimelech. 4 So I thought to Iinform you, saying, ‘aBuy [it] before those who are sitting [here], and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem [it], redeem [it]; but if IInot, tell me that I may know; for bthere is no one but you to redeem [it], and I am after you.’” And he said, “I will redeem [it].” 5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, in order ato raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.” 6 aThe Iclosest relative said, “I cannot redeem [it] for myself, because I would IIjeopardize my own inheritance. Redeem [it] for yourself; you [may have] my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem [it].”

7 ¶ Now this was a[the custom] in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and the exchange [of land] to confirm any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the [manner of] attestation in Israel. 8 So the Iclosest relative said to Boaz, “Buy [it] for yourself.” And he removed his sandal. 9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon. 10 Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so athat the name of the deceased will not be cut off from his brothers or from the Icourt of his [birth] place; you are witnesses today.” 11 All the people who were in the Icourt, and the elders, said, “[We are] witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your home alike Rachel and Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and may you achieve IIwealth in Ephrathah and IIIbecome famous in Bethlehem. 12 Moreover, may your house be like the house of aPerez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the Ioffspring which the LORD will give you by this young woman.”

Boaz calleth into judgment the next kinsman.

1 ¶ Then went¬ Boaz up¬ to the gate, and sat him down¬ there: and, behold, the kinsman¬ of whom Boaz spake¬ came¬ by; unto whom he said,¬ Ho, such a one! turn aside,¬ sit down¬ here. And he turned aside,¬ and sat down.¬ 2 And he took¬ ten men of the elders of the city, and said,¬ Sit ye down¬ here. And they sat down.¬ 3 And he said¬ unto the kinsman,¬ Naomi, that is come again¬ out of the country of Moab, selleth¬ a parcel of land, which [was] our brother Elimelech's: 4 And I thought¬ to advertise¬ thee, saying,¬ Buy¬ [it] before the inhabitants,¬ and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem¬ [it], redeem¬ [it]: but if thou wilt not redeem¬ [it, then] tell¬ me, that I may know:¬ for [there is] none to redeem¬ [it] beside thee; and I [am] after thee. And he said,¬ I will redeem¬ [it]. 5 Then said¬ Boaz, What day thou buyest¬ the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy¬ [it] also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead,¬ to raise up¬ the name of the dead¬ upon his inheritance.

He refuseth the redemption according to the manner in Israel.

6 ¶ And the kinsman¬ said,¬ I cannot¬ redeem¬ [it] for myself, lest I mar¬ mine own inheritance: redeem¬ thou my right to thyself; for I cannot¬ redeem¬ [it]. 7 Now this [was the manner] in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm¬ all things; a man plucked off¬ his shoe, and gave¬ [it] to his neighbour: and this [was] a testimony in Israel. 8 Therefore the kinsman¬ said¬ unto Boaz, Buy¬ [it] for thee.
