The kindness of Jacob and Esau at their meeting.

1 ¶ And Jacobº lifted upºª his eyes,º and looked,ºª and, behold,² Esauº came,ºª and with² him fourº hundredº men.º And he dividedºª² the childrenº unto² Leah,º and unto² Rachel,º and unto² the twoº handmaids.º 2 And he putºª² the handmaidsº and their childrenº foremost,º and Leahº and her childrenº after,º and Rachelº and Josephº hindermost.º 3 And he² passed overºª before² them,¹ and bowed himselfºª to the groundº sevenº times,º until² he came nearºª to² his brother.º 4 And Esauº ranºª to meet² him,¹ª and embracedºª him, and fellºª on² his neck,º and kissed² him:¹ª and they wept.ºª 5 And he lifted upºª² his eyes,º and sawºª² the womenº and the children;º and said,ºª Who² [are] thoseº with thee? And he said,ºª The childrenº which² Godº hath graciously givenºª² thy servant.º 6 Then the handmaidensº came near,ºª they² and their children,º and they bowed themselves.ºª 7 And Leahº also² with her childrenº came near,ºª and bowed themselves:ºª and afterº came¹ª Joseph¹ nearºª² and Rachel,º and they bowed¹ª themselves.² 8 And he said,ºª What² [meanest] thou by all² this² droveº which² I met?ºª And he said,ºª [These are] to findºª graceº in the sightº of my lord.º 9 And Esauº said,ºª I haveº enough,º my brother;º keep² that² thou hast unto thyself. 10 And Jacobº said,ºª Nay,² I pray thee,² if² now² I have foundºª graceº in thy sight,º then receiveºª my presentº at my hand:º² for² therefore²² I have seenºª thy face,º as though I had seenºª the faceº of God,º and thou wast pleased² with me.¹ª 11 Take,ºª I pray thee,²² my blessingº that² is broughtºª to thee; because² Godº hath dealt graciously² with me,¹ª and because¹ª² I haveº enough.º And he urgedºª him, and he tookºª [it]. 12 And he said,ºª Let us take our journey,ºª and let us go,¹ª² and I will go¹ª² before² thee. 13 And he saidºª unto² him, My lordº knowethºª that² the childrenº [are] tender,º and the flocksº and herdsº with youngºª [are] with² me: and if men should overdriveºª them oneº day,º all² the flockº will die.ºª 14 Let my lord,º I pray thee,² pass overºª beforeº his servant:º and I² will lead onºª softly,º according asº the cattleº that² goeth before² me¹ and the childrenº be able to endure,º until²² I comeºª unto² my lordº unto Seir.º 15 And Esauº said,ºª Let me now² leaveºª with² thee [some] of² the folkº that² [are] with² me. And he said,ºª Whatº needeth it?² let me findºª graceº in the sightº of my lord.º

16 ¶ So Esauº returnedºª that² dayº on his wayº unto Seir.º

Jacob cometh to Succoth.

17 And Jacobº journeyedºª to Succoth,º and builtºª him an house,º and madeºª boothsº for his cattle:º therefore²² the nameº of the placeº is calledºª Succoth.º

At Shalem he buyeth a field, and buildeth an altar called El-elohe-Israel.

18 ¶ And Jacobº cameºª to Shalem,¹² a cityº of Shechem,º which² [is] in the landº of Canaan,º when he cameºª from Padanaram;º² and pitched his tentºª² beforeº the city.º 19 And he boughtºª² a parcelº of a field,º where²² he had spreadºª his tent,º at the handº² of the childrenº of Hamor,º Shechem's¹² father,º for an hundredº pieces of money.º 20 And he erectedºª there² an altar,º and called² it¹ª Elelohe-Israel.º
