1 Now there° was a certain° man° from aRamathaim-zophim° from the bhill° country° of Ephraim°, and his name° was cElkanah° the son° of Jeroham°, the son° of Elihu°, the son° of Tohu°, the son° of Zuph°, an Ephraimite°. 2 He had atwo° wives°: the name° of one° was bHannah° and the name° of the other° Peninnah°; and Peninnah° had° children°, but Hannah° had° no° children°.

3 ¶ Now this° man° would go° up from his city° ayearly° bto worship° and to sacrifice° to the LORD° of hosts° in cShiloh°. And the two° sons° of Eli°, Hophni° and Phinehas°, were priests° to the LORD° there°. 4 When the day° came° that Elkanah° sacrificed°, he awould give° portions° to Peninnah° his wife° and to all° her sons° and her daughters°; 5 but to Hannah° he would give° a double° portion°, for he loved° Hannah°, abut the LORD° had closed° her womb°. 6 Her rival°, however, awould provoke° her bitterly°° to irritate° her, because° the LORD° had closed° her womb°. 7 It happened° year° after year°, as often° as she went° up to the house° of the LORD°, she would provoke° her; so she wept° and would not eat°. 8 Then Elkanah° her husband° said° to her, “Hannah°, why° do you weep° and why° do you not eat° and why° is your heart° sad°? aAm I not better° to you than° ten° sons°?”

9 ¶ Then Hannah° rose° after° eating° and drinking° in Shiloh°. Now Eli° the priest° was sitting° on the seat° by the doorpost° of athe temple° of the LORD°. 10 She, Igreatly° distressed°, prayed° to the LORD° and wept° bitterly°. 11 She amade° a vow° and said°, “O LORD° of hosts°, if° You will indeed° blook° on the affliction° of Your maidservant° and remember° me, and not forget° Your maidservant°, but will give° Your maidservant° a Ison°°, then I will give° him to the LORD° all° the days° of his life°, and ca razor° shall never° come° on his head°.”

12 ¶ Now it came° about, as she Icontinued° praying° before° the LORD°, that Eli° was watching° her mouth°. 13 As for Hannah°, ashe was speaking° in her heart°, only° her lips° were moving°, but her voice° was not heard°. So Eli° thought° she was drunk°. 14 Then Eli° said° to her, “aHow° long°° will you make° yourself drunk°? Put° away° your wine° from you.” 15 But Hannah° replied°, “No°, my lord°, I am a woman° Ioppressed° in spirit°; I have drunk° neither° wine° nor° strong° drink°, but I ahave poured° out my soul° before° the LORD°. 16 Do not Iconsider° your maidservant° as a worthless° woman°, for I have spoken° until° now° out of my great° concern° and IIprovocation°.” 17 Then Eli° answered° and said°, “aGo° in peace°; and may the God° of Israel° bgrant° your petition° that you have asked° of Him.” 18 She said°, “aLet your maidservant° find° favor° in your sight°.” So the woman° went° her way° and ate°, and bher face° was no° longer° [sad].

Samuel Is Born to Hannah

19 ¶ Then they arose° early° in the morning° and worshiped° before° the LORD°, and returned°° again° to their house° in aRamah°. And Elkanah° Ihad° relations° with Hannah° his wife°, and bthe LORD° remembered° her. 20 It came° about Iin due° time°, after Hannah° had conceived°, that she gave° birth° to a son°; and she named°° him Samuel°, [saying], “aBecause° I have asked° him of the LORD°.”

21 ¶ Then the man° Elkanah° awent° up with all° his household° to offer° to the LORD° the yearly° sacrifice° and [pay] his vow°. 22 But Hannah° did not go° up, for she said° to her husband°, “[I will not go up] until° the child° is weaned°; then I will abring° him, that he may appear° before° the LORD° and bstay° there° forever°°.” 23 aElkanah° her husband° said° to her, “Do° what° seems best° Ito you. Remain° until° you have weaned° him; only° bmay the LORD° confirm° His word°.” So the woman° remained° and nursed° her son° until° she weaned° him. 24 Now when° she had weaned° him, ashe took° him up with her, with a three-year-old° bull° and one° ephah° of flour° and a jug° of wine°, and brought° him to bthe house° of the LORD° in Shiloh°, although the child° was young°. 25 Then athey slaughtered° the bull°, and bbrought° the boy° to Eli°. 26 She said°, “Oh°, my lord°! aAs your soul° lives°, my lord°, I am the woman° who stood° here° beside° you, praying° to the LORD°. 27 aFor this° boy° I prayed°, and the LORD° has given° me my petition° which° I asked° of Him. 28 aSo I have also° Idedicated° him to the LORD°; as long°° as he lives° he is Idedicated° to the LORD°.” And bhe worshiped° the LORD° there°.

Elkanah a Levite having two wives, worshippeth yearly at Shiloh.

He cherisheth Hannah, though barren, and provoked by Peninah.

4 ¶ And when the timeº was² that Elkanahº offered,ºª he gaveºª to Peninnahº his wife,º and to all² her sonsº and her daughters,º portions:º 5 But unto Hannahº he gaveºª aº worthyº portion;º for² he lovedºª² Hannah:º but the LORDº had shut upºª her womb.º 6 And her adversaryº also² provokedºª her sore,º for to² make her fret,ºª because² the LORDº had shut¹ª upº² her womb.º 7 And [as] he didºª so² yearº by year,º whenº² she went upºª to the houseº² of the LORD,º so² she provokedºª her; therefore she wept,ºª and did not² eat.ºª 8 Then saidºª Elkanahº her husbandº to her, Hannah,º why² weepestºª thou? and why² eatestºª thou not?² and why² is thy heartº grieved?¹ª² [am] not² I² betterº to thee than tenº² sons?º

Hannah in grief prayeth for a child.

9 ¶ So Hannahº rose upºª afterº they had eatenºª in Shiloh,º and afterº they had drunk.ºª Now Eliº the priestº satºª upon² a seatº by² a postº of the templeº of the LORD.º 10 And she² [was] in bitternessº of soul,º and prayedºª unto² the LORD,º and wept¹ª sore.ºª 11 And she vowedºª a vow,º and said,ºª O LORDº of hosts,º if² thou wilt indeed¹ª lookºª on the afflictionº of thine handmaid,º and rememberºª me, and not² forgetºª² thine handmaid,º but wilt giveºª unto thine handmaidº a man¹² child,º then I will giveºª him unto the LORDº all² the daysº of his life,º and there shall no² razorº comeºª upon² his head.º

Eli first rebuking her, afterwards blesseth her.

12 And it came to pass,² as² she continuedºª prayingºª beforeº the LORD,º that Eliº markedºª² her mouth.º 13 Now Hannah,º she² spakeºª in² her heart;º only² her lipsº moved,ºª but her voiceº was not² heard:ºª therefore Eliº thoughtºª she had been drunken.º 14 And Eliº saidºª unto² her, How² long² wilt thou be drunken?ºª put awayºª² thy wineº from²² thee. 15 And Hannahº answeredºª and said,ºª No,² my lord,º I [am] a womanº of a sorrowfulº spirit:º I² have drunkºª neither² wineº nor strong drink,º but have poured outºª² my soulº beforeº the LORD.º 16 Countºª not²² thine handmaidº forº a daughter¹ of Belial:º² for² out of the abundanceº² of my complaintº and griefº have I spokenºª hitherto.²² 17 Then Eliº answeredºª and said,ºª Go¹ª² in peace:º and the Godº of Israelº grantºª [thee]² thy petitionº that² thou hast askedºª of²² him. 18 And she said,ºª Let thine handmaidº findºª graceº in thy sight.º So the womanº went¹ª² her way,º and did eat,ºª and her countenanceº was² no² more² [sad].

Hannah having born Samuel, stayeth at home till he be weaned.

19 ¶ And they rose up¹ª in the morning¹ early,ºª² and worshippedºª beforeº the LORD,º and returned,ºª and cameºª to² their houseº to Ramah:º and Elkanahº knewºª² Hannahº his wife;º and the LORDº rememberedºª her. 20 Wherefore it came to pass,² when the timeº was comeº about after Hannahº had conceived,ºª that she bareºª a son,º and calledºª² his nameº Samuel,º [saying], Because² I have askedºª him of the LORD.º² 21 And the manº Elkanah,º and all² his house,º went upºª to offerºª unto the LORDº² the yearlyº sacrifice,º and his vow.º 22 But Hannahº went not up;ºª² for² she saidºª unto her husband,º [I will not go up] until² the childº be weaned,ºª and [then] I will bringºª him, that he may appearºª² beforeº the LORD,º and there² abideºª for¹ ever.º² 23 And Elkanahº her husbandº saidºª unto her, Doºª what seemethº thee good;º tarryºª until² thou have weanedºª him; only² the LORDº establishºª² his word.º So the womanº abode,ºª and gave her son¹ suckºª²² until² she weanedºª him.

She presenteth him, according to her vow, to the LORD.

24 ¶ And when² she had weanedºª him, she took him upºª with² her, with threeº bullocks,º and oneº ephahº of flour,º and a bottleº of wine,º and broughtºª him unto the houseº of the LORDº in Shiloh:º and the childº [was] young.º 25 And they slewºª² a bullock,º and broughtºª² the childº to² Eli.º 26 And she said,ºª Ohº my lord,º [as] thy soulº liveth,º my lord,º I² [am] the womanº that stoodºª by² thee here,² prayingºª unto² the LORD.º 27 For² this² childº I prayed;ºª and the LORDº hath givenºª me² my petitionº which² I askedºª of²² him: 28 Therefore also² I² have lentºª him to the LORD;º as long² as² he livethº he² shall be² lentºª to the LORD.º And he worshippedºª the LORDº there.²
