Micah’s Idolatry

1 Now there was a man° of the hill° country° of Ephraim° whose name° was Micah°. 2 He said° to his mother°, “The eleven°° hundred° [pieces] of silver° which° were taken° from you, about which you uttered° a curse° Iin my hearing°, behold°, the silver° is with me; I took° it.” And his mother° said°, “Blessed° be my son° by the LORD°.” 3 He then returned° the eleven°° hundred° [pieces] of silver° to his mother°, and his mother° said°, “I wholly° dedicate° the silver° from my hand° to the LORD° for my son° ato make° a graven° image° and a molten° image°; now° therefore, I will return° Ithem to you.” 4 So when he returned° the silver° to his mother°, his mother° took° two hundred° [pieces] of silver° and gave° them to the silversmith° who made° Ithem into a graven° image° and a molten° image°, and IIthey were in the house° of Micah°. 5 And the man° Micah° had a Iashrine°° and he made° an bephod° and IIchousehold° idols° and IIIconsecrated°° one° of his sons°, dthat he might become° his priest°. 6 In those° days° athere° was no° king° in Israel°; bevery° man° did° what° was right° in his own eyes°.

7 ¶ Now there was a young° man° from aBethlehem° in Judah°, of the family° of Judah°, who° was a Levite°; and he was Istaying° there°. 8 Then the man° departed° from the city°, from Bethlehem° in Judah°, to Istay° wherever° he might find° [a place]; and as he made° his journey°, he came° to the ahill° country° of Ephraim° to the house° of Micah°. 9 Micah° said° to him, “Where° do you come° from?” And he said° to him, “I am a Levite° from Bethlehem° in Judah°, and I am going° to Istay° wherever° I may find° [a place].” 10 Micah° then said° to him, “Dwell° with me and be aa father° and a priest° to me, and I will give° you ten° [pieces] of silver° a year°, a suit° of clothes°, and your maintenance°.” So the Levite° went° [in]. 11 The Levite° agreed° to live° with the man°, and the young° man° became° to him like one° of his sons°. 12 So Micah° Iconsecrated°° the Levite°, and the young° man° abecame° his priest° and IIlived° in the house° of Micah°. 13 Then Micah° said°, “Now° I know° that the LORD° will prosper° me, seeing° I have° a Levite° as priest°.”

Of the money that Micah first stole, then restored, his mother maketh images,

1 ¶ And there was² a manº of mountº² Ephraim,º whose nameº [was] Micah.º 2 And he saidºª unto his mother,º The eleven hundredºº [shekels] of silverº that² were takenºª from thee, about which thou² cursedst,ºª and spakestºª of also² in mine ears,º behold,² the silverº [is] with² me; I² tookºª it. And his motherº said,ºª Blessedºª [be thou] of the LORD,º my son.º 3 And when he had restoredºª² the eleven hundredºº [shekels] of silverº to his mother,º his motherº said,ºª I had wholly¹ª dedicatedºª² the silverº unto the LORDº from my handº² for my son,º to makeºª a graven imageº and a molten image:º now² therefore I will restoreºª it unto thee. 4 Yet he restoredºª² the moneyº unto his mother;º and his motherº tookºª two hundredº [shekels] of silver,º and gaveºª them to the founder,ºª who madeºª thereof a graven imageº and a molten image:º and they were² in the houseº of Micah.º

and he ornaments for them.

5 And the manº Micahº had an houseº of gods,º and madeºª an ephod,º and teraphim,º and consecratedººª² oneº of his sons,º² who became² his priest.º 6 In those² daysº [there was] no² kingº in Israel,º [but] every manº didºª [that which was] rightº in his own eyes.º

He hireth a Levite to be his priest.

7 ¶ And there was² a young manº out of Bethlehemjudahºº² of the familyº² of Judah,º who² [was] a Levite,º and he² sojournedºª there.² 8 And the manº departed¹ª² out of the cityº² from Bethlehemjudahºº² to sojournºª where² he could findºª [a place]: and he cameºª to mountº Ephraimº to² the houseº of Micah,º as he journeyed.ººª 9 And Micahº saidºª unto him, Whenceº² comestºª thou? And he saidºª unto² him, I² [am] a Leviteº of Bethlehemjudah,ºº² and I² goºª to sojournºª where² I may findºª [a place]. 10 And Micahº saidºª unto him, Dwellºª with² me, and be² unto me a fatherº and a priest,º and I² will giveºª thee tenº [shekels] of silverº by the year,º and a suitº of apparel,º and thy victuals.º So the Leviteº went in.¹ª² 11 And the Leviteº was contentºª to dwellºª with² the man;º and the young manº was² unto him as oneº of his sons.º² 12 And Micahº consecratedººª² the Levite;º and the young manº became² his priest,º and was² in the houseº of Micah.º 13 Then saidºª Micah,º Now² knowºª I that² the LORDº will do me good,ºª seeing² I have² a Leviteº to [my] priest.º
