1 And it came° about in the days° of Amraphel° king° of aShinar°, Arioch° king° of Ellasar°, Chedorlaomer° king° of bElam°, and Tidal° king° of IGoiim°, 2 [that] they made° war° with Bera° king° of Sodom°, and with Birsha° king° of Gomorrah°, Shinab° king° of aAdmah°, and Shemeber° king° of bZeboiim°, and the king° of Bela° (that is, cZoar°). 3 All° these° Icame° as allies° to athe valley° of Siddim° (that is, bthe Salt° Sea°). 4 Twelve°° years° they had served° Chedorlaomer°, but the thirteenth°° year° they rebelled°. 5 In the fourteenth°° year° Chedorlaomer° and the kings° that were with him, came° and Idefeated° the aRephaim° in bAshteroth-karnaim° and the Zuzim° in Ham° and the Emim° in IIcShaveh-kiriathaim°, 6 and the aHorites° in their Mount° Seir°, as far° as bEl-paran°, which° is by the wilderness°. 7 Then they turned° back° and came° to En-mishpat° (that is, aKadesh°), and Iconquered° all° the country° of the Amalekites°, and also° the Amorites°, who lived° in bHazazon-tamar°. 8 And the king° of Sodom° and the king° of Gomorrah° and the king° of Admah° and the king° of Zeboiim° and the king° of Bela° (that is, Zoar°) came° out; and they arrayed° for battle° against° them in athe valley° of Siddim°, 9 against° Chedorlaomer° king° of Elam° and Tidal° king° of IGoiim° and Amraphel° king° of Shinar° and Arioch° king° of Ellasar°—four° kings° against° five°. 10 Now the valley° of Siddim° was full of tar° pits°; and athe kings° of Sodom° and Gomorrah° fled°, and they fell° Iinto them. But those who survived° fled° to the bhill° country°. 11 Then they took° all° the goods° of Sodom° and Gomorrah° and all° their food° supply°, and departed°. 12 They also took° Lot°, aAbram’s° nephew°°, and his possessions° and departed°, bfor he was living° in Sodom°.

13 ¶ Then Ia fugitive° came° and told° Abram° the aHebrew°. Now he was IIliving° by the IIIboaks° of Mamre° the Amorite°, brother° of Eshcol° and brother° of Aner°, and these° were IVcallies°° with Abram°. 14 When Abram° heard° that ahis Irelative° had been taken° captive°, he IIled° out his trained° men°, bborn° in his house°, three° hundred° and eighteen°°, and went° in pursuit° as far° as cDan°. 15 aHe divided° Ihis forces against° them by night°, he and his servants°, and IIdefeated° them, and pursued° them as far° as Hobah°, which° is IIInorth° of bDamascus°. 16 He abrought° back° all° the goods°, and also° brought° back° bhis Irelative° Lot° with his possessions°, and also° the women°, and the people°.

God’s Promise to Abram

17 ¶ Then after° his return° from the Idefeat° of Chedorlaomer° and the kings° who° were with him, athe king° of Sodom° went° out to meet° him at the valley° of Shaveh° (that is, bthe King’s° Valley°). 18 And aMelchizedek° king° of Salem° brought° out bbread° and wine°; now he was a cpriest° of IGod° Most° High°. 19 He blessed° him and said°,
  “Blessed° be Abram° of IGod° Most° High°,
  IIaPossessor° of heaven° and earth°;
  20 And blessed° be IGod° Most° High°,
  Who° has delivered° your enemies° into your hand°.”
aHe gave° him a tenth° of all°. 21 The king° of Sodom° said° to Abram°, “Give° the Ipeople° to me and take° the goods° for yourself.” 22 Abram° said° to the king° of Sodom°, “I have Isworn°° to the LORD° IIaGod° Most° High°, IIIbpossessor° of heaven° and earth°, 23 that aI will not take° a thread° or a sandal° thong° or anything° that is yours, for fear you would say°, ‘I have made° Abram° rich°.’ 24 II will take nothing° except° what° the young° men° have eaten°, and the share° of the men° who° went° with me, aAner°, Eshcol°, and Mamre°; let them take° their share°.”

The battle of four kings against five.

1 ¶ And it came to pass² in the daysº of Amraphelº kingº of Shinar,º Ariochº kingº of Ellasar,º Chedorlaomerº kingº of Elam,º and Tidalº kingº of nations;º 2 [That these] madeºª warº withº Beraº kingº of Sodom,º and with² Birshaº kingº of Gomorrah,º Shinabº kingº of Admah,º and Shemeberº kingº of Zeboiim,º and the kingº of Bela,º which² is¹ Zoar.º 3 All² these² were joined togetherºª in² the valeº of Siddim,º whichº is the saltº sea.º 4 Twelveºº yearsº they servedººª Chedorlaomer,º and in the thirteenthºº yearº they rebelled.ºª 5 And in the fourteenthºº yearº cameºª Chedorlaomer,º and the kingsº that² [were] with² him, and smoteºª² the Rephaimsº in Ashteroth Karnaim,º and the Zuzimsº in Ham,º and the Emimsº in Shaveh Kiriathaim,º 6 And the Horitesº in their mountº Seir,º unto² Elparan,º which² [is] byº the wilderness.º 7 And they returned,ºª and cameºª toº Enmishpat,º which² [is] Kadesh,º and smoteºª² all² the countryº of the Amalekites,º and also²² the Amorites,º that dweltºª in Hazezontamar.º 8 And there went outºª the kingº of Sodom,º and the kingº of Gomorrah,º and the kingº of Admah,º and the kingº of Zeboiim,º and the kingº of Belaº (the sameº [is] Zoar;)º and they joinedºª battleº with² them in the valeº of Siddim;º 9 With² Chedorlaomerº the kingº of Elam,º and with Tidalº kingº of nations,º and Amraphelº kingº of Shinar,º and Ariochº kingº of Ellasar;º fourº kingsº with² five.º 10 And the valeº of Siddimº [was full of]¹ slimepits;ºº and the kingsº of Sodomº and Gomorrahº fled,ºª and fellºª there;² and they that remainedºª fledºª to the mountain.º

Lot is taken prisoner.

Abram rescueth him.

22 And Abramº saidºª to² the kingº of Sodom,º I have lift upºª mine handº unto² the LORD,º the most highº God,º the possessorºª of heavenº and earth,º 23 That I will notº [take] from a threadº² even to² a shoelatchet,ºº and that I will notº takeºª any thing²² that² [is] thine, lest² thou shouldest say,ºª I² have made¹ª Abram¹ rich:ºª²² 24 Saveº only² that whichº the young menº have eaten,ºª and the portionº of the men¹² which² wentºª withº me, Aner,º Eshcol,º and Mamre;º let themº takeºª their portion.º
