Israel Crosses the Jordan

1 Then Joshua° rose° early° in the morning°; and he and all° the sons° of Israel° set° out from aShittim° and came° to the Jordan°, and they lodged° there° before° they crossed°. 2 aAt the end° of three° days° the officers° went° through° the midst° of the camp°; 3 and they commanded° the people°, saying°, “When you see° the aark° of the covenant° of the LORD° your God° with the Levitical° priests° carrying° it, then you shall set° out from your place° and go° after° it. 4 However°, there shall be between° you and it a distance° of about 2,000° Icubits° by measure°. Do not come° near° it, that you may know° the way° by which° you shall go°, for you have not passed° this way° before°°°.”

5 ¶ Then Joshua° said° to the people°, “aConsecrate° yourselves, for tomorrow° the LORD° will do° wonders° among° you.” 6 And Joshua° spoke° to the priests°, saying°, “Take° up the ark° of the covenant° and cross° over° ahead° of the people°.” So they took° up the ark° of the covenant° and went° ahead° of the people°.

7 ¶ Now the LORD° said° to Joshua°, “This° day° I will begin° to aexalt° you in the sight° of all° Israel°, that they may know° that just° as I have been° with Moses°, I will be with you. 8 You shall, moreover, command° the priests° who are carrying° the ark° of the covenant°, saying°, ‘When you come° to the edge° of the waters° of the Jordan°, you shall stand° [still] in the Jordan°.’” 9 Then Joshua° said° to the sons° of Israel°, “Come° here°, and hear° the words° of the LORD° your God°.” 10 Joshua° said°, “By this° you shall know° that athe living° God° is among° you, and that He will assuredly° bdispossess° from before° you the Canaanite°, the Hittite°, the Hivite°, the Perizzite°, the Girgashite°, the Amorite°, and the Jebusite°. 11 Behold°, the ark° of the covenant° of athe Lord° of all° the earth° is crossing° over° ahead° of you into the Jordan°. 12 Now° then, atake° for yourselves twelve°° men° from the tribes° of Israel°, one° man° for each°° tribe°. 13 It shall come° about when the soles° of the feet° of the priests° who carry° the ark° of the LORD°, the Lord° of all° the earth°, rest° in the waters° of the Jordan°, the waters° of the Jordan° will be cut° off°, [and] the waters° which are Iflowing° down° from above°° IIwill astand° in one° heap°.”

14 ¶ So when the people° set° out from their tents° to cross° the Jordan° with the priests° carrying° athe ark° of the covenant° before° the people°, 15 and when those who carried° the ark° came° into the Jordan°, and the feet° of the priests° carrying° the ark° were dipped° in the edge° of the water° (for the aJordan° overflows°° all° its banks° all° the days° of harvest°), 16 athe waters° which were Iflowing° down° from above°° stood° [and] rose° up in bone° heap°, a great° distance° away at Adam°, the city° that is beside°° Zarethan°; and those which were Iflowing° down° toward° the sea° of the cArabah°, the Salt° Sea°, were completely° cut° off°. So the people° crossed° opposite° Jericho°. 17 And the priests° who carried° the ark° of the covenant° of the LORD° stood° firm° aon dry° ground° in the middle° of the Jordan° while all° Israel° crossed° on dry° ground°, until°° all° the nation° had finished° crossing° the Jordan°.

Joshua cometh to Jordan.

1 ¶ And Joshuaº rose earlyºª in the morning;º and they removedºª from Shittim,º² and cameºª to² Jordan,º he² and all² the childrenº of Israel,º and lodgedºª there² before² they passed over.ºª

2 And it came to pass² afterº² threeº days,º that the officersºª wentºª throughº the host;º 3 And they commandedºª² the people,º saying,ºª When ye seeºª² the arkº of the covenantº of the LORDº your God,º and the priestsº the Levitesº bearingºª it, then ye² shall removeºª from your place,º² and goºª afterº it. 4 Yet² there shall be² a spaceº between² you and it, about two thousandº cubitsº by measure:º come not nearºª² unto² it, that²² ye may knowºª² the wayº by which² ye must go:¹ª² for² ye have not² passedºª [this] wayº heretofore.ºº² 5 And Joshuaº saidºª unto² the people,º Sanctify¹ª yourselves:² for² to morrowº the LORDº will doºª wondersºª amongº you. 6 And Joshuaº spakeºª unto² the priests,º saying,ºª Take upºª² the arkº of the covenant,º and pass overºª beforeº the people.º And they took upºª² the arkº of the covenant,º and went¹ª² beforeº the people.º

The LORD encourageth Joshua.

7 ¶ And the LORDº saidºª unto² Joshua,º This² dayº will I beginºª to magnifyºª thee in the sightº of all² Israel,º that² they may knowºª that,² as² I was² with² Moses,º [so] I will be² with² thee. 8 And thou² shalt commandºª² the priestsº that bearºª the arkº of the covenant,º saying,ºª When ye are comeºª to² the brinkº of the waterº of Jordan,º ye shall stand stillºª in Jordan.º

Joshua encourageth the people.

9 ¶ And Joshuaº saidºª unto² the childrenº of Israel,º Come² hither,¹ª² and hearºª² the wordsº of the LORDº your God.º 10 And Joshuaº said,ºª Hereby² ye shall knowºª that² the livingº Godº [is] amongº you, and [that] he will without fail¹ª drive outºª from beforeº² you² the Canaanites,º and the Hittites,º and the Hivites,º and the Perizzites,º and the Girgashites,º and the Amorites,º and the Jebusites.º 11 Behold,² the arkº of the covenantº of the Lordº of all² the earthº passeth overºª beforeº you into Jordan.º 12 Now² therefore takeºª you twelveºº menº out of the tribesº² of Israel,º out of every¹ tribe¹ a man.ºº² 13 And it shall come to pass,² as soon as the solesº of the feetº of the priestsº that bearºª the arkº of the LORD,º the Lordº of all² the earth,º shall restºª in the watersº of Jordan,º [that] the watersº of Jordanº shall be cut offºª [from] the watersº that come downºª from above;º² and they shall standºª upon anº heap.º

The waters of Jordan are divided.

14 ¶ And it came to pass,² when the peopleº removedºª from their tents,º² to pass overºª² Jordan,º and the priestsº bearingºª the arkº of the covenantº beforeº the people;º 15 And as they that bareºª the arkº were comeºª unto² Jordan,º and the feetº of the priestsº that bareºª the arkº were dippedºª in the brimº of the water,º (for Jordanº overflowethºª² all² his banksº all² the timeº of harvest,)º 16 That the watersº which came downºª from aboveº² stoodºª [and] rose upºª upon anº heapº veryº farºª from the cityº Adam,º² that² [is] besideº² Zaretan:º and those that came downºª toward² the seaº of the plain,º [even] the saltº sea,º failed,ºª [and] were cut off:ºª and the peopleº passed overºª right against² Jericho.º 17 And the priestsº that bareºª the arkº of the covenantº of the LORDº stoodºª firmºª on dry groundº in the midstº of Jordan,º and all² the Israelitesº passed overºª on dry ground,º until²² all² the peopleº were passedºª cleanºª overºª² Jordan.º
