Abram Promised a Son

1 After° these° things° athe word° of the LORD° came° to Abram° in a vision°, saying°,
  “bDo not fear°, Abram°,
  I am ca shield° to you;
  IYour dreward° shall be very° great°.”
2 Abram° said°, “O Lord° IGOD°, what° will You give° me, since I IIam° childless°, and the IIIheir°° of my house° is Eliezer° of Damascus°?” 3 And Abram° said°, “ISince° You have given° no° IIoffspring° to me, IIIone° aborn° in my house° is my heir°.” 4 Then behold°, the word° of the LORD° came to him, saying°, “This° man will not be your heir°; abut one who° will come° forth° from your own Ibody°, he shall be your heir°.” 5 And He took° him outside° and said°, “Now° look° toward the heavens°, and acount° the stars°, if° you are able° to count° them.” And He said° to him, “bSo° shall your Idescendants° be.” 6 aThen he believed° in the LORD°; and He reckoned° it to him as righteousness°. 7 And He said° to him, “I am the LORD° who° brought° you out of aUr° of the Chaldeans°, to bgive° you this° land° to Ipossess° it.” 8 He said°, “O Lord° IGOD°, ahow° may I know° that I will IIpossess° it?” 9 So He said° to him, “IBring° Me a three° year° old° heifer°, and a three° year° old° female° goat°, and a three° year° old° ram°, and a turtledove°, and a young° pigeon°.” 10 Then he Ibrought° all° these° to Him and acut° them IIin two°, and laid° each° half° opposite° the other°; but he bdid not cut° the birds°. 11 The birds° of prey° came° down° upon the carcasses°, and Abram° drove° them away°.

12 ¶ Now when the sun° was going° down, aa deep° sleep° fell° upon Abram°; and behold°, Iterror° [and] great° darkness° fell° upon him. 13 [God] said° to Abram°, “Know° for certain° that ayour Idescendants° will be strangers° in a land° that is not theirs°, IIwhere bthey will be enslaved° and oppressed° cfour° hundred° years°. 14 But I will also° judge° the nation° whom° they will serve°, and afterward°° they will come° out awith Imany° possessions°. 15 As for you, ayou shall go° to your fathers° in peace°; you will be buried° at a good° old° age°. 16 Then in athe fourth° generation° they will return° here°, for bthe iniquity° of the Amorite° is not yet°° complete°.”

  “aTo your Idescendants° I have given° this° land°,
  From bthe river° of Egypt° as far° as the great° river°, the river° Euphrates°:
19 athe Kenite° and the Kenizzite° and the Kadmonite° 20 and the Hittite° and the Perizzite° and the Rephaim° 21 and the Amorite° and the Canaanite° and the Girgashite° and the Jebusite°.”

Abram complaineth for want of an heir.

and a vision.

12 And when the sunº was going down,ºª a deep sleepº fellºª upon² Abram;º and, lo,² an horrorº of greatº darknessº fellºª upon² him. 13 And he saidºª unto Abram,º Know¹ª of a suretyºª that² thy seedº shall be² a strangerº in a landº [that is] not² theirs, and shall serveºª them; and they shall afflictºª them fourº hundredº years;º 14 And also²² that nation,º whom² they shall serve,ºª will I² judge:ºª and afterwardºº shall they come outºª with greatº substance.º 15 And thou² shalt goºª to² thy fathersº in peace;º thou shalt be buriedºª in a goodº old age.º 16 But in the fourthº generationº they shall come hither¹ again:ºª² for² the iniquityº of the Amoritesº [is] not² yetº² full.º 17 And it came to pass,² that, when the sunº went down,ºª and it was² dark,º behold² a smokingº furnace,º and a burningº lampº that² passedºª betweenº those² pieces.º 18 In the sameº dayº the LORDº madeºª a covenantº with² Abram,º saying,ºª Unto thy seedº have I givenºª this²² land,º from the riverº² of Egyptº unto² the greatº river,º the riverº Euphrates:º 19 ² The Kenites,º and the Kenizzites,º and the Kadmonites,º 20 And the Hittites,º and the Perizzites,º and the Rephaims,º 21 And the Amorites,º and the Canaanites,º and the Girgashites,º and the Jebusites.º
