1 Now the LORD° spoke° to Moses°, saying°, 2 “Tell° the sons° of Israel° to turn° back° and camp° before° aPi-hahiroth°, between° bMigdol° and the sea°; you shall camp° in front° of Baal-zephon°, opposite° it, by the sea°. 3 For Pharaoh° will say° of the sons° of Israel°, ‘They are wandering° aimlessly° in the land°; the wilderness° has shut° them in.’ 4 Thus aI will Iharden° Pharaoh’s° heart°, and bhe will chase° after° them; and I will be honored° through Pharaoh° and all° his army°, and cthe Egyptians° will know° that I am the LORD°.” And they did° so°.

5 ¶ When the king° of Egypt° was told° that the people° had fled°, IPharaoh° and his servants° had° a change° of heart° toward° the people°, and they said°, “What° is this° we have done°, that we have let° Israel° go° from serving° us?” 6 So he made° his chariot° ready° and took° his people° with him; 7 and he took° six° hundred° select° chariots°, and all° the [other] chariots° of Egypt° with officers° over° all° of them. 8 aThe LORD° Ihardened° the heart° of Pharaoh°, king° of Egypt°, and he chased° after° the sons° of Israel° as the sons° of Israel° were going° out IIbboldly°°. 9 Then athe Egyptians° chased° after° them [with] all° the horses° [and] chariots° of Pharaoh°, his horsemen° and his army°, and they overtook° them camping° by the sea°, bbeside° Pi-hahiroth°, in front° of Baal-zephon°.

10 ¶ As Pharaoh° drew° near°, the sons° of Israel° Ilooked°°, and behold°, the Egyptians° were marching° after° them, and they became° very° frightened°; aso the sons° of Israel° cried° out to the LORD°. 11 Then athey said° to Moses°, “Is it because°° there° were no° graves° in Egypt° that you have taken° us away to die° in the wilderness°? Why° have you dealt° with us in this° way°, Ibringing° us out of Egypt°? 12 aIs this° not the word° that we spoke° to you in Egypt°, saying°, ‘ILeave° us alone° that we may serve° the Egyptians°’? For it would have been better° for us to serve° the Egyptians° than° to die° in the wilderness°.”

15 ¶ Then the LORD° said° to Moses°, “Why° are you crying° out to Me? Tell° the sons° of Israel° to go° forward°. 16 As for you, lift° up ayour staff° and stretch° out your hand° over° the sea° and divide° it, and the sons° of Israel° shall Igo° through° the midst° of the sea° on dry° land°. 17 As for Me, behold°, aI will Iharden° the hearts° of the Egyptians° so that they will go° in after° them; and I will be honored° through Pharaoh° and all° his army°, through his chariots° and his horsemen°. 18 aThen the Egyptians° will know° that I am the LORD°, when I am honored° through Pharaoh°, through his chariots° and his horsemen°.”

26 ¶ Then the LORD° said° to Moses°, “aStretch° out your hand° over° the sea° so that the waters° may come° back° over° the Egyptians°, over° their chariots° and their horsemen°.” 27 So Moses° stretched° out his hand° over° the sea°, and athe sea° returned° to its normal° state° at daybreak°, while the Egyptians° were fleeing° Iright° into it; then the LORD° IIboverthrew° the Egyptians° in the midst° of the sea°. 28 The waters° returned° and covered° the chariots° and the horsemen°, Ieven Pharaoh’s° entire° army° that had gone° into the sea° after° them; anot even° one° of them remained°. 29 But the sons° of Israel° walked° on adry° land° through the midst° of the sea°, and the waters° [were like] a wall° to them on their right° hand° and on their left°.

God instructeth the Israelites in their journey.

Pharaoh pursueth after them.

5 ¶ And it was toldºª the kingº of Egyptº that² the peopleº fled:ºª and the heartº of Pharaohº and of his servantsº was turnedºª against² the people,º and they said,ºª Why² have we doneºª this,² that² we have let² Israelº goºª from servingºª² us? 6 And he made readyºª² his chariot,º and tookºª his peopleº with² him: 7 And he tookºª sixº hundredº chosenºª chariots,º and all² the chariotsº of Egypt,º and captainsº over² every one² of them. 8 And the LORDº hardenedºª² the heartº of Pharaohº kingº of Egypt,º and he pursuedºª afterº the childrenº of Israel:º and the childrenº of Israelº went outºª with an highºª hand.º 9 But the Egyptiansº pursuedºª afterº them, all² the horsesº [and] chariotsº of Pharaoh,º and his horsemen,º and his army,º and overtookºª them encampingºª by² the sea,º beside² Pihahiroth,º beforeº Baalzephon.º

The Israelites murmur.

10 ¶ And when Pharaohº drew nigh,ºª the childrenº of Israelº lifted upºª² their eyes,º and, behold,² the Egyptiansº marchedºª afterº them; and they were soreº afraid:ºª and the childrenº of Israelº cried outºª unto² the LORD.º 11 And they saidºª unto² Moses,º Because²² [there were] no² gravesº in Egypt,º hast thou taken us awayºª to dieºª in the wilderness?º wherefore¹² hast thou dealtºª thus² with us, to carry us forthºª out of Egypt?º² 12 [Is] not² this² the wordº that² we did tellºª² thee in Egypt,º saying,ºª Let us alone,ºª² that we may serveºª² the Egyptians?º For² [it had been] betterº for us to serveºª² the Egyptians,º than that we should dieºª² in the wilderness.º

God instructeth Moses.

15 ¶ And the LORDº saidºª unto² Moses,º Wherefore² criestºª thou unto² me? speakºª unto² the childrenº of Israel,º that they go forward:ºª 16 But lift thou upºª²² thy rod,º and stretch outºª² thine handº over² the sea,º and divideºª it: and the childrenº of Israelº shall goºª on dryº [ground] through the midstº of the sea.º 17 And I,² behold,² I will hardenºª² the heartsº of the Egyptians,º and they shall followºª² them:¹ and I will get me honourºª upon Pharaoh,º and upon all² his host,º upon his chariots,º and upon his horsemen.º 18 And the Egyptiansº shall knowºª that² I² [am] the LORD,º when I have gotten me honourºª upon Pharaoh,º upon his chariots,º and upon his horsemen.º

The cloud removeth behind the camp.

19 ¶ And the angelº of God,º which wentºª beforeº the campº of Israel,º removedºª and went¹ª² behindº² them; and the pillarº of the cloudº wentºª from before their face,º² and stoodºª behindº² them: 20 And it cameºª between² the campº of the Egyptiansº and the campº of Israel;º and it was² a cloudº and darknessº [to them], but it gave lightºª² by nightº [to these]: so that the one² came not nearºª² the otherº all² the night.º

23 ¶ And the Egyptiansº pursued,ºª and went inºª afterº them to² the midstº of the sea,º [even] all² Pharaoh'sº horses,º his chariots,º and his horsemen.º 24 And it came to pass,² that in the morningº watchº the LORDº lookedºª unto² the hostº of the Egyptiansº through the pillarº of fireº and of the cloud,º and troubledºª² the hostº of the Egyptians,º 25 And took offºª² their chariotº wheels,º that they draveºª them heavily:º so that the Egyptiansº said,ºª Let us fleeºª from the faceº² of Israel;º for² the LORDº fightethºª for them against the Egyptians.º
