Defeat of Pharaoh Foretold

1 That which° came° as the word° of the LORD° to Jeremiah° the prophet° aconcerning° the nations°.

[1] aJr 1:10; 25:15-38

2 ¶ To aEgypt°, concerning° the army° of bPharaoh° Neco° king° of Egypt°, which° was by the Euphrates° River° at cCarchemish°, which° Nebuchadnezzar° king° of Babylon° defeated° in the dfourth° year° of Jehoiakim° the son° of Josiah°, king° of Judah°:
  3aLine° up the shield° and Ibuckler°,
  And draw° near° for the battle°!
  4 “Harness° the horses°,
  And Imount° the steeds°,
  And take° your stand° with helmets° [on]!
  aPolish° the spears°,
  Put° on the bscale-armor°!
  5 “Why° have I seen° [it]?
  They are terrified°,
  They are adrawing° back°,
  And their bmighty° men° are defeated°
  And have taken° refuge° in flight°,
  Without° facing° back°;
  IcTerror° is on every° side°!”
  Declares° the LORD°.
  6 Let not the aswift° man° flee°,
  Nor° the mighty° man° escape°;
  In the north° beside°° the river° Euphrates°
  They have bstumbled° and fallen°.
  7 Who° is this° that arises° like the Nile°,
  Like the rivers° whose waters° surge° about?
  8 Egypt° rises° like the Nile°,
  Even like the rivers° whose waters° surge° about;
  And He has said°, “I will arise° and cover° [that] land°;
  I will surely bdestroy° the city° and its inhabitants°.”
  9 Go° up, you horses°, and Iadrive° madly°, you chariots°,
  That the mighty° men° may IImarch° forward°:
  Ethiopia° and IIIbPut°, that handle° the shield°,
  And the IVcLydians°, that handle° [and] bend° the bow°.
  10 For athat day° belongs to the Lord° IGOD° of hosts°,
  A day° of bvengeance°, so as to avenge° Himself on His foes°;
  And the csword° will devour° and be satiated°
  And IIdrink° its fill° of their blood°;
  For there will be a dslaughter° for the Lord° IGOD° of hosts°,
  In the land° of the north° by the river° Euphrates°.
  11 Go° aup to Gilead° and obtain° balm°,
  bO virgin° daughter° of Egypt°!
  In vain° have you multiplied° Iremedies°;
  There° is cno° healing° for you.
  12 The nations° have heard° of your ashame°,
  And the earth° is full° of your bcry° [of distress];
  For one cwarrior° has stumbled° over Ianother°,
  And both° of them have fallen° down° together°.

and the conquest of Egypt by Nebuchadrezzar.

13 ¶ The wordº that² the LORDº spakeºª to² Jeremiahº the prophet,º how Nebuchadrezzarº kingº of Babylonº should comeºª [and] smiteºª² the landº of Egypt.º 14 Declareºª ye in Egypt,º and publishºª in Migdol,º and publishºª in Nophº and in Tahpanhes:º sayºª ye, Stand fast,ºª and prepareºª thee; for² the swordº shall devourºª round aboutº thee. 15 Why² are thy valiantº [men] swept away?ºª they stoodºª not,² because² the LORDº did driveºª them. 16 He made manyºª to fall,ºª yea,² oneº fellºª upon² another:º and they said,ºª Arise,ºª and let us go againºª to² our own people,º and to² the landº of our nativity,º fromº² the oppressingºª sword.º 17 They did cryºª there,² Pharaohº kingº of Egyptº [is but] a noise;º he hath passedºª the time appointed.º 18 [As] I² live,º saithºª the King,º whose nameº [is] the LORDº of hosts,º Surely² as Taborº [is] among the mountains,º and as Carmelº by the sea,º [so] shall he come.ºª 19 O thou daughterº dwellingºª in Egypt,º furnishºª² thyself to go into captivity:º¹ for² Nophº shall be² wasteº and desolateºª without²² an inhabitant.ºª 20 Egyptº [is like] a very fairº heifer,º [but] destructionº cometh;ºª it cometh² out¹ª of the north.º² 21 Also² her hired menº [are] in the midstº of her like fattedº bullocks;º for² they² also² are turned back,ºª [and] are fled awayºª together:º they did not² stand,ºª because² the dayº of their calamityº was comeºª upon² them, [and] the timeº of their visitation.º 22 The voiceº thereof shall go¹ª² like a serpent;º for² they shall march¹ª² with an army,º and comeºª against her with axes,º as hewersºª of wood.º 23 They shall cut downºª her forest,º saithºª the LORD,º though² it cannot² be searched;ºª because² they are moreºª than the grasshoppers,º² and [are] innumerable.ºº 24 The daughterº of Egyptº shall be confounded;ºª she shall be deliveredºª into the handº of the peopleº of the north.º 25 The LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel,º saith;ºª Behold,² I will punishºª² the multitudeº¹ª of No,º² and Pharaoh,º and Egypt,º with² their gods,º and their kings;º even Pharaoh,º and [all] them that trustºª in him: 26 And I will deliverºª them into the handº of those that seekºª their lives,º and into the handº of Nebuchadrezzarº kingº of Babylon,º and into the handº of his servants:º and afterwardº² it shall be inhabited,ºª as in the daysº of old,º saithºª the LORD.º
