Jesus, the Example

A Father’s Discipline

4 aYou have not yet° resisted° Ibto the point° of shedding blood° in your striving° against° sin°; 5 and you have forgotten° the exhortation° which° is addressed° to you as sons°,
  “aMY SON°, DO NOT REGARD° LIGHTLY° THE DISCIPLINE° OF THE LORD°,
  NOR° bFAINT° WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED° BY HIM;
  6 aFOR THOSE bWHOM° THE LORD° LOVES° HE DISCIPLINES°,
  AND HE SCOURGES° EVERY° SON° WHOM° HE RECEIVES°.”
7 It is for discipline° that you endure°; aGod° deals° with you as with sons°; for what° son° is there whom° [his] father° does not discipline°? 8 But if° you are without° discipline°, aof which° all° have become° partakers°, then° you are illegitimate° children° and not sons°. 9 Furthermore°, we had° Iearthly° fathers° to discipline° us, and we arespected° them; shall we not much° rather° be subject° to bthe Father° of IIspirits°, and clive°? 10 For they disciplined° us for a short° time° as seemed° best° to them, but He [disciplines us] for [our] good°, aso° that we may share° His holiness°. 11 All° discipline° afor the moment° seems° not to be joyful°, but sorrowful°; yet° to those° who have been trained° by it, afterwards° it yields° the bpeaceful° fruit° of righteousness°.

An exhortation to constant faith, patience, and godliness.

1 ¶ Whereforeº seeing we² alsoº are¹ª compassed aboutºª¹ with² so greatº a cloudº of witnesses,º let¹ª us¹ lay asideºª everyº weight,º andº the sinº which doth so easily besetº [us], and² let us runºª withº patienceº the² raceº that is set beforeºª us,º 2 Lookingºª untoº Jesusº the² authorº andº finisherº of [our] faith;º whoº forº the² joyº that was set beforeºª him¹² enduredºª the cross,º despisingºª the shame,º andº is set downºª atº the right handº of the² throneº of God.º 3 Forº considerºª him that enduredºª suchº contradictionº ofº sinnersº againstº himself,¹² lestº ye be weariedºª and faintºª in yourº minds.º 4 Ye have¹ª not yetº resistedºª untoº blood,º strivingºª againstº sin.º 5 Andº ye have forgottenºª the² exhortationº whichº speakethºª unto youº asº unto children,º Myº son,º despiseºª notº thou¹ª the chasteningº of the Lord,º norº faintºª when thou art rebukedºª ofº him:º 6 Forº whomº the Lordº lovethºª he chasteneth,ºª andº scourgethºª everyº sonº whomº he receiveth.ºª 7 Ifº ye endureºª chastening,º Godº dealethºª with youº asº with sons;º forº whatº sonº is² he¹ª whomº the fatherº chastenethºª not?º 8 Butº ifº ye beºª withoutº chastisement,º whereofº allº areºª partakers,º thenº are² ye¹ª bastards,º andº notº sons.º 9 Furthermoreº¹ we have hadºª fathersº of ourº fleshº which correctedº [us], andº we gave [them] reverence:ºª shall we¹ª notº muchº ratherº be in subjectionºª unto the² Fatherº of spirits,º andº live?ºª 10 Forº they² verilyº forº a fewº daysº chastenedºª [us] afterº their own¹² pleasure;ºª butº he² forº [our] profit,ºª that¹ [we] might be partakersºª of hisº holiness.º 11 Nowº noºº chasteningº forº¹ the² presentºª seemethºª to beºª joyous,º butº grievous:º neverthelessº afterwardº it yieldethºª the peaceableº fruitº of righteousnessº unto them which are exercisedºª thereby.ºº 12 Whereforeº lift upºª the handsº which² hang down,ºª andº the² feebleºª knees;º 13 Andº makeºª straightº pathsº for yourº feet,º lest² that¹ which is lameº be turned out of the way;ºª butº let it¹ª ratherº be healed.ºª 14 Followºª peaceº withº allº [men], andº holiness,º withoutº whichº no manº shall seeºª the² Lord:º 15 Looking diligentlyºª lestº any manº failºª ofº the² graceº of God;º lestº anyº rootº of bitternessº springingºª upº troubleºª [you], andº therebyºº manyº be defiled;ºª 16 Lestº there [be] anyº fornicator,º orº profane person,º asº Esau,º whoº forº oneº morsel of meatº soldºª his¹² birthright.º 17 Forº ye knowºª how¹ that² afterward,º¹ when he wouldºª have inheritedºª the² blessing,º he was rejected:ºª forº he foundºª noº placeº of repentance,º thoughº he sought¹ª it¹ carefullyºª² withº tears.º 18 Forº ye are¹ª notº comeºª unto the mountº that might be touched,ºª andº that burnedºª with fire,º norº unto blackness,º andº darkness,º andº tempest,º 19 Andº the soundº of a trumpet,º andº the voiceº of words;º whichº [voice] they that heardºª intreatedºª that the wordº should¹ª notºª be spoken¹ª to them¹ any more:¹²² 20 (Forº they could¹ª notº endureºª that which was commanded,ºª And if so much asº a beastº touchºª the² mountain,º it shall be stoned,ºª or¹ thrust throughºª with a dart:º 21 Andº soº terribleº wasºª the² sight,ºª [that] Mosesº said,ºª I exceedingly fearººª andº quake:)º
