1 aIn the third° month° after the sons° of Israel° had gone° out of the land° of Egypt°, Ion that very day° they came° into the wilderness° of bSinai°. 2 When they set° out from aRephidim°, they came° to the wilderness° of Sinai° and camped° in the wilderness°; and there° Israel° camped° in front° of bthe mountain°. 3 Moses° went° up to God°, and athe LORD° called° to him from the mountain°, saying°, “Thus° you shall say° to the house° of Jacob° and tell° the sons° of Israel°: 4aYou yourselves° have seen° what° I did° to the Egyptians°, and [how] I bore° you on beagles’° wings°, and brought° you to Myself. 5 Now° then, aif° you will indeed° obey° My voice° and bkeep° My covenant°, then you shall be cMy Iown possession° among° all° the peoples°, for dall° the earth° is Mine; 6 and you shall be to Me aa kingdom° of priests° and ba holy° nation°.’ These° are the words° that you shall speak° to the sons° of Israel°.”

7aSo Moses° came° and called° the elders° of the people°, and set° before° them all° these° words° which° the LORD° had commanded° him. 8 aAll° the people° answered° together° and said°, “All° that the LORD° has spoken° we will do°!” And Moses° brought° back° the words° of the people° to the LORD°. 9 The LORD° said° to Moses°, “Behold°, I will come° to you in aa thick° cloud°, so° that the bpeople° may hear° when I speak° with you and may also° believe° in you forever°.” Then Moses° told° the words° of the people° to the LORD°.

10 ¶ The LORD° also said° to Moses°, “Go° to the people° and aconsecrate° them today° and tomorrow°, and let them bwash° their garments°; 11 and let them be ready° for the third° day°, for on athe third° day° the LORD° will come° down° on Mount° Sinai° in the sight° of all° the people°. 12 You shall set° bounds° for the people° all° around°, saying°, ‘IBeware° that you do not go° up on the mountain° or touch° the border° of it; awhoever° touches° the mountain° shall surely° be put° to death°. 13 No° hand° shall touch° him, but ahe shall surely° be stoned° or° Ishot° through°; whether° beast° or° man°, he shall not live°.’ When the ram’s° horn° sounds° a long° blast°, they shall come° up to bthe mountain°.” 14 So Moses° went° down° from the mountain° to the people° and consecrated° the people°, and they washed° their garments°. 15 He said° to the people°, “Be ready° for the third° day°; do not go° near° a woman°.”

16aSo it came° about on the third° day°, when it was morning°, that there were Ithunder° and lightning° flashes° and a thick° cloud° upon the mountain° and a very° loud° trumpet° sound°, so that all° the people° who° [were] in the camp° trembled°. 17 And Moses° brought° the people° out of the camp° to meet° God°, and they stood° at the Ifoot° of the mountain°.

The LORD Visits Sinai

18 aNow Mount° Sinai° [was] all° in smoke° because°°° the LORD° descended° upon it bin fire°; and its smoke° ascended° like cthe smoke° of a furnace°, and dthe whole° mountain° Iquaked° violently°. 19 When the sound° of the trumpet° grew° louder° and louder°, Moses° spoke° and aGod° answered° him with Ithunder°. 20 aThe LORD° came° down° on Mount° Sinai°, to the top° of the mountain°; and the LORD° called° Moses° to the top° of the mountain°, and Moses° went° up. 21 Then the LORD° spoke° to Moses°, “Go° down°, Iwarn° the people°, so° that athey do not break° through° to the LORD° to gaze°, and many° of them IIperish°. 22 Also° let the apriests° who come° near° to the LORD° consecrate° themselves, or° else° the LORD° will break° out against them.” 23 Moses° said° to the LORD°, “The people° cannot°° come° up to Mount° Sinai°, for You Iwarned° us, saying°, ‘aSet° bounds° about the mountain° and consecrate° it.’” 24 Then the LORD° said° to him, “IGo°° down° and come° up [again], ayou and Aaron° with you; but do not let the bpriests° and the people° break° through° to come° up to the LORD°, or° He will break° forth° upon them.” 25 So Moses° went° down° to the people° and told° them.

The people come to Sinai.

1 ¶ In the thirdº month,º when the childrenº of Israelº were gone forthºª out of the landº² of Egypt,º the same² dayº cameºª they [into] the wildernessº of Sinai.º 2 For they were departedºª from Rephidim,º² and were comeºª [to] the desertº of Sinai,º and had pitchedºª in the wilderness;º and there² Israelº campedºª before² the mount.º

God's message by Moses unto the people out of the mount.

3 And Mosesº went upºª unto² God,º and the LORDº calledºª unto² him out of² the mountain,º saying,ºª Thus² shalt thou sayºª to the houseº of Jacob,º and tellºª the childrenº of Israel;º 4 Ye² have seenºª what² I didºª unto the Egyptians,º and [how] I bareºª you on² eagles'º wings,º and broughtºª you unto² myself. 5 Now² therefore, if² ye will obey¹ª my voice¹ indeed,ºª² and keepºª² my covenant,º then ye shall be² a peculiar treasureº unto me above all²² people:º for² all² the earthº [is] mine: 6 And ye² shall be² unto me a kingdomº of priests,º and an holyº nation.º These² [are] the wordsº which² thou shalt speakºª unto² the childrenº of Israel.º

7 ¶ And Mosesº cameºª and calledºª for the eldersº of the people,º and laidºª before their facesº² all² these² wordsº which² the LORDº commandedºª him.

8 And all² the peopleº answeredºª together,º and said,ºª All² that² the LORDº hath spokenºª we will do.ºª And Mosesº returnedºª² the wordsº of the peopleº unto² the LORD.º 9 And the LORDº saidºª unto² Moses,º Lo,² I² comeºª unto² thee in a thickº cloud,º that² the peopleº may hearºª when I speakºª with² thee, and believeºª thee for ever.º And Mosesº toldºª² the wordsº of the peopleº unto² the LORD.º

The people are prepared against the third day.

10 ¶ And the LORDº saidºª unto² Moses,º Go¹ª² unto² the people,º and sanctifyºª them to dayº and to morrow,º and let them washºª their clothes,º 11 And be² readyºª against the thirdº day:º for² the thirdº dayº the LORDº will come downºª in the sightº of all² the peopleº upon² mountº Sinai.º

The mountain must not be touched.

12 And thou shalt set boundsºª² unto the peopleº round about,º saying,ºª Take heedºª to yourselves, [that ye] go [not] upºª into the mount,º or touchºª the borderº of it: whosoever² touchethºª the mountº shall be surely¹ª put to death:ºª 13 There shall not² an handº touchºª it, but² he shall surely¹ª be stoned,ºª orº shot¹ª through;ºª whether² [it be] beastº orº man,º it shall not² live:ºª when the trumpetº soundeth long,ºª they² shall come upºª to the mount.º

The fearful presence of God upon the mount.

16 ¶ And it came to pass² on the thirdº dayº in the morning,º that there were² thundersº and lightnings,º and a thickº cloudº upon² the mount,º and the voiceº of the trumpetº exceedingº loud;º so that all² the peopleº that² [was] in the campº trembled.ºª 17 And Mosesº brought forthºª² the peopleº out of² the campº to meetºª with God;º and they stoodºª at the nether¹ part² of the mount.º 18 And mountº Sinaiº was altogether² on a smoke,ºª becauseºº² the LORDº descendedºª upon² it in fire:º and the smokeº thereof ascendedºª as the smokeº of a furnace,º and the whole² mountº quakedºª greatly.º 19 And when² the voiceº of the trumpetº sounded¹ long,ºª and waxed louder¹ and louder,º² Mosesº spake,ºª and Godº answeredºª him by a voice.º 20 And the LORDº came downºª upon² mountº Sinai,º on² the topº of the mount:º and the LORDº calledºª Mosesº [up] toº the topº of the mount;º and Mosesº went up.ºª 21 And the LORDº saidºª unto² Moses,º Go down,ºª chargeºª the people,º lest² they break throughºª unto² the LORDº to gaze,ºª and manyº of² them perish.ºª 22 And let the priestsº also,² which come nearºª to² the LORD,º sanctify¹ª themselves,² lest² the LORDº break forthºª upon them. 23 And Mosesº saidºª unto² the LORD,º The peopleº cannotºª² come upºª to² mountº Sinai:º for² thou² chargedstºª us, saying,ºª Set boundsºª² about the mount,º and sanctifyºª it. 24 And the LORDº saidºª unto² him, Away,¹ª² get thee down,ºª and thou shalt come up,ºª thou,² and Aaronº with² thee: but let not² the priestsº and the peopleº break throughºª to come upºª unto² the LORD,º lest² he break forthºª upon them. 25 So Mosesº went downºª unto² the people,º and spakeºª unto² them.
