  2 ¶ A ajealous° and avenging° God° is the LORD°;
  The LORD° is bavenging° and Iwrathful°°.
  The LORD° takes° cvengeance° on His adversaries°,
  And He reserves° wrath° for His enemies°.
  3 The LORD° is aslow° to anger° and great° in power°,
  And the LORD° will by no° means° leave° [the guilty] unpunished°.
  In bwhirlwind° and storm° is His way°,
  And cclouds° are the dust° beneath His feet°.
  4 He arebukes° the sea° and makes° it dry°;
  He dries° up all° the rivers°.
  bBashan° and Carmel° wither°;
  The blossoms° of Lebanon° wither°.
  5 Mountains° aquake° because° of Him
  And the hills° bdissolve°;
  Indeed the earth° is cupheaved° by His presence°,
  The dworld° and all° the inhabitants° in it.
  6 aWho° can stand° before° His indignation°?
  Who° can endure° the bburning° of His anger°?
  His cwrath° is poured° out like fire°
  And the drocks° are broken° up by Him.
  7 The LORD° is agood°,
  A stronghold° in the day° of trouble°,
  And bHe knows° those who take° refuge° in Him.
  8 But with an aoverflowing° flood°
  He will make° a complete° end° of Iits site°,
  And will pursue° His enemies° into bdarkness°.

The majesty of God in goodness to his people, and severity against his enemies.

1 ¶ The burdenº of Nineveh.º The bookº of the visionº of Nahumº the Elkoshite.º 2 Godº [is] jealous,º and the LORDº revengeth;ºª the LORDº revengeth,ºª and [is] furious;ºº the LORDº will take vengeanceºª on his adversaries,º and he² reservethºª [wrath] for his enemies.ºª 3 The LORDº [is] slowº to anger,º and greatº in power,º and will not at all¹ª acquitºª² [the wicked]: the LORDº hath his wayº in the whirlwindº and in the storm,º and the cloudsº [are] the dustº of his feet.º 4 He rebukethºª the sea,º and maketh it dry,¹ª² and drieth up¹ª² all² the rivers:º Bashanº languisheth,ºª and Carmel,º and the flowerº of Lebanonº languisheth.ºª 5 The mountainsº quakeºª at² him, and the hillsº melt,ºª and the earthº is burnedºª at his presence,º² yea, the world,º and all² that dwellºª therein. 6 Who² can standºª beforeº his indignation?º and who² can abideºª in the fiercenessº of his anger?º his furyº is poured outºª like fire,º and the rocksº are thrown downºª by² him. 7 The LORDº [is] good,º a strong holdº in the dayº of trouble;º and he knowethºª them that trustºª in him. 8 But with an overrunningºª floodº he will makeºª an utter endº of the placeº thereof, and darknessº shall pursueºª his enemies.ºª 9 What² do ye imagineºª against² the LORD?º he² will makeºª an utter end:º afflictionº shall not² rise upºª the second time.º 10 For² while² [they be] folden togetherºª [as] thorns,º and while they are drunken¹ª² [as] drunkards,¹² they shall be devouredºª as stubbleº fully¹² dry.º 11 There is [one] come outºª of² thee, that imaginethºª evilº against² the LORD,º a wickedº counsellor.ºª 12 Thus² saithºª the LORD;º Though² [they be] quiet,º and likewise² many,º yet thus² shall they be cut down,ºª when he shall pass through.ºª Though I have afflictedºª thee, I will afflictºª thee no² more.² 13 For now² will I breakºª his yokeº from off²² thee, and will burst¹ª thy bonds¹ in sunder.ºª² 14 And the LORDº hath given a commandmentºª concerning² thee, [that] no² more² of thy nameº² be sown:ºª out of the houseº² of thy godsº will I cut offºª the graven imageº and the molten image:º I will makeºª thy grave;º for² thou art vile.ºª 15 Behold² upon² the mountainsº the feetº of him that bringeth good tidings,ºª that publishethºª peace!º O Judah,º keepºª thy solemn feasts,º performºª thy vows:º for² the wickedº shall no² moreºª² pass throughºª thee; he is utterly² cut off.ºª
