Babylon’s Idols and the True God

  1 aBel° has bowed° down°, Nebo° stoops° over°;
  Their images° are [consigned] to the beasts° and the cattle°.
  The things° Ithat you carry° are burdensome°,
  A load° for the weary° [beast].
  2 They stooped° over°, they have bowed° down° together°;
  They could° not rescue° the burden°,
  But Ihave themselves° agone° into captivity°.

  7 “They alift° it upon the shoulder° [and] carry° it;
  They set° it in its place° and it stands° [there].
  bIt does not move° from its place°.
  Though° one may cry° to it, it ccannot° answer°;
  It dcannot° deliver° him from his distress°.

The idols of Babylon could not save themselves.

1 ¶ Belº boweth down,ºª Neboº stoopeth,ºª their idolsº were² upon the beasts,º and upon the cattle:º your carriagesº [were] heavy loaden;ºª [they are] a burdenº to the wearyº [beast]. 2 They stoop,ºª they bow downºª together;º they couldºª not² deliverºª the burden,º but themselvesº are goneºª into captivity.º

3 ¶ Hearkenºª unto² me, O houseº of Jacob,º and all² the remnantº of the houseº of Israel,º which are borneºª [by me] from² the belly,º which are carriedºª from² the womb:º 4 And [even] to² [your] old ageº I² [am] he;² and [even] to² hoar hairsº will I² carryºª [you]: I² have made,ºª and I² will bear;ºª even I² will carry,ºª and will deliverºª [you].

Idols are not comparable to God for power,

5 ¶ To whom² will ye likenºª me, and make [me] equal,ºª and compareºª me, that we may be like?ºª 6 They lavishºª goldº out of the bag,º² and weighºª silverº in the balance,º [and] hireºª a goldsmith;ºª and he makethºª it a god:º they fall down,ºª yea,² they worship.ºª 7 They bearºª him upon² the shoulder,º they carryºª him, and set² him in his place,¹ª² and he standeth;ºª from his placeº² shall he not² remove:ºª yea,² [one] shall cryºª unto² him, yet can he not² answer,ºª nor² saveºª him out of his trouble.º² 8 Rememberºª this,² and shew yourselves men:ºª bring [it] againºª to² mind,º O ye transgressors.ºª 9 Rememberºª the former thingsº of old:º² for² I² [am] God,º and [there is] none² else;² [I am] God,º and [there is] noneº like¹ me,² 10 Declaringºª the endº from the beginning,º² and from ancient timesº² [the things] that² are not² [yet] done,ºª saying,ºª My counselº shall stand,ºª and I will doºª all² my pleasure:º 11 Callingºª a ravenous birdº from the east,º² the manº that executeth my counselº from a farº country:º² yea,² I have spokenºª [it], I will also² bring¹ª it to pass;² I have purposedºª [it], I will also² doºª it.
