Job Says There Is No Arbitrator between God and Man

1 Then Job° Ianswered°,
  2 “In truth° I know° that this is so°;
  But how° can a aman° be in the right° Ibefore° God°?
  3 “If° one wished° to adispute° with Him,
  He could not answer° Him once° in a thousand° [times].
  4aWise° in heart° and bmighty° in strength°,
  Who° has Icdefied°° Him IIwithout° harm°?
  5a[It is God] who removes° the mountains°, they know° not [how],
  When° He overturns° them in His anger°;
  6 Who ashakes° the earth° out of its place°,
  And its bpillars° tremble°;
  7 Who commands° the asun° Inot to shine°,
  And sets° a seal° upon the stars°;
  8 Who alone° astretches° out the heavens°
  And Ibtramples° down° the waves° of the sea°;
  9 Who makes° the aBear°, Orion° and the Pleiades°,
  And the bchambers° of the south°;
  10 Who adoes° great° things°, Iunfathomable°°°,
  And wondrous° works° without°° number°.
  11 “Were He to pass° by me, aI would not see° Him;
  Were He to move° past° [me], I would not perceive° Him.
  12 “Were He to snatch° away°, who° could arestrain° Him?
  Who° could say° to Him, ‘bWhat° are You doing°?’

Job, acknowledging God's justice, sheweth there is no contending with him.

1 ¶ Then Jobº answeredºª and said,ºª 2 I knowºª [it is] so²² of a truth:º but how² should manº be justºª with² God?º 3 If² he willºª contendºª with² him, he cannot² answerºª him oneº of² a thousand.º 4 [He is] wiseº in heart,º and mightyº in strength:º who² hath hardenedºª [himself] against² him, and hath prospered?ºª 5 Which removethºª the mountains,º and they knowºª not:² which² overturnethºª them in his anger.º 6 Which shakethºª the earthº out of her place,º² and the pillarsº thereof tremble.ºª 7 Which commandethºª the sun,º and it risethºª not;² and sealeth upºª the stars.º 8 Which alone² spreadeth outºª the heavens,º and treadethºª upon² the wavesº of the sea.º 9 Which makethºª Arcturus,º Orion,º and Pleiades,º and the chambersº of the south.º 10 Which doethºª great thingsº pastº² finding out;º yea, and wondersºª without²² number.º 11 Lo,² he goethºª by² me, and I seeºª [him] not:² he passeth onºª also, but I perceiveºª him not.² 12 Behold,² he taketh away,ºª who² can hinderºª him? who² will sayºª unto² him, What² doestºª thou? 13 [If] Godº will not² withdrawºª his anger,º the proud¹² helpersºª do stoopºª under² him. 14 How much less²² shall I² answerºª him, [and] choose outºª my wordsº [to reason] with² him? 15 Whom,² though² I were righteous,ºª [yet] would I not² answer,ºª [but] I would make supplicationºª to my judge.ºª 16 If² I had called,ºª and he had answeredºª me; [yet] would I not² believeºª that² he had hearkenedºª unto my voice.º 17 For² he breakethºª me with a tempest,º and multipliethºª my woundsº without cause.º 18 He will not² sufferºª me to takeºª my breath,º but² fillethºª me with bitterness.º 19 If² [I speak] of strength,º lo,² [he is] strong:º and if² of judgment,º who² shall set¹ª me a time² [to plead]? 20 If² I justifyºª myself, mine own mouthº shall condemnºª me: [if I say], I² [am] perfect,º it shall also prove me perverse.ºª 21 [Though] I² [were] perfect,º [yet] would I not² knowºª my soul:º I would despiseºª my life.º

Man's innocency is not to be condemned by afflictions.
