2“So when you Igive to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they amay be honored by men. bTruly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 3 But when you Igive to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your Igiving will be in secret; and ayour Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you.

The Cure for Anxiety

25aFor this reason I say to you, Ido not be bworried about your IIlife, [as to] what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, [as to] what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 aLook at the birds of the Iair, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and [yet] your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And who of you by being aworried can badd a [single] Ihour to his IIlife? 28 And why are you aworried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, 29 yet I say to you that not even aSolomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the agrass of the field, which is [alive] today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, [will He] not much more [clothe] you? bYou of little faith! 31 Do not aworry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for ayour heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But Iseek first IIHis kingdom and His righteousness, and aall these things will be IIIadded to you.

Christ continueth his sermon in the mount, speaking of alms,

1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2 Therefore when thou doest [thine] alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

prayer,

5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites [are]: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen [do]: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
