1 On the twenty-first°° of the seventh° month°, the word° of the LORD° came° by aHaggai° the prophet° saying°, 2 “Speak° now° to aZerubbabel° the son° of Shealtiel°, agovernor° of Judah°, and to aJoshua° the son° of Jehozadak°, the high° priest°, and to the bremnant° of the people° saying°, 3 ‘Who° is aleft° among you who° saw° this° Itemple° in its bformer° glory°? And how° do you see° it now°? Does it not IIseem° to you like nothing° IIIin comparison°? 4 But now° Iatake° courage°, Zerubbabel°,’ declares° the LORD°, ‘take° courage° also, Joshua° son° of Jehozadak°, the high° priest°, and all° you people° of the land° take° courage°,’ declares° the LORD°, ‘and work°; for bI am with you,’ declares° the LORD° of hosts°. 5 ‘As for the Iapromise° which° I IImade° you when you came° out of Egypt°, IIIMy bSpirit° is abiding° in your midst°; cdo not fear°!’ 6 For thus° says° the LORD° of hosts°, ‘aOnce° more° Iin a blittle° while°, I am going to cshake° the heavens° and the earth°, the sea° also and the dry° land°. 7 I will shake° aall° the nations°; and Ithey will come° with the bwealth° of all° nations°, and I will cfill° this° house° with glory°,’ says° the LORD° of hosts°. 8 ‘The asilver° is Mine and the gold° is Mine,’ declares° the LORD° of hosts°. 9 ‘The latter° aglory° of this° house° will be greater° than° the bformer°,’ says° the LORD° of hosts°, ‘and in this° place° I will give° cpeace°,’ declares° the LORD° of hosts°.”

10 ¶ On the atwenty-fourth°° of the ninth° [month], in the second° year° of Darius°, the word° of the LORD° came° to Haggai° the prophet°, saying°, 11 “Thus° says° the LORD° of hosts°, ‘aAsk° now° the priests° [for] a Iruling°: 12 If° a man° carries° aholy° meat° in the Ifold° of his garment°, and touches° bread° with IIthis fold°, or cooked° food°, wine°, oil°, or any° [other] food°, will it become° holy°?’” And the priests° answered°, “No°.” 13 Then Haggai° said°, “aIf° one who is unclean° from a Icorpse° touches° any° of these°, will [the latter] become° unclean°?” And the priests° answered°, “It will become° unclean°.” 14 Then Haggai° said°, “ ‘aSo° is this° people°. And so° is this° nation° before° Me,’ declares° the LORD°, ‘and so° is every° work° of their hands°; and what° they offer° there° is unclean°. 15 But now°, do Iaconsider°° from this° day° IIonward°: before°° one bstone° was placed° on another° in the temple° of the LORD°, 16 Ifrom that time° [when] one came° to a [grain] heap° of twenty° [measures], there would be only ten°; and [when] one came° to the wine° vat° to draw° fifty° IImeasures°, there would be [only] twenty°. 17 I smote° you [and] every° work° of your hands° with ablasting° wind°, mildew° and hail°; Iyet you [did] not [come back] to Me,’ declares° the LORD°. 18 ‘Do Iaconsider°° from this° day° IIonward°, from the btwenty-fourth°° day° of the ninth° [month]; from the day° when° the temple° of the LORD° was cfounded°, Iconsider°°: 19 Is the seed° still° in the barn°? Even° including° the vine°, the fig° tree°, the pomegranate° and the olive° tree°, it has not borne° [fruit]. Yet from this° day° on I will abless° [you].’”

20 ¶ Then the word° of the LORD° came° a second° time° to Haggai° on the atwenty-fourth°° [day] of the month°, saying°, 21 “Speak° to aZerubbabel° governor° of Judah°, saying°, ‘I am going to bshake° the heavens° and the earth°. 22 I will aoverthrow° the thrones° of kingdoms° and destroy° the bpower° of the kingdoms° of the Inations°; and I will coverthrow° the chariots° and their riders°, and the dhorses° and their riders° will go° down°, eeveryone° by the sword° of another°.’ 23 ‘On that day°,’ declares° the LORD° of hosts°, ‘I will take° you, Zerubbabel°, son° of Shealtiel°, My servant°,’ declares° the LORD°, ‘and I will make° you like a Iasignet° [ring], for bI have chosen° you,’” declares° the LORD° of hosts°.

He encourageth the people to the work, by promise of greater glory to the second Temple than was in the first.

In the type of holy things and unclean, he sheweth their sins hindered the work.

10 ¶ In the fourº and twentiethº [day] of the ninthº [month], in the secondº yearº of Darius,º came² the wordº of the LORDº by¹² Haggaiº the prophet,º saying,ºª 11 Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts;º Askºª now²² the priestsº [concerning] the law,º saying,ºª 12 If² oneº bearºª holyº fleshº in the skirtº of his garment,º and with his skirtº do touchºª² bread,º or pottage,º or wine,º or oil,º or any² meat,º shall it be holy?ºª And the priestsº answeredºª and said,ºª No.² 13 Then saidºª Haggai,º If² [one that is] uncleanº by a dead bodyº touchºª any² of these,² shall it be unclean?ºª And the priestsº answeredºª and said,ºª It shall be unclean.ºª 14 Then answeredºª Haggai,º and said,ºª So² [is] this² people,º and so² [is] this² nationº beforeº me, saithºª the LORD;º and so² [is] every² workº of their hands;º and that which² they offerºª there² [is] unclean.º 15 And now,² I pray you,² considerººª from² this² dayº and upward,º from beforeº² a stoneº was laidºª upon² a stoneº in the templeº of the LORD:º 16 Since those [days] were,²² when [one] cameºª to² an heapº of twentyº [measures], there were² [but] ten:º when [one] cameºª to² the pressfatº for to draw outºª fiftyº [vessels] out of the press,º there were² [but] twenty.º 17 I smoteºª you with blastingº and with mildewº and with hailº in² all² the laboursº of your hands;º yet ye [turned] not² to² me, saithºª the LORD.º 18 Considerººª now² from² this² dayº and upward,º from the fourº and twentiethº dayº² of the ninthº [month, even] from² the dayº that² the foundation¹ª of the LORD'S¹ temple¹ was laid,²²² considerººª [it]. 19 Is the seedº yet² in the barn?º yea, as yet² the vine,º and the fig tree,º and the pomegranate,º and the oliveº tree,º hath not² brought forth:ºª from² this² dayº will I blessºª [you].

God's promise to Zerubbabel.

20 ¶ And againº the wordº of the LORDº came² unto² Haggaiº in the fourº and twentiethº [day] of the month,º saying,ºª 21 Speakºª to² Zerubbabel,º governorº of Judah,º saying,ºª I² will shakeºª² the heavensº and the earth;º 22 And I will overthrowºª the throneº of kingdoms,º and I will destroyºª the strengthº of the kingdomsº of the heathen;º and I will overthrowºª the chariots,º and those that rideºª in them; and the horsesº and their ridersºª shall come down,ºª every oneº by the swordº of his brother.º 23 In that² day,º saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º will I takeºª thee, O Zerubbabel,º my servant,º the sonº of Shealtiel,º saithºª the LORD,º and will makeºª thee as a signet:º for² I have chosenºª thee, saithºª the LORDº of hosts.º
