NASB — Matthew 12 — KJV

Sabbath Questions

1 aAt that Itime Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples became hungry and began to bpick the heads [of grain] and eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw [this], they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples do what ais not lawful to do on a Sabbath.” 3 But He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he became hungry, he and his companions, 4 how he entered the house of God, and athey ate the Iconsecrated bread, which was not lawful for him to eat nor for those with him, but for the priests alone? 5 Or have you not read in the Law, that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple Ibreak the Sabbath and are innocent? 6 But I say to you that something agreater than the temple is here. 7 But if you had known what this Imeans, ‘aI DESIRE IICOMPASSION, AND NOT A SACRIFICE,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.

9aDeparting from there, He went into their synagogue. 10 And a man [was there] whose hand was withered. And they questioned IJesus, asking, “aIs it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”—so that they might accuse Him. 11 And He said to them, aWhat man Iis there among you who IIhas a sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 aHow much more valuable then is a man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do Igood on the Sabbath.” 13 Then He *said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!” aHe stretched it out, and it was restored to Inormal, like the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and Iaconspired against Him, [as to] how they might destroy Him.

The Desire for Signs

38 ¶ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, awe want to see a Isign from You.” 39 But He answered and said to them, aAn evil and adulterous generation craves for a Isign; and [yet] no Isign will be given to it but the Isign of Jonah the prophet; 40 for just as aJONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will bthe Son of Man be cthree days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 aThe men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because bthey repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, csomething greater than Jonah is here. 42 a[The] Queen of [the] South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, bsomething greater than Solomon is here.

Christ reproveth the blindness of the Pharisees concerning the breach of the Sabbath,

1 ¶ At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw [it], they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.

He rebuketh the unfaithful, who seek after a sign:

38 ¶ Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. 39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas [is] here. 42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon [is] here. 43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth [it] empty, swept, and garnished. 45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last [state] of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
