The Offering of Isaac

1 Now it came° about after° these° things°, that aGod° tested° Abraham°, and said° to him, “bAbraham°!” And he said°, “Here° I am.” 2 He said°, “Take° now° ayour son°, your only° son, whom° you love°, Isaac°, and go° to the land° of bMoriah°, and offer° him there° as a cburnt° offering° on one° of the mountains° of which° I will tell° you.” 3 So Abraham° rose° early° in the morning° and saddled° his donkey°, and took° two° of his young° men° with him and Isaac° his son°; and he split° wood° for the burnt° offering°, and arose° and went° to the place° of which° God° had told° him. 4 On the third° day° Abraham° raised° his eyes° and saw° the place° from a distance°. 5 Abraham° said° to his young° men°, “Stay° here° with the donkey°, and I and the lad° will go° over°° there°°; and we will worship° and return° to you.” 6 Abraham° took° the wood° of the burnt° offering° and alaid° it on Isaac° his son°, and he took° in his hand° the fire° and the knife°. So the two° of them walked° on together°. 7 Isaac° spoke° to Abraham° his father° and said°, “My father°!” And he said°, “Here° I am, my son°.” And he said°, “Behold°, the fire° and the wood°, but where° is the alamb° for the burnt° offering°?” 8 Abraham° said°, “God° will Iprovide° for Himself the lamb° for the burnt° offering°, my son°.” So the two° of them walked° on together°.

9 ¶ Then they came° to athe place° of which° God° had told° him; and Abraham° built° bthe altar° there° and arranged° the wood°, and bound° his son° Isaac° and claid° him on the altar°, on top° of the wood°. 10 Abraham° stretched° out his hand° and took° the knife° to slay° his son°. 11 But athe angel° of the LORD° called° to him from heaven° and said°, “Abraham°, Abraham°!” And he said°, “Here° I am.” 12 He said°, “Do not stretch° out your hand° against° the lad°, and do° nothing°° to him; for now° aI know° that you Ifear° God°, since you have not withheld° byour son°, your only° son, from Me.” 13 Then Abraham° raised° his eyes° and looked°, and behold°, behind° [him] a ram° caught° in the thicket° by his horns°; and Abraham° went° and took° the ram° and offered° him up for a burnt° offering° in the place° of his son°. 14 Abraham° called° the name° of that place° IThe LORD° Will Provide°, as it is said° to this day°, “In the mount° of the LORD° ait will IIbe provided°.”

15 ¶ Then the angel° of the LORD° called° to Abraham° a second° time° from heaven°, 16 and said°, “aBy Myself I have sworn°, declares° the LORD°, because°° you have done° this° thing° and have not withheld° your son°, your only° son, 17 indeed° I will greatly° bless° you, and I will greatly° amultiply° your Iseed° as the stars° of the heavens° and as bthe sand° which° is on the seashore°°; and cyour Iseed° shall possess° the gate° of IItheir enemies°. 18 aIn your Iseed° all° the nations° of the earth° shall IIbe blessed°, because°° you have bobeyed° My voice°.” 19 aSo Abraham° returned° to his young° men°, and they arose° and went° together° to Beersheba°; and Abraham° lived° at Beersheba°.

20 ¶ Now it came° about after° these° things°, that it was told° Abraham°, saying°, “Behold°, aMilcah° Ialso° has borne° children° to your brother° Nahor°: 21 Uz° his firstborn° and Buz° his brother° and Kemuel° the father° of Aram° 22 and Chesed° and Hazo° and Pildash° and Jidlaph° and Bethuel°.” 23 Bethuel° Ibecame° the father° of aRebekah°; these° eight° Milcah° bore° to Nahor°, Abraham’s° brother°. 24 His concubine°, whose name° was Reumah°, Ialso° bore° Tebah° and Gaham° and Tahash° and Maacah°.

Abraham is tempted to offer Isaac.

He giveth proof of his faith and obedience.

3 ¶ And Abrahamº rose up earlyºª in the morning,º and saddledºª² his ass,º and tookºª² twoº of his young menº with² him, and Isaacº his son,º and claveºª the woodº for the burnt offering,º and rose up,ºª and went¹ª² unto² the placeº of which² Godº had toldºª him. 4 Then on the thirdº dayº Abrahamº lifted upºª² his eyes,º and sawºª² the placeº afar off.º² 5 And Abrahamº saidºª unto² his young men,º Abideºª ye here² with² the ass;º and I² and the ladº will go¹ª² yonderº² and worship,ºª and come againºª to² you. 6 And Abrahamº tookºª² the woodº of the burnt offering,º and laidºª [it] upon² Isaacº his son;º and he tookºª² the fireº in his hand,º and a knife;º and they went¹ª² bothº of them together.º 7 And Isaacº spakeºª unto² Abrahamº his father,º and said,ºª My father:º and he said,ºª Here² [am] I, my son.º And he said,ºª Behold² the fireº and the wood:º but where² [is] the lambº for a burnt offering?º 8 And Abrahamº said,ºª My son,º Godº will provideºª himself a lambº for a burnt offering:º so they went¹ª² both² of them¹ together.º 9 And they cameºª to² the placeº which² Godº had toldºª him of; and Abrahamº builtºª² an altarº there,² and laid¹ª the wood¹ in order,ºª²² and boundºª² Isaacº his son,º and laidºª him on² the altarº uponº² the wood.º 10 And Abrahamº stretched forthºª² his hand,º and tookºª² the knifeº to slayºª² his son.º

The angel stayeth him.

11 And the angelº of the LORDº calledºª unto² him out of² heaven,º and said,ºª Abraham,º Abraham:º and he said,ºª Here² [am] I. 12 And he said,ºª Layºª not² thine handº uponº the lad,º neither² do² thou¹ª any thingº unto him: for² nowº I knowºª that² thou² fearestº God,º seeing thou hast notº withheldºª² thy son,º² thine onlyº [son] from² me.

Isaac is exchanged with a ram.

13 And Abrahamº lifted upºª² his eyes,º and looked,ºª and behold² behindº [him] a ramº caughtºª in a thicketº by his horns:º and Abrahamº went¹ª² and tookºª² the ram,º and offered him upºª for a burnt offeringº in the stead¹ of² his son.º

15 ¶ And the angelº of the LORDº calledºª unto² Abrahamº out of² heavenº the second time,º 16 And said,ºª By myself have I sworn,ºª saithºª the LORD,º for² becauseºº thou hast doneºª² this² thing,º and hast notº withheldºª² thy son,º² thine onlyº [son]: 17 That² in blessingºª I will blessºª thee, and in multiplyingºª I will multiplyºª² thy seedº as the starsº of the heaven,º and as the sandº which² [is] upon² the seaº shore;º and thy seedº shall possessºª² the gateº of his enemies;ºª 18 And in thy seedº shall all² the nationsº of the earthº be blessed;ºª becauseºº thou hast obeyedºª my voice.º 19 So Abrahamº returnedºª unto² his young men,º and they rose upºª and went¹ª² togetherº to² Beersheba;º and Abrahamº dweltºª at Beersheba.º
