The Prophetic Call to Samuel

1 Now athe boy° Samuel° was ministering° to the LORD° before° Eli°. And bword° from the LORD° was rare° in those° days°, Ivisions° were infrequent°°.

2 ¶ It happened° at that time° as Eli° was lying° down° in his place° (now ahis eyesight° had begun° to grow dim° [and] he could° not see° [well)], 3 and athe lamp° of God° had not yet° gone° out, and Samuel° was lying° down° in the temple° of the LORD° where°° the ark° of God° [was], 4 that the LORD° called° Samuel°; and he said°, “aHere° I am.” 5 Then he ran° to Eli° and said°, “Here° I am, for you called° me.” But he said°, “I did not call°, lie° down° again°.” So he went° and lay° down°. 6 The LORD° called° yet° again°, “Samuel°!” So Samuel° arose° and went° to Eli° and said°, “Here° I am, for you called° me.” But he Ianswered°, “I did not call°, my son°, lie° down° again°.” 7 aNow Samuel° did not yet° know° the LORD°, nor° had the word° of the LORD° yet° been revealed° to him. 8 So the LORD° called° Samuel° again° for the third° time°. And he arose° and went° to Eli° and said°, “Here° I am, for you called° me.” Then Eli° discerned° that the LORD° was calling° the boy°. 9 And Eli° said° to Samuel°, “Go° lie° down°, and it shall be if° He calls° you, that you shall say°, ‘Speak°, LORD°, for Your servant° is listening°.’” So Samuel° went° and lay° down° in his place°.

10 ¶ Then the LORD° came° and stood° and called° as at other° times°, “Samuel°! Samuel°!” And Samuel° said°, “Speak°, for Your servant° is listening°.” 11 The LORD° said° to Samuel°, “Behold°, aI am about to do° a thing° in Israel° at which° both° ears° of everyone° who hears° it will tingle°. 12 In that day° aI will carry° out against° Eli° all° that I have spoken° concerning° his house°, from beginning° to end°. 13 For aI have told° him that I am about to judge° his house° forever°° for bthe iniquity° which° he knew°, because° chis sons° brought° a curse° on themselves° and dhe did not rebuke° them. 14 Therefore° I have sworn° to the house° of Eli° that athe iniquity° of Eli’s° house° shall not be atoned° for by sacrifice° or offering° forever°°.”

15 ¶ So Samuel° lay° down° until° morning°. Then he aopened° the doors° of the house° of the LORD°. But Samuel° was afraid° to tell° bthe vision° to Eli°. 16 Then Eli° called° Samuel° and said°, “Samuel°, my son°.” And he said°, “Here° I am.” 17 He said°, “What° is the word° that He spoke° to you? Please° do not hide° it from me. aMay God° do° so° to you, and more° also°, if° you hide° anything° from me of all° the words° that He spoke° to you.” 18 So Samuel° told° him everything° and hid° nothing° from him. And he said°, “aIt is the LORD°; let Him do° what° seems good° to Him.”

19 ¶ Thus aSamuel° grew° and bthe LORD° was with him and clet none°° of his words° Ifail°°. 20 All° Israel° afrom Dan° even to Beersheba° knew° that Samuel° was confirmed° as a prophet° of the LORD°. 21 And athe LORD° appeared° again° at Shiloh°, bbecause° the LORD° revealed° Himself to Samuel° at Shiloh° by the word° of the LORD°.

How the Word of the LORD was first revealed to Samuel.

1 ¶ And the childº Samuelº ministeredºª unto² the LORDº beforeº Eli.º And the wordº of the LORDº was² preciousº in those² days;º [there was] no² openºª vision.º 2 And it came to pass² at that time,º when² Eliº [was] laid downºª in his place,º and his eyesº beganºª to wax dim,º [that] he couldºª not² see;ºª 3 And ere² the lampº of Godº went outºª in the templeº of the LORD,º where²² the arkº of Godº [was], and Samuelº was laid downºª [to sleep]; 4 That the LORDº calledºª² Samuel:º and he answered,ºª Here² [am] I. 5 And he ranºª unto² Eli,º and said,ºª Here² [am] I;¹ for² thou calledstºª me. And he said,ºª I calledºª not;² lie downºª again.ºª And he went¹ª² and lay down.ºª 6 And the LORDº calledºª yet² again,ºª Samuel.º And Samuelº aroseºª and went¹ª² to² Eli,º and said,ºª Here² [am] I; for² thou didst callºª me. And he answered,ºª I calledºª not,² my son;º lie downºª again.ºª 7 Now Samuelº did not yetº knowºª² the LORD,º neither was the wordº of the LORDº yet² revealedºª unto² him. 8 And the LORDº calledºª Samuelº againºª the third² time.¹ And he aroseºª and went¹ª² to² Eli,º and said,ºª Here² [am] I; for² thou didst callºª me. And Eliº perceivedºª that² the LORDº had calledºª the child.º 9 Therefore Eliº saidºª unto Samuel,º Go,¹ª² lie down:ºª and it shall be,² if² he callºª² thee, that thou shalt say,ºª Speak,ºª LORD;º for² thy servantº heareth.ºª So Samuelº went¹ª² and lay downºª in his place.º 10 And the LORDº came,ºª and stood,ºª and calledºª as at other times,º Samuel,º Samuel.º Then Samuelº answered,ºª Speak;ºª for² thy servantº heareth.ºª

God telleth Samuel the destruction of Eli's house.

11 ¶ And the LORDº saidºª to² Samuel,º Behold,² I² will doºª a thingº in Israel,º at which² bothº the earsº of every one² that hearethºª it shall tingle.ºª 12 In that² dayº I will performºª against² Eliº² all² [things] which² I have spokenºª concerningº his house:º when I begin,ºª I will also make an end.ºª 13 For I have toldºª him that² I² will judgeºª² his houseº for¹ everº² for the iniquityº which² he knoweth;ºª because² his sonsº made themselves vile,ºª and he restrainedºª them not.² 14 And therefore² I have swornºª unto the houseº of Eli,º that the iniquityº of Eli'sº houseº shall not² be purgedºª with sacrificeº nor offeringº for¹ ever.º²

Samuel, though loth, telleth Eli the vision.

15 ¶ And Samuelº layºª until² the morning,º and openedºª² the doorsº of the houseº of the LORD.º And Samuelº fearedºª to shewºª²² Eliº² the vision.º 16 Then Eliº calledºª² Samuel,º and said,ºª Samuel,º my son.º And he answered,ºª Here² [am] I. 17 And he said,ºª What² [is] the thingº that² [the LORD] hath saidºª unto² thee? I pray thee² hideºª [it] not² from² me: Godº do² so¹ª² to thee, and more² also,¹ª² if² thou hideºª [any] thingº from² me of all²² the thingsº that² he saidºª unto² thee. 18 And Samuelº toldºª him² every² whit,º and hidºª nothing² from² him. And he said,ºª It² [is] the LORD:º let him doºª what seemethº him good.º

19 ¶ And Samuelº grew,ºª and the LORDº was² with² him, and did let none²²² of his wordsº fallºª to the ground.º 20 And all² Israelº from Danº² even to² Beershebaº knewºª that² Samuelº [was] establishedºª [to be] a prophetº of the LORD.º 21 And the LORDº appearedºª againºª in Shiloh:º for² the LORDº revealed¹ª himself² to² Samuelº in Shilohº by the wordº of the LORD.º
