  And cause [me] to look° on wickedness°?
  Yes, bdestruction° and violence° are before° me;
  cStrife° exists° and contention° arises°.
  4 Therefore°° the alaw° is Iignored°
  And justice° IIis never°° upheld°.
  For the wicked° bsurround° the righteous°;
  Therefore°° justice° comes° out cperverted°.

Unto Habakkuk, complaining of the iniquity of the land,

1 ¶ The burdenº which² Habakkukº the prophetº did see.ºª 2 O LORD,º how long²² shall I cry,ºª and thou wilt not² hear!ºª [even] cry outºª unto² thee [of] violence,º and thou wilt not² save!ºª 3 Why² dost thou shewºª me iniquity,º and cause [me] to beholdºª grievance?º for spoilingº and violenceº [are] before² me: and there are² [that] raise upºª strifeº and contention.º 4 Therefore²² the lawº is slacked,ºª and judgmentº doth neverº² go forth:ºª for² the wickedº doth compass¹ª about²² the righteous;º therefore²² wrongºª judgmentº proceedeth.ºª

is shewed the fearful vengeance by the Chaldeans.

5 ¶ Beholdºª ye among the heathen,º and regard,ºª and wonder¹ª marvellously:ºª for² [I] will workºª a workº in your days,º [which] ye will not² believe,ºª though² it be toldºª [you]. 6 For,² lo,² I raise upºª² the Chaldeans,º [that] bitterº and hastyºª nation,º which shall marchºª through the breadthº of the land,º to possessºª the dwellingplacesº [that are] not² theirs. 7 They² [are] terribleº and dreadful:ºª their judgmentº and their dignityº shall proceedºª of² themselves. 8 Their horsesº also are swifterºª than the leopards,º² and are more fierceºª than the eveningº wolves:º² and their horsemenº shall spreadºª themselves, and their horsemenº shall comeºª from far;º² they shall flyºª as the eagleº [that] hastethºª to eat.ºª 9 They shall comeºª all² for violence:º their facesº shall sup upº [as] the east wind,º and they shall gatherºª the captivityº as the sand.º 10 And they² shall scoffºª at the kings,º and the princesºª shall be a scornº unto them: they² shall derideºª every² strong hold;º for they shall heapºª dust,º and takeºª it. 11 Then² shall [his] mindº change,ºª and he shall pass over,ºª and offend,ºª [imputing] thisº his powerº unto his god.º

12 ¶ [Art] thou² not² from everlasting,º² O LORDº my God,º mine Holy One?º we shall not² die.ºª O LORD,º thou hast ordainedºª them for judgment;º and, O mighty God,º thou hast establishedºª them for correction.ºª 13 [Thou art] of purerº eyesº than to beholdºª² evil,º and canstºª not² lookºª on² iniquity:º wherefore² lookestºª thou upon them that deal treacherously,ºª [and] holdest thy tongueºª when the wickedº devourethºª [the man that is] more righteousº than² he? 14 And makestºª menº as the fishesº of the sea,º as the creeping things,º [that have] no² rulerºª over them? 15 They take upºª all² of them with the angle,º they catchºª them in their net,º and gatherºª them in their drag:º therefore²² they rejoiceºª and are glad.ºª 16 Therefore²² they sacrificeºª unto their net,º and burn incenseºª unto their drag;º because² by themº their portionº [is] fat,º and their meatº plenteous.º 17 Shall they therefore²² emptyºª their net,º and not² spareºª continuallyº to slayºª the nations?º
