Jeremiah’s Message for Zedekiah

1 The word° which° came° to Jeremiah° from the LORD° when aKing° Zedekiah° sent° to him bPashhur° the son° of Malchijah°, and cZephaniah° the priest°, the son° of Maaseiah°, saying°, 2 “Please° ainquire° of the LORD° on our behalf°, for bNebuchadnezzar° king° of cBabylon° is warring° against° us; perhaps° the LORD° will deal° with us daccording to all° His Iwonderful° acts°, so that [the enemy] will withdraw° from us.”

3 ¶ Then Jeremiah° said° to them, “You shall say° to Zedekiah° as follows°: 4 ‘Thus° says° the LORD° God° of Israel°, “Behold°, I am about to aturn° back° the weapons° of war° which° are in your hands°, with which° you are warring° against° the king° of Babylon° and the Chaldeans° who are besieging°° you outside°° the wall°; and I will bgather° them into the center° of this° city°. 5 I aMyself° will war° against° you with an boutstretched° hand° and a mighty° arm°, even in canger° and wrath° and great° indignation°. 6 I will also strike° down° the inhabitants° of this° city°, both man° and beast°; they will die° of a great° apestilence°. 7 Then afterwards°°,” declares° the LORD°, “aI will give° over Zedekiah° king° of Judah° and his servants° and the people°, even those who survive° in this° city° from the pestilence°, the sword° and the famine°, into the hand° of Nebuchadnezzar° king° of Babylon°, and into the hand° of their foes° and into the hand° of those who seek° their lives°; and he will strike° them down° with the edge° of the sword°. He bwill not spare° them nor° have° pity° nor° compassion°.”’

8 ¶ “You shall also say° to this° people°, ‘Thus° says° the LORD°, “Behold°, I aset° before° you the way° of life° and the way° of death°. 9 He who adwells° in this° city° will die° by the bsword° and by famine° and by pestilence°; but he who goes° out and falls° away° to the Chaldeans° who are besieging°° you will live°, and he will have° his own life° as booty°. 10 For I have aset° My face° against this° city° for Iharm° and not for good°,” declares° the LORD°. “It will be bgiven° into the hand° of the king° of Babylon° and he will cburn° it with fire°.”’

  And deliver° the [person] who has been robbed° from the IIpower° of [his] oppressor°,
  dThat My wrath° may not go° forth° like fire°
  And eburn° with none° to extinguish° [it],
  Because°° of the evil° of their deeds°.

Zedekiah sendeth to Jeremiah to enquire the event of Nebuchadrezzar's war.

Jeremiah foretelleth a hard siege and miserable captivity.

3 ¶ Then saidºª Jeremiahº unto² them, Thus² shall ye sayºª to² Zedekiah:º 4 Thus² saithºª the LORDº Godº of Israel;º Behold,² I will turn backºª² the weaponsº of warº that² [are] in your hands,º wherewith² ye² fightºª against² the kingº of Babylon,º and [against] the Chaldeans,º which besiegeºª² you withoutº² the walls,º and I will assembleºª them into² the midstº of this² city.º 5 And I myself² will fightºª against² you with an outstretchedºª handº and with a strongº arm,º even in anger,º and in fury,º and in greatº wrath.º 6 And I will smiteºª² the inhabitantsºª of this² city,º both manº and beast:º they shall dieºª of a greatº pestilence.º 7 And afterward,º² saithºª the LORD,º I will deliverºª² Zedekiahº kingº of Judah,º and his servants,º and the people,º and such as are leftºª in this² cityº from² the pestilence,º from² the sword,º and from² the famine,º into the handº of Nebuchadrezzarº kingº of Babylon,º and into the handº of their enemies,ºª and into the handº of those that seekºª their life:º and he shall smiteºª them with the edgeº of the sword;º he shall not² spareºª² them, neither² have pity,ºª nor² have mercy.ºª

He counselleth the people to fall to the Chaldeans,

8 ¶ And unto² this² peopleº thou shalt say,ºª Thus² saithºª the LORD;º Behold,² I setºª beforeº you² the wayº of life,º and the wayº of death.º 9 He that abidethºª in this² cityº shall dieºª by the sword,º and by the famine,º and by the pestilence:º but he that goeth out,ºª and fallethºª to² the Chaldeansº that besiegeºª² you, he shall live,ºªªª and his lifeº shall be² unto him for a prey.º 10 For² I have setºª my faceº against this² cityº for evil,º and not² for good,º saithºª the LORD:º it shall be givenºª into the handº of the kingº of Babylon,º and he shall burnºª it with fire.º

and upbraideth the king's house.

11 ¶ And touching the houseº of the kingº of Judah,º [say], Hearºª ye the wordº of the LORD;º 12 O houseº of David,º thus² saithºª the LORD;º Executeºª judgmentº in the morning,º and deliverºª [him that is] spoiledºª out of the handº² of the oppressor,ºª lest² my furyº go outºª like fire,º and burnºª that none² can quenchºª [it], becauseº² of the evilº of your doings.º 13 Behold,² I [am] against² thee, O inhabitantºª of the valley,º [and] rockº of the plain,º saithºª the LORD;º which say,ºª Who² shall come downºª against² us? or who² shall enterºª into our habitations?º 14 But I will punishºª² you according to the fruitº of your doings,º saithºª the LORD:º and I will kindleºª a fireº in the forestº thereof, and it shall devourºª all things² round aboutº it.
