Baskets of Figs and the Returnees

1 After° aNebuchadnezzar° king° of Babylon° had carried° away° captive° Jeconiah° the son° of Jehoiakim°, king° of Judah°, and the officials° of Judah° with the craftsmen° and smiths° from Jerusalem° and had brought° them to Babylon°, the LORD° showed° me: behold°, two° bbaskets° of figs° set° before° the temple° of the LORD°! 2 One° basket° had very° good° figs°, like afirst-ripe° figs°, and the other° basket° had bvery° bad° figs° which° could not be eaten° due° to rottenness°. 3 Then the LORD° said° to me, “aWhat° do you see°, Jeremiah°?” And I said°, “Figs°, the good° figs°, very° good°; and the bad° [figs], very° bad°, which° cannot° be eaten° due° to rottenness°.”

4 ¶ Then the word° of the LORD° came° to me, saying°, 5 “Thus° says° the LORD° God° of Israel°, ‘Like these° good° figs°, so° I will regard° aas good° the captives° of Judah°, whom° I have sent° out of this° place° [into] the land° of the Chaldeans°. 6 For I will set° My eyes° on them for good°, and I will abring° them again° to this° land°; and I will bbuild° them up and not overthrow° them, and I will cplant° them and not pluck° them up. 7 I will give° them a aheart° to know° Me, for I am the LORD°; and they will be bMy people°, and I will be their God°, for they will creturn° to Me with their whole° heart°.

8 ¶ ‘But like the abad° figs° which° cannot° be eaten° due° to rottenness°—indeed°, thus° says° the LORD°—so° I will Iabandon° bZedekiah° king° of Judah° and his officials°, and the cremnant° of Jerusalem° who remain° in this° land° and the ones who dwell° in the land° of dEgypt°. 9 I will amake° them a terror° [and an] evil° for all° the kingdoms° of the earth°, as a breproach° and a proverb°, a taunt° and a ccurse° in all° places° where°° I will scatter° them. 10 I will send° the asword°, the famine° and the pestilence° upon them until° they are destroyed° from the land° which° I gave° to them and their forefathers°.’”

Under the type of good and bad figs,

1 ¶ The LORDº shewedºª me, and, behold,² twoº basketsº of figsº [were] setºª beforeº the templeº of the LORD,º after¹ that² Nebuchadrezzarº kingº of Babylonº had carried away captiveºª² Jeconiahº the sonº of Jehoiakimº kingº of Judah,º and the princesº of Judah,º with² the carpentersº and smiths,º from Jerusalem,º² and had broughtºª them to Babylon.º 2 Oneº basketº [had] veryº goodº figs,º [even] like the figsº [that are] first ripe:º and the otherº basketº [had] veryº naughtyº figs,º which² could not² be eaten,ºª they were so bad.º² 3 Then saidºª the LORDº unto² me, What² seestºª thou,² Jeremiah?º And I said,ºª Figs;º the goodº figs,º veryº good;º and the evil,º veryº evil,º that² cannot² be eaten,ºª they are so evil.º²

he foresheweth the restoration of them that were in captivity,

4 ¶ Again the wordº of the LORDº came² unto² me, saying,ºª 5 Thus² saithºª the LORD,º the Godº of Israel;º Like these² goodº figs,º so² will I acknowledgeºª² them that are carried away captiveº of Judah,º whom² I have sentºª out of² this² placeº into the landº of the Chaldeansº for [their] good.º 6 For I will setºª mine eyesº upon² them for good,º and I will bring them againºª to² this² land:º and I will buildºª them, and not² pull [them] down;ºª and I will plantºª them, and not² pluck [them] up.ºª 7 And I will giveºª them an heartº to knowºª me, that² I² [am] the LORD:º and they shall be² my people,º and I² will be² their God:º for² they shall returnºª unto² me with their whole² heart.º

and the desolation of Zedekiah and the rest.

8 ¶ And as the evilº figs,º which² cannot² be eaten,ºª they are so evil;º² surely² thus² saithºª the LORD,º So² will I giveºª² Zedekiahº the kingº of Judah,º and his princes,º and the residueº of Jerusalem,º that remainºª in this² land,º and them that dwellºª in the landº of Egypt:º 9 And I will deliverºª them to be removedºª¹ into all² the kingdomsº of the earthº for [their] hurt,º [to be] a reproachº and a proverb,º a tauntº and a curse,º in all² placesº whither²² I shall driveºª them. 10 And I will sendºª² the sword,º² the famine,º and the pestilence,º among them, till² they be consumedºª from off²² the landº that² I gaveºª unto them and to their fathers.º
