1 Then some° aelders° of Israel° came° to me and bsat° down° before° me. 2 And the word° of the LORD° came° to me, saying°, 3 “Son° of man°, these° men° have aset° up their idols° in their hearts° and have bput° right° before° their faces° the stumbling° block° of their iniquity°. Should I be cconsulted° by them at all°? 4 Therefore° speak° to them and tell° them, ‘Thus° says° the Lord° IGOD°, “Any° man° of the house° of Israel° who° sets° up his idols° in his heart°, puts° right° before° his face° the stumbling° block° of his iniquity°, and [then] comes° to the prophet°, I the LORD° will be brought° to give° him an answer° in IIthe matter in view of the amultitude° of his idols°, 5 in order° to lay° hold° of Iathe hearts° of the house° of Israel° who° are IIbestranged° from Me through all° their idols°.”’

6 ¶ “Therefore° say° to the house° of Israel°, ‘Thus° says° the Lord° GOD°, “aRepent° and turn° away° from your idols° and turn° your faces° away° from all° your babominations°. 7 For anyone° of the house° of Israel° or of the aimmigrants° who° stay° in Israel° who separates° himself from Me, sets° up his idols° in his heart°, puts° right° before° his face° the stumbling° block° of his iniquity°, and [then] comes° to the prophet° to inquire° of Me for himself, bI the LORD° will be brought° to answer° him in My own person. 8 I will aset° My face° against that man° and make° him a bsign° and Ia proverb°, and I will cut° him off° from among° My people°. 9 ¶ “But if° the prophet° is Iprevailed° upon to speak° a word°, it is I, the LORD°, who have Iprevailed° upon that prophet°, and I will stretch° out My hand° against° him and adestroy° him from among° My people° Israel°. 10 They will bear° [the punishment of] their iniquity°; as the iniquity° of the inquirer° is, so the iniquity° of the prophet° will be, 11 in order° that the house° of Israel° may no° longer° astray° from Me and no° longer° bdefile° themselves with all° their transgressions°. Thus they will be cMy people°, and I shall be their God°,”’ declares° the Lord° GOD°.”

The City Will Not Be Spared

12 ¶ Then the word° of the LORD° came° to me saying°, 13 “Son° of man°, if° a country° sins° against Me by acommitting° unfaithfulness°, and I stretch° out My hand° against° it, Idestroy° its bsupply° of bread°, send° famine° against it and cut° off° from it both man° and beast°, 14 even a[though] these° three° men°, bNoah°, cDaniel° and dJob° were in its midst°, by their [own] righteousness° they could [only] deliver° ethemselves°,” declares° the Lord° GOD°. 15 “If° I were to cause awild° beasts° to pass° through the land° and they Idepopulated° it, and it became° desolate° so°° that no° one° would pass° through° it because°° of the beasts°, 16 [though] these° three° men° were in its midst°, as I live°,” declares° the Lord° GOD°, “they could not deliver° either° [their] sons° or° [their] daughters°. aThey alone° would be delivered°, but the country° would be desolate°. 17 Or° [if] I should abring° a sword° on that country° and say°, ‘Let the sword° pass° through the country° and bcut° off° man° and beast° from it,’ 18 even [though] these° three° men° were in its midst°, as I live°,” declares° the Lord° GOD°, “they could not deliver° either [their] sons° or [their] daughters°, but they alone° would be delivered°. 19 Or° [if] I should send° a aplague° against° that country° and pour° out My wrath° in blood° on it to cut° off° man° and beast° from it, 20 even [though] Noah°, Daniel° and Job° were in its midst°, as I live°,” declares° the Lord° GOD°, “they could not deliver° either° [their] son° or° [their] daughter°. They would deliver° only themselves° by their righteousness°.”

21 ¶ For thus° says° the Lord° GOD°, “How° much° more°° when° aI send° My four° Isevere° judgments° against° Jerusalem°: sword°, famine°, wild° beasts° and plague° to cut° off° man° and beast° from it! 22 Yet, behold°, Isurvivors° will be left° in it who will be brought° out, [both] sons° and daughters°. Behold°, they are going to come° forth° to you and you will asee° their conduct° and actions°; then you will be bcomforted° for the calamity° which° I have brought° against° Jerusalem° for everything° which° I have brought° upon it. 23 Then they will comfort° you when° you see° their conduct° and actions°, for you will know° that I have not done° ain vain° whatever°° I did° Ito it,” declares° the Lord° GOD°.

God answereth idolaters according to their own heart.

They are exhorted to repent, for fear of judgments, by means of seduced prophets.

6 ¶ Therefore² sayºª unto² the houseº of Israel,º Thus² saithºª the Lordº GOD;º Repent,ºª and turnºª [yourselves] from²² your idols;º and turn awayºª your facesº from²² all² your abominations.º 7 For² every oneº of the houseº² of Israel,º or of the strangerº² that² sojournethºª in Israel,º which separateth¹ª himself² from²² me,¹ and setteth upºª his idolsº in² his heart,º and puttethºª the stumblingblockº of his iniquityº beforeº his face,º and comethºª to² a prophetº to enquireºª of him concerning me; I² the LORDº will answerºª him by myself: 8 And I will setºª my faceº against that² man,º and will make¹ª² him a signº and a proverb,º and I will cut him offºª from the midstº² of my people;º and ye shall knowºª that² I² [am] the LORD.º 9 And if² the prophetº be deceivedºª when he hath spokenºª a thing,º I² the LORDº have deceivedºª² that² prophet,º and I will stretch outºª² my handº upon² him, and will destroyºª him from the midstº² of my peopleº Israel.º 10 And they shall bearºª the punishment of their iniquity:º the punishmentº of the prophetº shall be² even as the punishmentº of him that seekethºª [unto him]; 11 That² the houseº of Israelº may go no² more² astrayºª from²² me,¹ neither² be pollutedºª any more² with all² their transgressions;º but that they may be² my people,º and I² may be² their God,º saithºª the Lordº GOD.º

God's irrevocable sentence of famine,

12 ¶ The wordº of the LORDº came² again to² me, saying,ºª 13 Sonº of man,º when² the landº sinnethºª against me by trespassingºª grievously,º then will I stretch outºª mine handº upon² it, and will breakºª the staffº of the breadº thereof, and will sendºª famineº upon it, and will cut offºª manº and beastº from² it: 14 Though these² threeº men,¹² Noah,º Daniel,º and Job,º were² in² it,¹ they² should deliverºª [but] their own soulsº by their righteousness,º saithºª the Lordº GOD.º

15 ¶ Ifº I cause noisomeº beastsº to pass² through¹ª the land,º and they spoilºª it, so that it be² desolate,º that no man²² may pass throughºª becauseº² of the beasts:º 16 [Though] these² threeº men¹² [were] in² it,¹ [as] I² live,º saithºª the Lordº GOD,º they² shall deliverºª neither² sonsº nor² daughters;º they only² shall be delivered,ºª but the landº shall be² desolate.º

22 ¶ Yet, behold,² therein shall be leftºª a remnantº that shall be brought forth,ºª [both] sonsº and daughters:º behold,² they shall come forthºª unto² you, and ye shall seeºª² their wayº and their doings:º and ye shall be comfortedºª concerning² the evilº that² I have broughtºª upon² Jerusalem,º [even] concerning² all² that² I have broughtºª upon² it. 23 And they shall comfortºª you, when² ye seeºª² their waysº and their doings:º and ye shall knowºª that² I have not² doneºª without causeº² all² that² I have doneºª in it, saithºª the Lordº GOD.º
