God’s Controversy with Israel

  1 aListen° to the word° of the LORD°, O sons° of Israel°,
  For the LORD° has a bcase° against° the inhabitants° of the land°,
  Because° there° is cno° Ifaithfulness° or IIkindness°

  2 [There is] aswearing°, bdeception°, cmurder°, dstealing° and eadultery°.
  They employ° violence°, so that fbloodshed° Ifollows° bloodshed°.
  3 Therefore°° the land° amourns°,
  And everyone° who lives° in it languishes°
Along with the beasts° of the field° and the birds° of the sky°,
  And also° the fish° of the sea° Idisappear°.

God's judgments against the sins of the people,

1 ¶ Hearºª the wordº of the LORD,º ye childrenº of Israel:º for² the LORDº hath a controversyº with² the inhabitantsºª of the land,º because² [there is] no² truth,º nor² mercy,º nor² knowledgeº of Godº in the land.º 2 By swearing,ºª and lying,ºª and killing,ºª and stealing,ºª and committing adultery,ºª they break out,ºª and bloodº touchethºª blood.º 3 Therefore²² shall the landº mourn,ºª and every one² that dwellethºª therein shall languish,ºª with the beastsº of the field,º and with the fowlsº of heaven;º yea, the fishesº of the seaº also² shall be taken away.ºª 4 Yet² let no² manº strive,ºª nor² reproveºª another:º for thy peopleº [are] as they that striveºª with the priest.º 5 Therefore shalt thou fallºª in the day,º and the prophetº also² shall fallºª with² thee in the night,º and I will destroyºª thy mother.º

and of the priests,

6 ¶ My peopleº are destroyedºª for lack²² of knowledge:º because² thou² hast rejectedºª knowledge,º I will also rejectºª thee, that thou shalt be no priestºª² to me: seeing thou hast forgottenºª the lawº of thy God,º I² will also² forgetºª thy children.º 7 As they were increased,¹² so² they sinnedºª against me: [therefore] will I changeºª their gloryº into shame.º 8 They eat upºª the sinº of my people,º and they setºª their heartº on² their iniquity.º 9 And there shall be,² like people,º like priest:º and I will punishºª² them for their ways,º and rewardºª them their doings.º 10 For they shall eat,ºª and not² have enough:ºª they shall commit whoredom,ºª and shall not² increase:ºª because² they have left offºª to take heedºª² to the LORD.º 11 Whoredomº and wineº and new wineº take awayºª the heart.º
