Job maketh a solemn protestation of his integrity in several duties.

1 ¶ I madeºª a covenantº with mine eyes;º why² then should I thinkºª upon² a maid?º 2 For what² portionº of Godº [is there] from above?º² and [what] inheritanceº of the Almightyº from on high?º² 3 [Is] not² destructionº to the wicked?º and a strangeº [punishment] to the workersºª of iniquity?º 4 Doth not² he² seeºª my ways,º and countºª all² my steps?º 5 If² I have walkedºª with² vanity,º or if my footº hath hastedºª to² deceit;º 6 Let me be weighedºª in an evenº balance,º that Godº may knowºª mine integrity.º 7 If² my stepº hath turned² out¹ª of² the way,º and mine heartº walkedºª afterº mine eyes,º and if any blotº hath cleavedºª to mine hands;º 8 [Then] let me sow,ºª and let anotherº eat;ºª yea, let my offspringº be rooted out.ºª 9 If² mine heartº have been deceivedºª by² a woman,º or [if] I have laid waitºª at² my neighbour'sº door;º 10 [Then] let my wifeº grindºª unto another,º and let othersº bow downºª upon² her. 11 For² this² [is] an heinous crime;º yea, it² [is] an iniquityº [to be punished by] the judges.º 12 For² it² [is] a fireº [that] consumethºª to² destruction,º and would root outºª all² mine increase.º 13 If² I did despiseºª the causeº of my manservantº or of my maidservant,º when they contended¹² with² me; 14 What² then shall I doºª when² Godº riseth up?ºª and when² he visiteth,ºª what² shall I answerºª him? 15 Did not² he that madeºª me in the wombº makeºª him? and did not oneº fashionºª us in the womb?º 16 If² I have withheldºª the poorº from [their] desire,º² or have caused the eyesº of the widowº to fail;ºª 17 Or have eatenºª my morselº myself alone,² and the fatherlessº hath not² eatenºª thereof;² 18 (For² from my youthº² he was brought upºª with me, as [with] a father,º and I have guidedºª her from my mother'sº womb;)º² 19 If² I have seenºª any perishºª for want²² of clothing,º or any poorº without² covering;º 20 If² his loinsº have not² blessedºª me, and [if] he were [not] warmedºª with the fleeceº² of my sheep;º 21 If² I have lifted upºª my handº against² the fatherless,º when² I sawºª my helpº in the gate:º 22 [Then] let mine armº fallºª from my shoulder blade,º² and mine armº be brokenºª from the bone.º² 23 For² destructionº [from] Godº [was] a terrorº to² me, and by reason of his highnessº² I couldºª not² endure. 24 If² I have madeºª goldº my hope,º or have saidºª to the fine gold,º [Thou art] my confidence;º 25 If² I rejoicedºª because² my wealthº [was] great,º and because² mine handº had gottenºª much;º 26 If² I beheldºª the sunº when² it shined,ºª or the moonº walkingºª [in] brightness;º 27 And my heartº hath been secretlyº enticed,ºª or my mouthº hath kissedºª my hand:º 28 This² also² [were] an iniquityº [to be punished by] the judge:º for² I should have deniedºª the Godº [that is] above.º² 29 If² I rejoicedºª at the destructionº of him that hatedºª me, or lifted up¹ª myself² when² evilº foundºª him: 30 Neither² have I sufferedºª my mouthº to sinºª by wishingºª a curseº to his soul.º 31 If² the menº of my tabernacleº saidºª not,² Oh that² we hadºª of his flesh!º² we cannot² be satisfied.ºª 32 The strangerº did not² lodgeºª in the street:º [but] I openedºª my doorsº to the traveller.º 33 If² I coveredºª my transgressionsº as Adam,º by hidingºª mine iniquityº in my bosom:º 34 Did I fearºª a greatº multitude,º or did the contemptº of familiesº terrifyºª me, that I kept silence,ºª [and] went not outºª² of the door?º 35 Oh that¹ª² one would² hearºª me! behold,² my desireº [is, that] the Almightyº would answerºª me, and [that] mine adversaryºº had writtenºª a book.º 36 Surely² I would takeºª it upon² my shoulder,º [and] bindºª it [as] a crownº to me. 37 I would declareºª unto him the numberº of my steps;º as² a princeº would I go near¹ª unto² him. 38 If² my landº cryºª against² me, or that the furrowsº likewiseº thereof complain;ºª 39 If² I have eatenºª the fruitsº thereof without² money,º or have caused the ownersº thereof to loseºª their life:º 40 Let thistlesº growºª instead² of wheat,º and cockleº instead² of barley.º The wordsº of Jobº are ended.ºª
