Judah and Tamar

1 And it came° about at that time°, that Judah° Ideparted° from his brothers° and IIvisited° a certain° aAdullamite°, whose name° was Hirah°. 2 Judah° saw° there° a daughter° of a certain° Canaanite° whose name° was aShua°; and he took° her and went° in to her. 3 So she conceived° and bore° a son° and he named°° him aEr°. 4 Then she conceived° again° and bore° a son° and named°° him aOnan°. 5 She bore° still° another° son° and named°° him aShelah°; and it was at Chezib° Ithat she bore° him.

6 ¶ Now Judah° took° a wife° for Er° his firstborn°, and her name° [was] Tamar°. 7 But aEr°, Judah’s° firstborn°, was evil° in the sight° of the LORD°, so the LORD° took° his life°. 8 Then Judah° said° to Onan°, “aGo° in to your brother’s° wife°, and perform° your duty° as a brother-in-law° to her, and raise° up Ioffspring° for your brother°.” 9 Onan° knew° that the Iaoffspring° would not be his; so when° he went° in to his brother’s° wife°, he IIwasted° his seed on the ground° in order not to give° Ioffspring° to his brother°. 10 But what° he did° was displeasing° in the sight° of the LORD°; so He atook° his life° also°. 11 Then Judah° said° to his daughter-in-law° Tamar°, “aRemain° a widow° in your father’s° house° until° my son° Shelah° grows° up”; for he Ithought°, “[I am afraid] that he too° may die° like his brothers°.” So Tamar° went° and lived° in her father’s° house°.

12 ¶ Now Iafter a considerable° time° Shua’s° daughter°, the wife° of Judah°, died°; and when IIthe time° of mourning° was ended°, Judah° went° up to his sheepshearers°° at aTimnah°, he and his friend° Hirah° the Adullamite°. 13 It was told° to Tamar°, “IBehold°, your father-in-law° is going° up to aTimnah° to shear° his sheep°.” 14 So she Iremoved° her widow’s° garments° and acovered° [herself] with a IIveil°, and wrapped° herself, and sat° in the gateway° of IIIEnaim°, which° is on the road° to Timnah°; for she saw° that Shelah° had grown° up, and bshe had not been given° to him as a wife°. 15 When Judah° saw° her, he thought° she [was] a harlot°, for she had covered° her face°. 16 So he turned° aside° to her by the road°, and said°, “IHere° now°, let me come° in to you”; for he did not know° that she was his daughter-in-law°. And she said°, “What° will you give° me, that you may come° in to me?” 17 He said°, therefore, “I will send° you a Iyoung°° goat°° from the flock°.” She said°, moreover, “Will you give° a pledge° until° you send° [it]?” 18 He said°, “What° pledge° shall I give° you?” And she said°, “aYour seal° and your cord°, and your staff° that is in your hand°.” So he gave° [them] to her and went° in to her, and she conceived° by him. 19 Then she arose° and departed°, and Iremoved° her IIveil° and put° on her widow’s° garments°.

20 ¶ When Judah° sent° the Iyoung°° goat°° by his friend° the Adullamite°, to receive° the pledge° from the woman’s° hand°, he did not find° her. 21 He asked° the men° of her place°, saying°, “Where° is the temple° prostitute° who° was by the road° at Enaim°?” But they said°, “There has been° no° temple° prostitute° here°.” 22 So he returned° to Judah°, and said°, “I did not find° her; and furthermore°, the men° of the place° said°, ‘There has been° no° temple° prostitute° here°.’” 23 Then Judah° said°, “Let her Ikeep° them, otherwise° we will become° a laughingstock°. IIAfter° all°, I sent° this° young° goat°, but you did not find° her.”

24 ¶ Now it was about three° months° later that Judah° was informed°, “IYour daughter-in-law° Tamar° has played° the harlot°, and behold°, she is also° with child° by harlotry°.” Then Judah° said°, “Bring° her out and alet her be burned°!” 25 It was while she was being brought° out that she sent° to her father-in-law°, saying°, “I am with child° by the man° to whom° these° things° belong.” And she said°, “aPlease° examine° and see°, whose° signet° ring° and cords° and staff° are these°?” 26 Judah° recognized° [them], and said°, “aShe is more° righteous° than° I, inasmuch°°° as bI did not give° her to my son° Shelah°.” And he did not Ihave° relations° with her again°°.

27 ¶ It came° about at the time° she was giving° birth°, that behold°, there were atwins° in her womb°. 28 Moreover, it took° place° while she was giving° birth°, one put° out a hand°, and the midwife° took° and tied° a scarlet° [thread] on his hand°, saying°, “This° one° came° out first°.” 29 But it came° about as he drew° back° his hand°, that behold°, his brother° came° out. Then she said°, “What° a breach° you have made° for yourself!” So he was named°° IaPerez°. 30 Afterward° his brother° came° out who° had the scarlet° [thread] on his hand°; and he was named°° IaZerah°.

Judah begetteth Er, Onan, and Shelah.

Er marrieth Tamar.

6 And Judahº tookºª a wifeº for Erº his firstborn,º whose nameº [was] Tamar.º 7 And Er,º Judah'sº firstborn,º was² wickedº in the sightº of the LORD;º and the LORDº slewºª him.

Tamar stayeth for Shelah.

11 Then saidºª Judahº to Tamarº his daughter in law,º Remainºª a widowº at thy father'sº house,º till² Shelahº my sonº be grown:ºª for² he said,ºª Lest peradventure² he² dieºª also,² as his brethrenº [did]. And Tamarº went¹ª² and dweltºª in her father'sº house.º

She deceiveth Judah.

13 And it was toldºª Tamar,º saying,ºª Behold² thy father in lawº goeth upºª to Timnathº to shearºª his sheep.º 14 And she putºª her widow'sº garmentsº off¹ª from²² her, and covered² her¹ª with a vail,º and wrapped herself,ºª and sat² in¹ª an open¹² place,º which² [is] by² the wayº to Timnath;º for² she sawºª that² Shelahº was grown,ºª and she² was not² givenºª unto him to wife.º 15 When Judahº saw² her,¹ª he thoughtºª her [to be] an harlot;ºª because² she had coveredºª her face.º 16 And he turnedºª unto² her by² the way,º and said,ºª Go to,ºª I pray thee,² let me come inºª unto² thee; (for² he knewºª not² that² she² [was] his daughter in law.)º And she said,ºª What² wilt thou giveºª me, that² thou mayest come inºª unto² me? 17 And he said,ºª I² will sendºª [thee] a kidºº from² the flock.º And she said,ºª Wilt thou giveºª [me] a pledge,º till² thou sendºª [it]? 18 And he said,ºª What¹² pledgeº shall I giveºª thee? And she said,ºª Thy signet,º and thy bracelets,º and thy staffº that² [is] in thine hand.º And he gaveºª [it] her, and came inºª unto² her, and she conceivedºª by him. 19 And she arose,ºª and went away,¹ª² and laid byºª her vailº from²² her, and put onºª the garmentsº of her widowhood.º 20 And Judahº sentºª² the kidºº by the handº of his friendº the Adullamite,º to receiveºª [his] pledgeº from the woman'sº hand:º² but he found² her¹ª not.² 21 Then he askedºª² the men¹² of that place,º saying,ºª Where² [is] the harlot,º that² [was] openly¹² by² the way side?º And they said,ºª There was² no² harlotº in thisº [place]. 22 And he returnedºª to² Judah,º and said,ºª I cannotº findºª her; and also² the men¹² of the placeº said,ºª [that] there was² no² harlotº in this² [place]. 23 And Judahº said,ºª Let her takeºª [it] to her, lest² we be² shamed:º behold,² I sentºª this² kid,º and thou² hast not² foundºª her.

24 ¶ And it came to pass² about threeº² monthsº after, that it was toldºª Judah,º saying,ºª Tamarº thy daughter in lawº hath played the harlot;ºª and also,² behold,² she [is] with childº by whoredom.º And Judahº said,ºª Bring her forth,ºª and let her be burnt.ºª 25 When she² [was] brought forth,ºª she² sentºª to² her father in law,º saying,ºª By the man,º whose² these² [are, am] I² with child:º and she said,ºª Discern,ºª I pray thee,² whose² [are] these,² the signet,º and bracelets,º and staff.º 26 And Judahº acknowledgedºª [them], and said,ºª She hath been more righteousºª than² I; because² that²² I gaveºª her not² to Shelahº my son.º And he knew² her¹ª againºª no² more.²
