NASB — Proverbs 11 — KJV

Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

  1 A afalse° balance° is an abomination° to the LORD°,
  But a bjust° weight° is His delight°.
  2 When apride° comes°, then comes° dishonor°,
But with the humble° is wisdom°.
  3 The aintegrity° of the upright° will guide° them,
But the bcrookedness° of the treacherous° will destroy° them.
  4 aRiches° do not profit° in the day° of wrath°,
  But brighteousness° delivers° from death°.
  5 The arighteousness° of the blameless° will smooth° his way°,
But bthe wicked° will fall° by his own wickedness°.
  6 The righteousness° of the upright° will deliver° them,
But the treacherous° will abe caught° by [their own] greed°.
  7 When a wicked° man° dies°, [his] aexpectation° will perish°,
  And the bhope° of strong° men° perishes°.
  8 The righteous° is delivered° from trouble°,
  But the wicked° Itakes° his place°.
  9 With [his] amouth° the godless° man° destroys° his neighbor°,
But through knowledge° the brighteous° will be delivered°.
  10 When it agoes well° with the righteous°, the city° rejoices°,
  And when the wicked° perish°, there is joyful° shouting°.
  11 By the blessing° of the upright° a city° is exalted°,
But by the mouth° of the wicked° it is torn° down°.
  12 He who despises° his neighbor° lacks° Isense°,
  But a man° of understanding° keeps° silent°.
  13 He awho goes° about as a talebearer° reveals° secrets°,
  But he who is Itrustworthy°° bconceals° a matter°.
  14 Where there° is no° aguidance° the people° fall°,
But in abundance° of counselors° there is Ivictory°.
  15 He who is aguarantor° for a stranger° will surely° suffer° for it,
  But he who hates° Ibeing a guarantor° is secure°.
  16 A agracious° woman° attains° honor°,
  And ruthless° men° attain° riches°.
  17 The amerciful° man° does° Ihimself° good°,
  But the cruel° man° IIdoes° himself° harm°.
  18 The wicked° earns° deceptive° wages°,
  But he who asows° righteousness° [gets] a true° reward°.
  19 He who° is steadfast° in arighteousness° [will attain] to life°,
And bhe who pursues° evil° [will bring about] his own death°.
  20 The perverse° in heart° are an abomination° to the LORD°,
But the ablameless° in [their] Iwalk° are His bdelight°.
  21 IAssuredly°, the evil° man° will not go° unpunished°,
But the IIdescendants° of the righteous° will be delivered°.
  22 [As] a aring° of gold° in a swine’s° snout°
  [So is] a beautiful° woman° who lacks° Idiscretion°.
  23 The desire° of the righteous° is only° good°,
[But] the aexpectation° of the wicked° is wrath°.
  24 There° is one who scatters°, and [yet] increases° all° the more°,
And there is one who withholds° what° is justly° due°, [and yet it results] only° in want°.
  25 The Iagenerous° man° will be IIprosperous°,
And he who bwaters° will himself° be watered°.
  26 He who withholds° grain°, the apeople° will curse° him,
But bblessing° will be on the head° of him who csells° [it].
  27 He who diligently° seeks° good° seeks° favor°,
But ahe who seeks° evil°, evil will come° to him.
  28 He who atrusts° in his riches° will fall°,
But bthe righteous° will flourish° like the [green] leaf°.
  29 He who atroubles° his own house° will binherit° wind°,
And cthe foolish° will be servant° to the wisehearted°.
  30 The fruit° of the righteous° is aa tree° of life°,
  And bhe who is wise° Iwins° souls°.
  31 If° athe righteous° will be rewarded° in the earth°,
  How° much°° more° the wicked° and the sinner°!

Sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices (10-24).

1 ¶ A falseº balanceº [is] abominationº to the LORD:º but a justº weightº [is] his delight.º 2 [When] prideº cometh,ºª then comethºª shame:º but with² the lowlyºª [is] wisdom.º 3 The integrityº of the uprightº shall guideºª them: but the perversenessº of transgressorsºª shall destroyºªªª them. 4 Richesº profitºª not² in the dayº of wrath:º but righteousnessº deliverethºª from death.º² 5 The righteousnessº of the perfectº shall directºª his way:º but the wickedº shall fallºª by his own wickedness.º 6 The righteousnessº of the uprightº shall deliverºª them: but transgressorsºª shall be takenºª in [their own] naughtiness.º 7 When a wickedº manº dieth,º [his] expectationº shall perish:ºª and the hopeº of unjustº [men] perisheth.ºª 8 The righteousº is delivered² out¹ª of trouble,º² and the wickedº comethºª in his stead.² 9 An hypocriteº with [his] mouthº destroyethºª his neighbour:º but through knowledgeº shall the justº be delivered.ºª 10 When it goeth wellº with the righteous,º the cityº rejoiceth:ºª and when the wickedº perish,ºª [there is] shouting.º 11 By the blessingº of the uprightº the cityº is exalted:ºª but it is overthrownºª by the mouthº of the wicked.º 12 He that is voidº of wisdomº despisethºª his neighbour:º but a manº of understandingº holdeth his peace.ºª 13 A talebearerººª revealethºª secrets:º but he that is of a faithfulºª spiritº concealethºª the matter.º 14 Where no² counselº [is], the peopleº fall:ºª but in the multitudeº of counsellorsºª [there is] safety.º 15 He that is suretyºª for a strangerºª shall smartº¹ª² [for it]: and he that hatethºª suretishipºª is sure.ºª 16 A graciousº womanº retainethºª honour:º and strongº [men] retainºª riches.º 17 The mercifulº manº doeth goodºª to his own soul:º but [he that is] cruelº troublethºª his own flesh.º 18 The wickedº workethºª a deceitfulº work:º but to him that sowethºª righteousnessº [shall be] a sureº reward.º 19 As² righteousnessº [tendeth] to life:º so he that pursuethºª evilº [pursueth it] to his own death.º 20 They that are of a frowardº heartº [are] abominationº to the LORD:º but [such as are] uprightº in [their] wayº [are] his delight.º 21 [Though] handº [join] in hand,º the wickedº shall not² be unpunished:ºª but the seedº of the righteousº shall be delivered.ºª 22 [As] a jewelº of goldº in a swine'sº snout,º [so is] a fairº womanº which is withoutºª discretion.º 23 The desireº of the righteousº [is] only² good:º [but] the expectationº of the wickedº [is] wrath.º 24 There isº that scattereth,ºª and yet² increaseth;ºª and [there is] that withholdethºª more than is meet,º² but [it tendeth] to poverty.º 25 The liberalº soulº shall be made fat:ºª and he that waterethºª shall be wateredºª also² himself.² 26 He that withholdethºª corn,º the peopleº shall curse¹ª² him: but blessingº [shall be] upon the headº of him that sellethºª [it]. 27 He that diligently seekethºª goodº procurethºª favour:º but he that seekethºª mischief,º it shall comeºª unto him. 28 He² that trustethºª in his richesº shall fall:ºª but the righteousº shall flourishºª as a branch.º 29 He that troublethºª his own houseº shall inheritºª the wind:º and the foolº [shall be] servantº to the wiseº of heart.º 30 The fruitº of the righteousº [is] a treeº of life;º and he that winnethºª soulsº [is] wise.º 31 Behold,² the righteousº shall be recompensedºª in the earth:º much more²² the wickedº and the sinner.ºª
