Haman’s Plot against the Jews
1 After° these° events° King° Ahasuerus° apromoted° Haman°, the son° of Hammedatha° bthe Agagite°, and aadvanced° him and Iestablished° his authority° over°° all° the princes° who° [were] with him. 2 All° the king’s° servants° who° were at the king’s° gate° bowed° down° Iand paid° homage° to Haman°; for so° the king° had commanded° concerning him. But aMordecai° neither° bowed° down° nor° paid° homage°. 3 Then the king’s° servants° who° were at athe king’s° gate° said° to Mordecai°, “bWhy° are you transgressing° the king’s° command°?” 4 Now it was when they had spoken° daily° to him and he would not listen° to them, that they told° Haman° to see° whether Mordecai’s° reason° would stand°; for he had told° them that he was a Jew°. 5 When Haman° saw° that aMordecai° neither° bowed° down° nor° paid° homage° to him, Haman° was filled° with rage°. 6 But he Idisdained°° to IIlay° hands° on Mordecai° alone°, for they had told° him [who] the people° of Mordecai° [were]; therefore Haman° asought° to destroy° all° the Jews°, the people° of Mordecai°, who° [were] throughout the whole° kingdom° of Ahasuerus°.

7 ¶ In the first° month°, which° is the month° Nisan°, in the twelfth°° year° of King° Ahasuerus°, IPur°, that is the lot°, was acast° before° Haman° from day° to day° and from month° [to month], IIuntil the twelfth°° month°, that is bthe month° Adar°. 8 Then Haman° said° to King° Ahasuerus°, “There° is a certain° people° scattered° and dispersed° among° the peoples° in all° the provinces° of your kingdom°; atheir laws° are different° from [those] of all° [other] people° and they do not observe° the king’s° laws°, so it is not in the king’s° interest° to let them remain°. 9 If° it is pleasing° to the king°, let it be Idecreed° that they be destroyed°, and I will pay° ten° thousand° talents° of silver° into the hands° of those who carry° on the [king’s] business°, to put° into the king’s treasuries°.” 10 Then athe king° took° his signet° ring° from his hand° and gave° it to Haman°, the son° of Hammedatha° bthe Agagite°, cthe enemy° of the Jews°. 11 The king° said° to Haman°, “The silver° is Iyours°, and the people° [also], to do° with them as you please°°.”

7 ¶ In the firstº month,º that² [is], the monthº Nisan,º in the twelfthºº yearº of kingº Ahasuerus,º they castºª Pur,º that² [is], the lot,º beforeº Hamanº from dayº² to day,º and from monthº² to month,º [to] the twelfthºº [month], that² [is], the monthº Adar.º
He obtaineth, by calumniation, a decree of the king to put the Jews to death.
8 ¶ And Hamanº saidºª unto kingº Ahasuerus,º There isº a certainº peopleº scattered abroadºª and dispersedºª among² the peopleº in all² the provincesº of thy kingdom;º and their lawsº [are] diverseºª from all²² people;º neither² keepºª they the king'sº laws:º therefore it [is] not² for the king'sº profitºª to suffer¹ª² them. 9 If² it pleaseºª² the king,º let it be writtenºª that they may be destroyed:ºª and I will payºª tenº thousandº talentsº of silverº to² the handsº of those that have the chargeºª of the business,º to bringºª [it] into² the king'sº treasuries.º 10 And the kingº tookºª² his ringº from²² his hand,º and gaveºª it unto Hamanº the sonº of Hammedathaº the Agagite,º the Jews'º enemy.ºª 11 And the kingº saidºª unto Haman,º The silverº [is] givenºª to thee, the peopleº also, to doºª with them as it seemeth¹ good¹ to thee.² 12 Then were the king'sº scribesºª calledºª on the thirteenthºº dayº of the firstº month,º and there was writtenºª according to all² that² Hamanº had commandedºª unto² the king'sº lieutenants,º and to² the governorsº that² [were] over² every province,º and to² the rulersº of every peopleº of every provinceº according to the writingº thereof, and [to] every peopleº after their language;º in the nameº of kingº Ahasuerusº was it written,ºª and sealedºª with the king'sº ring.º 13 And the lettersº were sentºª byº postsºª into² all² the king'sº provinces,º to destroy,ºª to kill,ºª and to cause to perish,ºª² all² Jews,º both youngº² and² old,º little childrenº and women,º in oneº day,º [even] upon the thirteenthºº [day] of the twelfthºº month,º which² is the monthº Adar,º and [to take] the spoilº of them for a prey.ºª 14 The copyº of the writingº for a commandmentº to be givenºª in every² provinceº was publishedºª unto all² people,º that they should be² readyº against that² day.º 15 The postsºª went out,ºª being hastenedºª by the king'sº commandment,º and the decreeº was givenºª in Shushanº the palace.º And the kingº and Hamanº sat downºª to drink;ºª but the cityº Shushanº was perplexed.ºª
