Darius Finds Cyrus’s Decree

1 Then° King° Darius° issued° a decree°, and asearch° was made° in the Iarchives°°, where°° the treasures° were stored° in Babylon°. 2 In IEcbatana° in the fortress°, which° is ain the province° of Media°, a scroll° was found° and there was written° in it as follows°: “Memorandum°3 aIn the first° year° of King° Cyrus°, Cyrus° the king° issued° a decree°: ‘[Concerning] the house° of God° at Jerusalem°, let the Itemple°, the place° where° sacrifices° are offered°, be rebuilt° and let its foundations° be IIretained°, its height° being 60° cubits° and its width° 60° cubits°; 4 awith three° layers° of huge° stones° and Ione layer° of timbers°. And let the cost° be paid° from the IIroyal° treasury°. 5 Also° let athe gold° and silver° utensils° of the house° of God°, which° Nebuchadnezzar° took° from the temple° in Jerusalem° and brought° to Babylon°, be returned° and Ibrought° to their places° in the temple° in Jerusalem°; and you shall put° [them] in the house° of God°.’

6 ¶ “Now° [therefore], aTattenai°, governor° of [the province] beyond° the IRiver°, Shethar-bozenai° and IIyour colleagues°, the officials° of [the provinces] beyond° the IRiver°, IIIkeep° away° from there°. 7 Leave° this° work° on the house° of God° alone°; let the governor° of the Jews° and the elders° of the Jews° rebuild° this° house° of God° on its site°. 8 Moreover, aI issue° a decree° concerning what°° you are to do° for these° elders° of Judah° in the rebuilding° of this° house° of God°: the full° cost° is to be paid° to these° people° from the royal° treasury° out of the taxes° of [the provinces] beyond° the River°, and that without° delay°. 9 Whatever° is needed°, both young° bulls°, rams°, and lambs° for a burnt° offering° to the God° of heaven°, and wheat°, salt°, wine° and anointing° oil°, as the priests° in Jerusalem° request°, [it] is to be given° to them daily° without° fail°, 10 that they may offer° Iacceptable° sacrifices° to the God° of heaven° and apray° for the life° of the king° and his sons°. 11 And I issued° a decree° that aany° man° who° violates° this° edict°, a timber° shall be drawn° from his house° and he shall be impaled°° on it and bhis house° shall be made° a refuse° heap° on account° of this°. 12 May the God° who° ahas caused His name° to dwell° there° overthrow° any° king° or people° who° Iattempts°° to change° [it], so as to destroy° this° house° of God° in Jerusalem°. I, Darius°, have issued° [this] decree°, let [it] be carried° out with all° diligence°!”

The Temple Completed and Dedicated

13 ¶ Then° aTattenai°, the governor° of [the province] beyond° the River°, Shethar-bozenai° and their colleagues° carried° out [the decree] with all° diligence°, just° as King° Darius° had sent°. 14 And athe elders° of the Jews° Iwere successful° in building° through the prophesying° of Haggai° the prophet° and Zechariah° the son° of Iddo°. And IIthey finished° building° according° to the command° of the God° of Israel° and the decree° bof Cyrus°, cDarius°, and dArtaxerxes° king° of Persia°. 15 This° Itemple° was completed° IIon the third° day° of the amonth° Adar°; it was the sixth° year° of the reign° of King° Darius°.

The Passover Observed

19aThe exiles°° observed° the Passover° on bthe fourteenth°° of the first° month°. 20 aFor the priests° and the Levites° had purified° themselves together°; all° of them were pure°. Then bthey slaughtered° the Passover° [lamb] for all° the exiles°°, both for their brothers° the priests° and for themselves. 21 The sons° of Israel° who returned° from exile° and aall° those who had separated° themselves from bthe impurity° of the nations° of the land° to [join] them, to seek° the LORD° God° of Israel°, ate° [the Passover]. 22 And athey observed° the Feast° of Unleavened° Bread° seven° days° with joy°, for the LORD° had caused them to rejoice°, and bhad turned° the heart° of cthe king° of Assyria° toward° them to Iencourage°° them in the work° of the house° of God°, the God° of Israel°.

Darius, finding the decree of Cyrus, maketh a new decree for the advancement of the buildings.

1 ¶ Thenº Dariusº the kingº madeºª a decree,º and search¹ª was made² in the houseº of the rolls,º whereº² the treasuresº were laid upºª in Babylon.º 2 And there was foundºª at Achmetha,º in the palaceº that² [is] in the provinceº of the Medes,º aº roll,º and thereinº [was] a recordº thusº written:ºª 3 In the firstº yearº of Cyrusº the kingº [the same] Cyrusº the kingº madeºª a decreeº [concerning] the houseº of Godº at Jerusalem,º Let the houseº be builded,ºª the placeº where² they offeredºª sacrifices,º and let the foundationsº thereof be strongly laid;ºª the heightº thereof threescoreº cubits,º [and] the breadthº thereof threescoreº cubits;º 4 [With] threeº rowsº of² greatº stones,º and a rowº of² newº timber:º and let the expensesº be givenºª out ofº the king'sº house:º 5 And alsoº let the goldenº and silverº vesselsº of the houseº of God,º which² Nebuchadnezzarº took forthºª out ofº the templeº which² [is] at Jerusalem,º and broughtºª unto Babylon,º be restored,ºª and brought againºª unto the templeº which² [is] at Jerusalem,º [every one] to his place,º and placeºª [them] in the houseº of God.º 6 Nowº [therefore], Tatnai,º governorº beyondº the river,º Shetharboznai,º and your companionsº the Apharsachites,º which² [are] beyondº the river,º be² ye¹ª farº fromº thence:º 7 Let the workº of thisº houseº of Godº alone;ºª let the governorº of the Jewsº and the eldersºª of the Jewsº buildºª thisº houseº of Godº inº his place.º 8 Moreover I¹ makeºª a decreeº whatº² ye shall doºª toº the eldersºª of theseº Jewsº for the buildingºª of thisº houseº of God:º that of the king's¹ goods,º²² [even] ofº the tributeº beyondº the river,º forthwithº expensesº beºª givenºª unto theseº men,º that² they be notº hindered.ºª 9 And that² which¹ they have need of,ºª both youngº bullocks,º and rams,º and lambs,º for the burnt offeringsº of the Godº of heaven,º wheat,º salt,º wine,º and oil,º according to the appointmentº of the priestsº which² [are] at Jerusalem,º let it beºª givenºª them dayº by dayº withoutº² fail:º 10 That² they may² offerº¹ªª sacrifices of sweet savoursº unto the Godº of heaven,º and prayºª for the lifeº of the king,º and of his sons.º 11 Also¹ I have madeºª a decree,º that² whosoeverºº² shall alterºª thisº word,º let timberº be pulled downºª fromº his house,º and being set up,ºª let him be hangedºª thereon;º and let his houseº be madeºª a dunghillº forº this.º 12 And the Godº that² hath caused his nameº to dwellºª thereº destroyºª allº kingsº and people,º that² shall putºª to their handº to alterºª [and] to destroyºª thisº houseº of Godº which² [is] at Jerusalem.º Iº Dariusº have madeºª a decree;º let it be doneºª with speed.º

By the help of the enemies, and the directions of the prophets, the Temple is finished.

13 ¶ Thenº Tatnai,º governorº on this sideº the river,º Shetharboznai,º and their companions,º according¹ to² that which² Dariusº the kingº had sent,ºª soº they didºª speedily.º 14 And the eldersºª of the Jewsº builded,ºª and they prosperedºª through the prophesyingº of Haggaiº the prophetº and Zechariahº the sonº of Iddo.º And they builded,ºª and finishedºª [it], accordingº to the commandmentº of the Godº of Israel,º and according to² the commandmentº of Cyrus,º and Darius,º and Artaxerxesº kingº of Persia.º 15 And thisº houseº was finishedºª onº the thirdº dayº of the monthº Adar,º which² was¹ in the sixthº yearº of the reignº of Dariusº the king.º

16 ¶ And the childrenº of Israel,º the priests,º and the Levites,º and the restº of the childrenº of the captivity,º keptºª the dedicationº of thisº houseº of Godº with joy,º 17 And offeredºª at the dedicationº of thisº houseº of Godº an hundredº bullocks,º two hundredº rams,º fourº hundredº lambs;º and for a sin offeringº¹ª forº allº Israel,º twelveºº he¹ goats,º² according to the numberº of the tribesº of Israel.º 18 And they setºª the priestsº in their divisions,º and the Levitesº in their courses,º forº the serviceº of God,º which² [is] at Jerusalem;º as it is writtenº in the bookº of Moses.º
