God Abases the Proud, but Exalts the Righteous.

For the choir director; [set to] Al-tashheth. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.

  1 We agive° thanks° to You, O God°, we give° thanks°,
  For Your name° is bnear°;
  Men declare° cYour wondrous° works°.
  2 “When° I select° an aappointed° time°,
  It is I who bjudge° with equity°.
  3 “The aearth° and all° who dwell° in it Imelt°;
  It is I who have firmly° set° its bpillars°.
      IISelah°.
  4 “I said° to the boastful°, ‘Do not boast°,’
  And to the wicked°, ‘aDo not lift° up the horn°;
  5 Do not lift° up your horn° on high°,
  aDo not speak° with insolent° Ipride°.’”

  Nor° from the Iadesert° [comes] exaltation°;

  He bputs° down° one° and exalts° another°.
  8 For a acup° is in the hand° of the LORD°, and the wine° foams°;
  It is Ibwell° mixed°, and He pours° out of this°;
  Surely° all° the wicked° of the earth° must drain° [and] cdrink° down° its dregs°.

The prophet praiseth God.

1 ¶ [[To the chief Musician,ºª Altaschith,ºª A Psalmº [or] Songº of Asaph.]]º Unto thee, O God,º do we give thanks,ºª [unto thee] do we give thanks:ºª for [that] thy nameº is nearº thy wondrous worksºª declare.ºª

He promiseth to judge uprightly.

2 When² I shall receiveºª the congregationº I² will judgeºª uprightly.º 3 The earthº and all² the inhabitantsºª thereof are dissolved:ºª I² bear upºª the pillarsº of it. Selah.º

He rebuketh the proud by consideration of God's providence.

4 I saidºª unto the fools,ºª Deal not foolishly:ºª² and to the wicked,º Lift not upºª² the horn:º 5 Lift not upºª² your hornº on high:º speakºª [not with] a stiffº neck.º 6 For² promotionºªª¹ [cometh] neither² from the east,º² nor from the west,º² nor² from the south.º² 7 But² Godº [is] the judge:ºª he putteth downºª one,² and setteth² up¹ª another.² 8 For² in the handº of the LORDº [there is] a cup,º and the wineº is red;ºª it is fullº of mixture;º and he poureth outºª of the same:º² but² the dregsº thereof, all² the wickedº of the earthº shall wring [them] out,ºª [and] drinkºª [them].
