Peril in Moving the Ark

1 aNow David° again°° gathered° all° the chosen° men of Israel°, thirty° thousand°. 2 And David° arose° and went° with all° the people° who° were with him to IaBaale-judah°, to bring° up from there° the ark° of God° which° is called° by the bName°, the very name° of the LORD° of hosts° who cis IIenthroned° [above] the cherubim°. 3 They Iplaced° the ark° of God° on aa new° cart° that they might bring° it from the house° of Abinadab° which° was on the hill°; and Uzzah° and Ahio°, the sons° of Abinadab°, were leading° the new° cart°. 4 So athey brought° it with the ark° of God° from the house° of Abinadab°, which° was on the hill°; and Ahio° was walking° ahead° of the ark°. 5 Meanwhile, David° and all° the house° of Israel° awere celebrating° before° the LORD° bwith all° kinds of [instruments made of] Ifir° wood°, and with lyres°, harps°, tambourines°, castanets° and cymbals°.

6 ¶ But when they came° to the athreshing° floor° of Nacon°, Uzzah° breached° out toward° the ark° of God° and took° hold° of it, for the oxen° nearly upset° [it]. 7 And the anger° of the LORD° burned° against Uzzah°, and aGod° struck° him down° there° for Ihis irreverence°; and he died° there° by the ark° of God°. 8 David° became° angry° because°° Iof the LORDS° outburst°° against Uzzah°, and that place° is called° IIPerez-uzzah° to this° day°. 9 So aDavid° was afraid° of the LORD° that day°; and he said°, “How° can the ark° of the LORD° come° to me?” 10 And David° was unwilling°° to move° the ark° of the LORD° into the city° of David° with him; but David° took° it aside° to the house° of aObed-edom° the Gittite°. 11 Thus the ark° of the LORD° remained° in the house° of Obed-edom° the Gittite° three° months°, and the LORD° ablessed° Obed-edom° and all° his household°.

The Ark Is Brought to Jerusalem

12 ¶ Now it was told° King° David°, saying°, “The LORD° has blessed° the house° of Obed-edom° and all° that belongs to him, on account° of the ark° of God°.” aDavid° went° and brought° up the ark° of God° from the house° of Obed-edom° into bthe city° of David° with gladness°. 13 And so it was, that when° the abearers° of the ark° of the LORD° had gone° six° paces°, he sacrificed° an box° and a fatling°. 14 And aDavid° was dancing° before° the LORD° with all° [his] might°, and David° was Ibwearing° a linen° ephod°. 15 So David° and all° the house° of Israel° were bringing° up the ark° of the LORD° with shouting° and the sound° of the trumpet°.

16 ¶ Then it happened° [as] the ark° of the LORD° came° into the city° of David° that aMichal° the daughter° of Saul° looked° out of the window° and saw° King° David° leaping° and dancing° before° the LORD°; and she despised° him in her heart°.

17 ¶ So they brought° in the ark° of the LORD° and set° it ain its place° inside° the tent° which° David° had pitched° for it; and bDavid° offered° burnt° offerings° and peace° offerings° before° the LORD°. 18 When David° had finished° offering° the burnt° offering° and the peace° offering°, ahe blessed° the people° in the name° of the LORD° of hosts°. 19 Further, he distributed° to all° the people°, to all° the multitude° of Israel°, both° to men° and women°, a cake° of bread° and one° of dates° and one° of raisins° to each° one°. Then all° the people° departed° each° to his house°.

20 ¶ But when David° returned° to bless° his household°, Michal° the daughter° of Saul° came° out to meet° David° and said°, “How° the king° of Israel° distinguished° himself today°! aHe uncovered° himself today° in the eyes° of his servants’° maids° as one° of the bfoolish° ones° shamelessly° uncovers° himself!” 21 So David° said° to Michal°, “a[It was] before° the LORD°, who° chose° me above° your father° and above° all° his house°, to appoint° me ruler° over° the people° of the LORD°, over° Israel°; therefore I will celebrate° before° the LORD°. 22 I will be more° lightly° esteemed° than° this° and will be humble° in my own eyes°, but with the maids° of whom° you have spoken°, with them I will be distinguished°.” 23 Michal° the daughter° of Saul° had° no° child° to the day° of her death°.

David fetcheth the Ark from Kirjath-jearim on a new cart.

6 ¶ And when they cameºª to² Nachon'sº threshingfloor,º Uzzahº put forthºª [his hand] to² the arkº of God,º and took holdºª of it; for² the oxenº shookºª [it]. 7 And the angerº of the LORDº was kindledºª against Uzzah;º and Godº smoteºª him there² for² [his] error;º and there² he diedºª by² the arkº of God.º 8 And Davidº was displeased,ºª because²² the LORDº had madeºª a breachº upon Uzzah:º and he called¹ª the name² of the² placeº Perezuzzahº to² this² day.º 9 And Davidº was afraidºª of² the LORDº that² day,º and said,ºª How² shall the arkº of the LORDº comeºª to² me? 10 So Davidº wouldºª not² removeºª² the arkº of the LORDº unto² him into² the cityº of David:º but Davidº carried it asideºª into the houseº of Obededomº the Gittite.º

God blesseth Obed-edom for the Ark.

11 And the arkº of the LORDº continuedºª in the houseº of Obededomº the Gittiteº threeº months:º and the LORDº blessedºª² Obededom,º and all² his household.º

David bringeth the Ark into Zion with sacrifices, danceth before it, for which Michal despiseth him.

12 ¶ And it was toldºª kingº David,º saying,ºª The LORDº hath blessedºª² the houseº of Obededom,º and all² that² [pertaineth] unto him, because² of the arkº of God.º So Davidº went¹ª² and brought upºª² the arkº of Godº from the houseº² of Obededomº into the cityº of Davidº with gladness.º 13 And it was² [so], that when² they that bareºª the arkº of the LORDº had goneºª sixº paces,º he sacrificedºª oxenº and fatlings.º 14 And Davidº dancedºª beforeº the LORDº with all² [his] might;º and Davidº [was] girdedºª with a linenº ephod.º 15 So Davidº and all² the houseº of Israelº brought upºª² the arkº of the LORDº with shouting,º and with the soundº of the trumpet.º 16 And as² the arkº of the LORDº cameºª into the cityº of David,º Michalº Saul'sº daughterº lookedºª through² a window,º and sawºª² kingº Davidº leapingºª and dancingºª beforeº the LORD;º and she despisedºª him in her heart.º

He placeth it in a tabernacle with great joy and feasting.

17 ¶ And they brought¹ª in²² the arkº of the LORD,º and setºª it in his place,º in the midstº of the tabernacleº that² Davidº had pitchedºª for it: and Davidº offeredºª burnt offeringsº and peace offeringsº beforeº the LORD.º 18 And as soon as Davidº had made an endºª of offeringºª² burnt offeringsº and peace offerings,º he blessedºª² the peopleº in the nameº of the LORDº of hosts.º 19 And he dealtºª among all² the people,º [even] among the whole² multitudeº of Israel,º as well to² the womenº as men,º² to every oneº aº cakeº of bread,º and a² good pieceº [of flesh], and a² flagonº [of wine]. So all² the peopleº departed¹ª² every oneº to his house.º

Michal reproving David for his religious joy is childless to her death.

20 ¶ Then Davidº returnedºª to blessºª² his household.º And Michalº the daughterº of Saulº came outºª to meetºª David,º and said,ºª How² gloriousºª was the kingº of Israelº to day,º who² uncovered¹ª himself² to dayº in the eyesº of the handmaidsº of his servants,º as oneº of the vain fellowsº shamelessly¹ª uncovereth¹ª himself!º 21 And Davidº saidºª unto² Michal,º [It was] beforeº the LORD,º which² choseºª me before thy father,º² and before all²² his house,º to appointºª me rulerº over² the peopleº of the LORD,º over² Israel:º therefore will I playºª beforeº the LORD.º 22 And I will yet² be more vileºª than thus,º² and will be² baseº in mine own sight:º and of² the maidservantsº which² thou hast spokenºª of, of them shall I be had in honour.ºª 23 Therefore Michalº the daughterº of Saulº had² no² childº¹ª unto² the dayº of her death.º
