Obey God and Prosper

1 “Now this° is the commandment°, the statutes° and the judgments° which° the LORD° your God° has commanded° [me] to teach° you, that you might do° [them] in the land° where°° you are going° over° to possess° it, 2 so° that you and your son° and your grandson° might afear° the LORD° your God°, to keep° all° His statutes° and His commandments° which° I command° you, ball° the days° of your life°, and that your days° may be prolonged°. 3 O Israel°, you should listen° and Ibe careful° to do° [it], that ait may be well° with you and that you may multiply° greatly°, just° as the LORD°, the God° of your fathers°, has promised° you, [in] ba land° flowing° with milk° and honey°.

4 ¶ “aHear°, O Israel°! The LORD° is our God°, the bLORD° is one°! 5 aYou shall love° the LORD° your God° bwith all° your heart° and with all° your soul° and with all° your might°. 6 aThese° words°, which° I am commanding° you today°, shall be on your heart°. 7 aYou shall teach° them diligently° to your sons° and shall talk° of them when you sit° in your house° and when you walk° by the way° and when you lie° down° and when you rise° up. 8 aYou shall bind° them as a sign° on your hand° and they shall be as Ifrontals° IIon your forehead°°. 9 aYou shall write° them on the doorposts° of your house° and on your gates°.

10 ¶ “Then it shall come° about when° the LORD° your God° brings° you into the land° which° He swore° to your fathers°, Abraham°, Isaac° and Jacob°, to give° you, agreat° and splendid° cities° which° you did not build°, 11 and houses° full° of all° good° things° which° you did not fill°, and hewn° cisterns° which° you did not dig°, vineyards° and olive° trees° which° you did not plant°, and ayou eat° and are satisfied°, 12 then watch° yourself, that ayou do not forget° the LORD° who° brought° you from the land° of Egypt°, out of the house° of Islavery°. 13 aYou shall Ifear° [only] the LORD° your God°; and you shall IIworship° Him and bswear° by His name°. 14 aYou shall not follow°° other° gods°, any° of the gods° of the peoples° who° surround° you, 15 for the LORD° your God° in the midst° of you is a ajealous° God°; otherwise° the anger° of the LORD° your God° will be kindled° against you, and He will Iwipe° you off°° the face° of the earth°.

16 ¶ “aYou shall not put° the LORD° your God° to the test°, bas you tested° [Him] at Massah°. 17 aYou should diligently° keep° the commandments° of the LORD° your God°, and His testimonies° and His statutes° which° He has commanded° you. 18 You shall do° what is right° and good° in the sight° of the LORD°, that ait may be well° with you and that you may go° in and possess° the good° land° which° the LORD° swore° to [give] your fathers°, 19 by driving° out all° your enemies° from before° you, as the LORD° has spoken°.

20 ¶ “aWhen° your son° asks° you in time° to come°, saying°, ‘What° [do] the testimonies° and the statutes° and the judgments° [mean] which° the LORD° our God° commanded° you?’ 21 then you shall say° to your son°, ‘We were slaves° to Pharaoh° in Egypt°, and the LORD° brought° us from Egypt° with a mighty° hand°. 22 Moreover, the LORD° showed° great° and distressing° signs° and wonders° before our eyes° against Egypt°, Pharaoh° and all° his household°; 23 He brought° us out from there° in order° to bring° us in, to give° us the land° which° He had sworn° to our fathers°.’ 24 So the LORD° commanded° us to observe° all° these° statutes°, ato fear° the LORD° our God° for our good° always°° and bfor our survival°, as [it is] today°. 25 aIt will be righteousness° for us if° we Iare careful° to observe° all° this° commandment° before° the LORD° our God°, just° as He commanded° us.

An exhortation thereto.

3 ¶ Hearºª therefore, O Israel,º and observeºª to doºª [it]; that² it may be wellºª with thee, and that² ye may increaseºª mightily,º as² the LORDº Godº of thy fathersº hath promisedºª thee, in the landº that flowethºª with milkº and honey.º 4 Hear,ºª O Israel:º The LORDº our Godº [is] oneº LORD:º 5 And thou shalt loveºª² the LORDº thy Godº with all² thine heart,º and with all² thy soul,º and with all² thy might.º 6 And these² words,º which² I² commandºª thee this day,º shall be² in² thine heart:º 7 And thou shalt teach them diligentlyºª unto thy children,º and shalt talkºª of them when thou sittestºª in thine house,º and when thou walkest¹ª² by the way,º and when thou liest down,ºª and when thou risest up.ºª 8 And thou shalt bindºª them for a signº upon² thine hand,º and they shall be² as frontletsº between² thine eyes.º 9 And thou shalt writeºª them upon² the postsº of thy house,º and on thy gates.º 10 And it shall be,² when² the LORDº thy Godº shall have broughtºª thee into² the landº which² he swareºª unto thy fathers,º to Abraham,º to Isaac,º and to Jacob,º to giveºª thee greatº and goodlyº cities,º which² thou buildedstºª not,² 11 And housesº fullº of all² goodº [things], which² thou filledstºª not,² and wellsº digged,ºª which² thou diggedstºª not,² vineyardsº and olive trees,º which² thou plantedstºª not;² when thou shalt have eatenºª and be full;ºª 12 [Then] bewareºª lest² thou forgetºª² the LORD,º which² brought thee forthºª out of the landº² of Egypt,º from the houseº² of bondage.º 13 Thou shalt fearºª² the LORDº thy God,º and serveºª him, and shalt swearºª by his name.º 14 Ye shall not² go¹ª² afterº otherº gods,º of the godsº² of the peopleº which² [are] round aboutº you; 15 (For² the LORDº thy Godº [is] a jealousº Godº amongº you) lest² the angerº of the LORDº thy Godº be kindledºª against thee, and destroyºª thee from off²² the faceº of the earth.º
