NASB — 2 Samuel 22 — KJV

David’s Psalm of Deliverance

1 aAnd David° spoke° bthe words° of this° song° to the LORD° in the day° that the LORD° delivered° him from the Ihand° of all° his enemies° and from the Ihand° of Saul°. 2 He said°,
  “aThe LORD° is my Irock° and my fortress° and my deliverer°;
  3 IaMy God°, my rock°, in whom I take° refuge°,
  My bshield° and cthe horn° of my salvation°, my stronghold° and dmy refuge°;
  My savior°, You save° me from violence°.
  4 “I call° upon the LORD°, awho is worthy to be praised°,
  And I am saved° from my enemies°.
  5 “For athe waves° of death° encompassed° me;
  bThe torrents° of Idestruction° IIoverwhelmed° me;
  6 aThe cords° of ISheol° surrounded° me;
  The snares° of death° confronted° me.
  7aIn my distress° I called° upon the LORD°,
  Yes, I Icried° to my God°;
  And from His temple° He heard° my voice°,
  And my cry° for help° [came] into His ears°.
  8 “Then athe earth° shook° and quaked°,
  bThe foundations° of heaven° were trembling°
  And were shaken°, because° He was angry°.
  9 “Smoke° went° up Iout of His nostrils°,
  aFire° from His mouth° devoured°;
  bCoals° were kindled° by it.
  10 “He bowed° the heavens° also, and came° down°
  With athick° darkness° under° His feet°.
  11aAnd He rode° on a cherub° and flew°;
  And He Iappeared° on bthe wings° of the wind°.
  12aAnd He made° darkness° Icanopies° around° Him,
  A mass° of waters°, thick° clouds° of the sky°.
  13 “From the brightness° before° Him
  aCoals° of fire° were kindled°.
  14aThe LORD° thundered° from heaven°,
  And the Most° High° uttered° His voice°.
  15aAnd He sent° out arrows°, and scattered° them,
  Lightning°, and Irouted° them.
  16 “Then the channels° of the sea° appeared°,
  The foundations° of the world° were Ilaid° bare°
  By the rebuke° of the LORD°,
  aAt the blast° of the breath° of His nostrils°.
  17aHe sent° from on high°, He took° me;
  bHe drew° me out of many° waters°.
  18 “He delivered° me from my strong° enemy°,
  From those who hated° me, for they were too° strong° for me.
  19 “They confronted° me in the day° of my calamity°,
  aBut the LORD° was my support°.
  20aHe also brought° me forth° into a broad° place°;
  He rescued° me, bbecause° He delighted° in me.
  21aThe LORD° has rewarded° me according to my righteousness°;
  bAccording to the cleanness° of my hands° He has recompensed° me.
  22aFor I have kept° the ways° of the LORD°,
  And have not acted° wickedly° against° my God°.
  23aFor all° His ordinances° [were] before° me,
  And [as for] His statutes°, I did not depart° from Ithem.
  24aI was also Iblameless° toward Him,
  And I kept° myself from my iniquity°.
  25aTherefore the LORD° has recompensed° me according to my righteousness°,
  According to my cleanness° before° His eyes°.
  26aWith the Ikind° You show° Yourself Ikind°,
  With the IIblameless° You show° Yourself IIblameless°;
  27 aWith the pure° You show° Yourself pure°,
  bAnd with the perverted° You show° Yourself Iastute°.
  28aAnd You save° an afflicted° people°;
  bBut Your eyes° are on the haughty° [whom] You abase°.
  29aFor You are my lamp°, O LORD°;
  And the LORD° illumines° my darkness°.
  30aFor by You I can Irun° upon a troop°;
  By my God° I can leap° over a wall°.
  31aAs for God°, His way° is Iblameless°;
  bThe word° of the LORD° is tested°;
  cHe is a shield° to all° who take° refuge° in Him.
  32aFor who° is God°, besides° the LORD°?
  bAnd who° is a rock°, besides° our God°?
  33aGod° is my strong° fortress°;
  And He Isets° the IIblameless° in IIIHis way°.
  34aHe makes° Imy feet° like hinds’° [feet],
  bAnd sets° me on my high° places°.
  35aHe trains° my hands° for battle°,
  bSo that my arms° can bend° a bow° of bronze°.
  36 “You have also given° me athe shield° of Your salvation°,
  And Your Ihelp° makes° me great°.
  37aYou enlarge° my steps° under° me,
  And my Ifeet° have not slipped°.
  38 “I pursued° my enemies° and adestroyed° them,
  And I did not turn° back° until° they were consumed°.
  39 “And I have devoured° them and shattered° them, so that they did not rise°;
  And athey fell° under° my feet°.
  40 “For You have girded° me with strength° for battle°;
  You have Isubdued° under° me athose who rose° up against me.
  41 “You have also amade° my enemies° turn° [their] backs° to me,
  And I Idestroyed° those who hated° me.
  42aThey looked°, but there° was none° to save°;
  b[Even] to the LORD°, but He did not answer° them.
  43aThen I pulverized° them as the dust° of the earth°;
  bI crushed° [and] stamped° them as the mire° of the streets°.
  44aYou have also delivered° me from the contentions° of my people°;
  bYou have kept° me as head° of the nations°;
  cA people° whom I have not known° serve° me.
  45aForeigners°° pretend° obedience° to me;
  As soon as they hear°°, they obey° me.
  46 “Foreigners°° Ilose° heart°,
  aAnd IIcome° trembling° out of their IIIfortresses°.
  47 “The LORD° lives°, and blessed° be my rock°;
  And exalted° be IaGod°, the rock° of my salvation°,
  48 aThe God° who executes° vengeance° for me,
  bAnd brings° down° peoples° under° me,
  49 Who also brings° me out from my enemies°;
  You even lift° me above° athose who rise° up against me;
  bYou rescue° me from the violent° man°.
  50aTherefore°° I will give° thanks° to You, O LORD°, among the nations°,
  And I will sing° praises° to Your name°.
  51a[He] is a tower° of Ideliverance° to His king°,
  And bshows° lovingkindness° to His anointed°,
  cTo David° and his IIdescendants° forever°°.”

A psalm of thanksgiving for God's powerful deliverance, and manifold blessings.

1 ¶ And Davidº spakeºª unto the LORDº² the wordsº of this² songº in the dayº [that] the LORDº had deliveredºª him out of the handº² of all² his enemies,ºª and out of the handº² of Saul:º 2 And he said,ºª The LORDº [is] my rock,º and my fortress,º and my deliverer;ºª 3 The Godº of my rock;º in him will I trust:ºª [he is] my shield,º and the hornº of my salvation,º my high tower,º and my refuge,º my saviour;ºª thou savestºª me from violence.º² 4 I will call¹ª on² the LORD,º [who is] worthy to be praised:ºª so shall I be savedºª from mine enemies.ºª² 5 When² the wavesº of deathº compassedºª me, the floodsº of ungodly² men¹ made me afraid;ºª 6 The sorrowsº of hellº compassed me about;ºª the snaresº of deathº preventedºª me; 7 In my distressº I called¹ª upon² the LORD,º and criedºª to² my God:º and he did hearºª my voiceº out of his temple,º² and my cryº [did enter] into his ears.º 8 Then the earthº shookºªªª and trembled;ºª the foundationsº of heavenº movedºª and shook,ºª because² he was wroth.ºª 9 There went upºª a smokeº out of his nostrils,º and fireº out of his mouthº² devoured:ºª coalsº were kindledºª by² it. 10 He bowedºª the heavensº also, and came down;ºª and darknessº [was] under² his feet.º 11 And he rodeºª upon² a cherub,º and did fly:ºª and he was seenºª upon² the wingsº of the wind.º 12 And he madeºª darknessº pavilionsº round aboutº him, darkº waters,º [and] thick cloudsº of the skies.º 13 Through the brightnessº² before² him were coalsº of fireº kindled.ºª 14 The LORDº thunderedºª from² heaven,º and the most Highº utteredºª his voice.º 15 And he sent outºª arrows,º and scatteredºª them; lightning,º and discomfitedºª them. 16 And the channelsº of the seaº appeared,ºª the foundationsº of the worldº were discovered,ºª at the rebukingº of the LORD,º at the blastº² of the breathº of his nostrils.º 17 He sentºª from above,º² he tookºª me; he drewºª me out of many¹ waters;º²² 18 He deliveredºª me from my strong¹ enemy,ºª²² [and] from them that hatedºª² me: for² they were too strongºª for² me. 19 They preventedºª me in the dayº of my calamity:º but the LORDº was² my stay.º 20 He brought me forthºª also into a large place:º² he deliveredºª me, because² he delightedºª in me. 21 The LORDº rewardedºª me according to my righteousness:º according to the cleannessº of my handsº hath he recompensedºª me. 22 For² I have keptºª the waysº of the LORD,º and have not² wickedly² departed¹ª from my God.º² 23 For² all² his judgmentsº [were] before² me: and [as for] his statutes,º I did not² departºª from² them. 24 I was² also uprightº before him, and have kept¹ª myself² from mine iniquity.º² 25 Therefore the LORDº hath recompensedºª me according to my righteousness;º according to my cleannessº in² his eye sight.º¹ 26 With² the mercifulº thou wilt shew thyself merciful,ºª [and] with² the uprightº manº thou wilt shew thyself upright.ºª 27 With² the pure¹ª² thou wilt shew thyself pure;ºª and with² the frowardº thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.ºª 28 And the afflictedº peopleº thou wilt save:ºª but thine eyesº [are] upon² the haughty,ºª [that] thou mayest bring [them] down.ºª 29 For² thou² [art] my lamp,º O LORD:º and the LORDº will lightenºª my darkness.º 30 For² by thee I have runºª through a troop:º by my Godº have I leaped² over¹ª a wall.º 31 [As for] God,º his wayº [is] perfect;º the wordº of the LORDº [is] tried:ºª he² [is] a bucklerº to all² them that trustºª in him. 32 For² who² [is] God,º saveº² the LORD?º and who² [is] a rock,º saveº² our God?º 33 Godº [is] my strengthº [and] power:º and he makethºª my wayº perfect.º 34 He makethºª my feetº like¹ª hinds'º [feet]: and settethºª me upon² my high places.º 35 He teachethºª my handsº to war;º so that a bowº of steelº is brokenºª by mine arms.º 36 Thou hast also givenºª me the shieldº of thy salvation:º and thy gentlenessº¹ªª hath made me great.ºª 37 Thou hast enlargedºª my stepsº under² me; so that my feetº did not² slip.ºª 38 I have pursuedºª mine enemies,ºª and destroyedºª them; and turned not againºª² until² I had consumedºª them. 39 And I have consumedºª them, and woundedºª them, that they could not² arise:ºª yea, they are fallenºª under² my feet.º 40 For thou hast girdedºª me with strengthº to battle:º them that rose upºª against me hast thou subduedºª under² me. 41 Thou hast also givenºª me the necksº of mine enemies,ºª that I might destroyºª them that hateºª me. 42 They looked,ºª but [there was] none² to save;ºª [even] unto² the LORD,º but he answeredºª them not.² 43 Then did I beatºª them as small as the dustº of the earth,º I did stampºª them as the mireº of the street,º [and] did spread them abroad.ºª 44 Thou also hast deliveredºª me from the strivingsº² of my people,º thou hast keptºª me [to be] headº of the heathen:º a peopleº [which] I knewºª not² shall serveºª me. 45 Strangersºº shall submit¹ª themselves² unto me: as soon as they hear,ººª they shall be obedientºª unto me. 46 Strangersºº shall fade away,ºª and they shall be afraidºª out of their close places.º² 47 The LORDº liveth;º and blessedºª [be] my rock;º and exaltedºª be the Godº of the rockº of my salvation.º 48 It [is] Godº that avengethººª me, and that bringeth down¹ª² the peopleº under² me, 49 And that bringeth me forthºª from mine enemies:ºª² thou also hast lifted me up on highºª above them that rose upºª² against me: thou hast deliveredºª me from the violent¹ man.º²² 50 Therefore²² I will give thanksºª unto thee, O LORD,º among the heathen,º and I will sing praisesºª unto thy name.º 51 [He is] the towerºª¹ª of salvationº for his king:º and shewethºª mercyº to his anointed,º unto David,º and to his seedº for¹ evermore.º²
