David Flees to the Philistines

1 Then David° said° Ito himself°, “Now° I will perish° one° day° by the hand° of Saul°. aThere° is nothing° better° for me than° IIto escape° into the land° of the Philistines°. Saul° then will despair° of searching° for me anymore° in all° the territory° of Israel°, and I will escape° from his hand°.” 2 So David° arose° and crossed° over°, he and athe six° hundred° men° who° were with him, to bAchish° the son° of Maoch°, king° of Gath°. 3 And David° lived° with Achish° at Gath°, he and his men°, aeach° with his household°, [even] David° with bhis two° wives°, Ahinoam° the Jezreelitess°, and Abigail° the Carmelitess°, Nabal’s° Iwidow°. 4 Now it was told° Saul° that David° had fled° to Gath°, so he no° longer°° searched° for him.

5 ¶ Then David° said° to Achish°, “If° now° I have found° favor° in your sight°, let them give° me a place° in one° of the cities° in the country°, that I may live° there°; for why° should your servant° live° in the royal° city° with you?” 6 So Achish° gave° him Ziklag° that day°; therefore° aZiklag° has° belonged to the kings° of Judah° to this° day°. 7 The number° of days° that David° lived° in the country° of the Philistines° was aa year° and four° months°.

8 ¶ Now David° and his men° went° up and raided° athe Geshurites° and the Girzites° and bthe Amalekites°; for they were the inhabitants° of the land° from ancient° times°, as you come° to cShur° even as far° as the land° of Egypt°. 9 David° Iattacked° the land° and did not leave° a man° or a woman° alive°, and he atook° away the sheep°, the cattle°, the donkeys°, the camels°, and the clothing°. Then he returned° and came° to Achish°. 10 Now Achish° said°, “Where° have you amade° a raid° today°?” And David° said°, “Against° the INegev° of Judah° and against° the INegev° of bthe Jerahmeelites° and against° the INegev° of cthe Kenites°.” 11 David° did not leave° a man° or a woman° alive° to bring° to Gath°, saying°, “Otherwise° they will tell° about° us, saying°, ‘So° has David° done° and so° [has been] his practice° all° the time° he has lived° in the country° of the Philistines°.’” 12 So Achish° believed° David°, saying°, “He has surely° made° himself odious° among his people° Israel°; therefore he will become° my servant° forever°.”

Saul, hearing David to be in Gath, seeketh no more for him.

1 ¶ And Davidº saidºª in² his heart,º I shall now² perishºª oneº dayº by the handº of Saul:º [there is] nothing² betterº for me than² that¹ I should speedily¹ª escapeºª into² the landº of the Philistines;º and Saulº shall despairºª of² me, to seekºª me any more² in any² coastº of Israel:º so shall I escapeºª out of his hand.º² 2 And Davidº arose,ºª and he² passed overºª with the sixº hundredº menº that² [were] with² him unto² Achish,º the sonº of Maoch,º kingº of Gath.º 3 And Davidº dweltºª with² Achishº at Gath,º he² and his men,¹² every manº with his household,º [even] Davidº with his twoº wives,º Ahinoamº the Jezreelitess,º and Abigailº the Carmelitess,¹² Nabal'sº wife.º 4 And it was toldºª Saulº that² Davidº was fledºª to Gath:º and he soughtºª no² more² againºªªª for him.

David beggeth Ziklag of Achish.

5 ¶ And Davidº saidºª unto² Achish,º If² I have now² foundºª graceº in thine eyes,º let them giveºª me a placeº in someº townº in the country,º that I may dwellºª there:² for why² should thy servantº dwellºª in the royalº cityº with² thee? 6 Then Achishº gaveºª him² Ziklagº that² day:º wherefore² Ziklagº pertaineth² unto the kingsº of Judahº unto² this² day.º 7 And the timeº¹ that² Davidº dweltºª in the countryº of the Philistinesº was² a full² yearº and fourº months.º

8 ¶ And Davidº and his men¹² went up,ºª and invadedºª² the Geshurites,º and the Gezrites,º and the Amalekites:º for² thoseº [nations were] of oldº²² the inhabitantsºª of the land,º as thou goestºª to Shur,º even unto² the landº of Egypt.º 9 And Davidº smoteºª² the land,º and left² neither² manº nor womanº alive,¹ª and took awayºª the sheep,º and the oxen,º and the asses,º and the camels,º and the apparel,º and returned,ºª and cameºª to² Achish.º 10 And Achishº said,ºª Whitherº have ye made a roadºª to day?º And Davidº said,ºª Against² the southº of Judah,º and against² the southº of the Jerahmeelites,º and against² the southº of the Kenites.º 11 And Davidº savedºª neither² manº nor womanº alive,¹ª to bringºª [tidings] to Gath,º saying,ºª Lest² they should tellºª on² us, saying,ºª So² didºª David,º and so² [will be] his mannerº all² the whileº he dwellethºª in the countryº of the Philistines.º 12 And Achishº believedºª David,º saying,ºª He hath made his peopleº Israelº utterly¹ª to abhorºª him; therefore he shall be² my servantº for ever.º
