Joash (Jehoash) Reigns over Judah

1 In the seventh° year° of Jehu°, aJehoash° became° king°, and he reigned° forty° years° in Jerusalem°; and his mother’s° name° was Zibiah° of Beersheba°. 2 Jehoash° did° right° in the sight° of the LORD° all° his days° in which° Jehoiada° the priest° instructed° him. 3 Only° athe high° places° were not taken° away°; the people° still° sacrificed° and burned° incense° on the high° places°.

The Temple to Be Repaired

4 ¶ Then Jehoash° said° to the priests°, “All° the money° of the sacred° things° awhich° is brought° into the house° of the LORD°, in current° money°, [both] bthe money° of each° man’s° assessment° [and] all° the money° Iwhich° any° man’s° heart° prompts°° him to bring° into the house° of the LORD°, 5 let the priests° take° it for themselves, each° from his acquaintance°; and they shall repair° the Idamages° of the house° wherever°°° any damage° may be found°.”

6 ¶ But it came° about that in the twenty-third°° year° of King° Jehoash° athe priests° had not repaired° the damages° of the house°. 7 Then King° Jehoash° called° for Jehoiada° the priest°, and for the [other] priests° and said° to them, “Why° do you not repair° the damages° of the house°? Now° therefore take° no° [more] money° from your acquaintances°, but pay° it for the damages° of the house°.” 8 So the priests° agreed° that they would take° no° [more] money° from the people°, nor° repair° the damages° of the house°.

9 ¶ But aJehoiada° the priest° took° a chest° and bored° a hole° in its lid° and put° it beside° the altar°, on the right° side° as one° comes° into the house° of the LORD°; and the priests° who guarded° the threshold° put° in it all° the money° which was brought° into the house° of the LORD°. 10 When they saw° that there was much° money° in the chest°, athe king’s° scribe° and the high° priest° came° up and tied° [it] in bags and counted° the money° which was found° in the house° of the LORD°. 11 They gave° the money° which was weighed° out into the hands° of those who did° the work°, who had the oversight° of the house° of the LORD°; and they Ipaid° it out to the carpenters°° and the builders° who worked° on the house° of the LORD°; 12 and ato the masons° and the stonecutters°°, and for buying° timber° and hewn° stone° to repair° the damages° to the house° of the LORD°, and for all° that was Ilaid° out for the house° to repair° it. 13 But athere were not made° for the house° of the LORD° bsilver° cups°, snuffers°, bowls°, trumpets°, any° vessels° of gold°, or vessels° of silver° from the money° which was brought° into the house° of the LORD°; 14 for they gave° that to those who did° the work°, and with it they repaired° the house° of the LORD°. 15 Moreover, athey did not require° an accounting° from the men° into whose° hand° they gave° the money° to pay° to those who did° the work°, for they dealt° faithfully°. 16 The amoney° from the guilt° offerings° and bthe money° from the sin° offerings° was not brought° into the house° of the LORD°; cit was for the priests°.

17 ¶ Then° aHazael° king° of Aram° went° up and fought° against° Gath° and captured° it, and bHazael° set° his face° to go° up to Jerusalem°. 18 aJehoash° king° of Judah° took° all° the sacred° things° that Jehoshaphat° and Jehoram° and Ahaziah°, his fathers°, kings° of Judah°, had dedicated°, and bhis own sacred° things° and all° the gold° that was found° among the treasuries° of the house° of the LORD° and of the king’s° house°, and sent° [them] to Hazael° king° of Aram°. Then he went° away° from Jerusalem°.

19 ¶ Now the rest° of the acts° of Joash° and all° that he did°, are they not written° in the Book° of the Chronicles°° of the Kings° of Judah°? 20 aHis servants° arose° and made° a conspiracy° and bstruck° down° Joash° at cthe house° of Millo° [as he was] going° down° to Silla°. 21 For Jozacar° the son° of Shimeath° and Jehozabad° the son° of aShomer°, his servants°, struck° [him] and he died°; and they buried° him with his fathers° in the city° of David°, and bAmaziah° his son° became° king° in his place°.

Jehoash reigneth well all the days of Jehoiada.

He giveth order for the repair of the Temple.

4 ¶ And Jehoashº saidºª to² the priests,º All² the moneyº of the dedicated thingsº that² is broughtºª into the houseº of the LORD,º [even] the moneyº of every one¹ that passethºª [the account], the moneyº that every manº is set at,º [and] all² the moneyº that² comethºª into² any man'sº heartº to bringºª into the houseº of the LORD,º 5 Let the priestsº takeºª [it] to them, every manº of²² his acquaintance:º and let them² repairºª² the breachesº of the house,º wheresoever²²² any breachº shall be found.ºª 6 But it was² [so, that] in the threeº¹ and twentiethº yearº of kingº Jehoashº the priestsº had not² repairedºª² the breachesº of the house.º 7 Then kingº Jehoashº calledºª for Jehoiadaº the priest,º and the [other] priests,º and saidºª unto² them, Why² repairºª ye not²² the breachesº of the house?º now² therefore receiveºª no² [more] moneyº of²² your acquaintance,º but² deliverºª it for the breachesº of the house.º 8 And the priestsº consentedºª to receiveºª noº [more] moneyº of²² the people,º neitherº to repairºª² the breachesº of the house.º 9 But Jehoiadaº the priestº tookºª aº chest,º and boredºª a holeº in the lidº of it, and setºª it besideº the altar,º on the right sideº as oneº comethºª into the houseº of the LORD:º and the priestsº that keptºª the doorº putºª therein²² all² the moneyº [that was] broughtºª into the houseº of the LORD.º 10 And it was² [so], when they sawºª that² [there was] muchº moneyº in the chest,º that the king'sº scribeºª and the highº priestº came up,ºª and they put up in bags,ºª and toldºª² the moneyº that was foundºª in the houseº of the LORD.º 11 And they gaveºª² the money,º being told,ºª into² the handsº of them that didºª the work,º that had the oversightºªªª of the houseº of the LORD:º and they laid it outºª to the carpentersºº and builders,ºª that wroughtºª upon the houseº of the LORD,º 12 And to masons,ºª and hewersºª of stone,º and to buyºª timberº and hewedº stoneº to repairºª² the breachesº of the houseº of the LORD,º and for all² that² was laid outºª for² the houseº to repairº [it]. 13 Howbeit² there were not² madeºª for the houseº of the LORDº bowlsº of silver,º snuffers,º basons,º trumpets,º any² vesselsº of gold,º or vesselsº of silver,º of² the moneyº [that was] broughtºª into the houseº of the LORD:º 14 But² they gaveºª that to the workmen,ººª and repairedºª therewith² the houseº of the LORD.º 15 Moreover they reckonedºª not² with² the men,¹² into² whose² handº they deliveredºª² the moneyº to be bestowedºª on workmen:º² for² they² dealtºª faithfully.º 16 The trespassº moneyº and sinº moneyº was not² broughtºª into the houseº of the LORD:º it was² the priests'.º

Hazael is diverted from Jerusalem by a present of the hallowed treasures.

17 ¶ Then² Hazaelº kingº of Syriaº went up,ºª and foughtºª against² Gath,º and tookºª it: and Hazaelº setºª his faceº to go upºª to² Jerusalem.º 18 And Jehoashº kingº of Judahº tookºª² all² the hallowed thingsº that² Jehoshaphat,º and Jehoram,º and Ahaziah,º his fathers,º kingsº of Judah,º had dedicated,ºª and his own hallowed things,º and all² the goldº [that was] foundºª in the treasuresº of the houseº of the LORD,º and in the king'sº house,º and sentºª [it] to Hazaelº kingº of Syria:º and he went awayºª from²² Jerusalem.º

Jehoash being slain by his servants, Amaziah succeedeth him.
